General Software Discussion / Help needed to alter partitions
« Last post by Curt on December 02, 2008, 06:51 AM »
Yesterday I had to use Vista Recovery, but all seemed to go well; all the documents were still there. However, today I was informed by Vista that I didn't have enough free space for the Move_(from backup drive) _To_ (Vista>C>CURT>Music) operation I was trying to perform. I got confused  because there should be about 850 GB free! So now I have to understand at least a little part of this "Partition" issue.

The recovery changed my C drive from a 500 GB into 3 partitions, 9 GB ("Free"), 157 GB ("C"), and 310 GB ("Free"), and I have no idea what-so-ever how to change it back into one 500 GB drive. In fact, the two 500 GB drives preferably should be read by Vista as one big 1 TB drive!

I tried my way around inside Vista, but have so far found nothing that would offer me to change these partitions. I do have Partition Table Doctor 3.5 [PTDD], (on the backup drive), but when I tried "Rebuild", it had nothing to offer, and I in return have no clue how to operate it. But maybe 'YOU' have? Help sure is needed, please! What should I do?

Or should I welcome this change, and start saving my files onto various partitions??

oops! Sometimes it really is hard not to be misunderstood  :D

As I recall it, I usually never had more than 80 processes running at the same time.

- sounds cool, too, Darwin :-)  even more when I understood you also are driving Mac with the same keyboard & mouse! It has been 15 years since the last time I tried to even touch anything from Apple! ;-)  I cannot remember hotkeys so I don't bother to try again - I demand my context menu!   :D  Other than that, I was impressed with the speed, 15 yrs ago; how is OS X comparing to Vista, regarding boot time and loading-of-apps time?

---

I also had a dream about keeping this new Vista free of all the indifferent programs I have introduced to both Win2k and XP. Both were heavily under-powered, 320 MB RAM for Win2k, and 448 MB RAM for XP's 700+ programs, so it was easy to think "next time, less programs", but Vista seems to have so much more power coming from this "super-fetch" and the 4GB RAM, so someday I may have a lot of programs installed on this one as well!

Well, I have taken my new Vista into use, and so far it is even worse than I feared :-(

- three (3) days it lasted, that new Vista of mine!

(.....), and told the machine to reboot. This was the last I saw of Vista.

Typing this on my "old" XP, ...

Frankly, Vista is far far better than XP, at least when it comes to Recovery!  :)  It was a little hard to find, but that may be due to the oddness of the Siemens/Toshiba Recovery which I refused to use, but when first I clicked Recover To Previous Setup, or what it may be called in English, there was no problem at all. All the programs are there, except for the sinner, and all of my documents are safe~saved.  :D

I bet it would be easy for skrommel to extend ShortcutTip, to make it include the wanted features.

Beerwin 6.0 is now on the market. Still freeware.

Beerwin finally also has two web templates worth looking at, Deep Blue 2 and Simplicity 2, the older templates were never of any interest to me.

http://www.beerwin.com/

Beerwin`s PlainHTML   - HTML and code editor

Beerwin`s PlainHTML is a HTML and code editor that supports syntax highlighting, code templates, browser preview, CGI/PHP/HTML reference, table layout designer, shortcuts to common HTML tags and more. The program also include several additional tools for picking colors, creating navigation bars, keeping notes, stripping tags and other functions. Other features include customizable toolbars and links to external tools, HTML validation, integrated update checker and more.

- thanks for the empathy, Darwin :-)  Once again I received a PC without a CD, and again it just might take forever to get my hands upon one - I still have my Win 2000 standing in the corner, laughing at me because I never managed to get an installation CD to repair it. The same goes for the XP, but at least it is still running. I really must learn to accept the extra cost and get it all right from the beginning, the next time I am about to purchase a computer.

Have you ever used your discount, though, Curt? It's far cheaper to wait for them to offer you a deal (like the Core Tuner one that I mentioned) as you can't actually use your Yiggles on already discounted applications and the discounts are usually greater than 60% (let alone the 40% to which you and I are entitled)[/off-topic]

- they calculated that just right, as well. No, you made the point, Mike, I have never used a single Yiggle. Maybe we should start speaking about it as it really is: Yiggles are worthless candy for the mind, and their (upgrade) prices are annual fees! But, hey, we hate such politics, so why the heck do we keep on buying this stuff??!! Oh, it really doesn't make any difference, does it, it is only a tenner here and a tenner there. I think I will head over at www2.ashampoo and buy myself this Core Tuner while we are at it.
5166
- thanks for testing, Darwin. I clearly must have some programs clashing one way or another.

And regarding the showing off: It only lasted three days, didn't it

Ashampoo keeps trying to sell me "Ashampoo Core Tuner" for $9.95. From what little I can glean from the internet, this type of application is snakeoil, no?

- maybe and maybe not, I don't know. But beside all the auto- features, my interest got caught by these words:

You can set the “priority” in five levels to adjust the amount of processor power each program gets. You can also specify how many processor cores each program gets to use.

If these features can be combined, you would from my imagination be able to tell Windows Update not to use more than a fraction of a core, even if there are four cores. Or maybe I am getting this all wrong?

---

Core Tuner also comes with a Process Killer, a Services Manager, and a Startup Manager.
Normal price is $20

---

Edited:
I feel it appropriate to remind any readers that Ashampoo programs not are cheap! They are on the contrary a little expensive! When a normal program would go from version 2.0 to 2.1, any Ashampoo program becomes version 3, and you will have to purchase it again. I very recently upgraded my Ashampoo WinOptimizer from version 4 to 5, when version 5 was brand new, and already they are offering me to pre-order version 6!!!

I should know if they are expensive or not. I have 4.985 Yiggles  :-[

I'd given up on PSTray Factory and Vista (version 2.5 installs fine but does nothing)

- odd!! I installed 2.5 on Vista (only heard of the 2.63 today), and it worked as it did on XP; fine!
5169
I have used the one and same license key on three computers. No contact with the company was necessary.

But I still think PS Tray Factory is a little "hard" on the computer. Everytime I have clicked anything inside the popup and is "closing" the popup again, the CPU will speed up its use. It have done so on both Win 2000 and XP, and to a minor degree even on my new quad core Vista. Maybe I have another (a third) program that is causing a conflict?

General Software Discussion / Re: Direct Access 2.0 - Getting Too Pricey for Me!
« Last post by Curt on November 27, 2008, 04:14 PM »
If you buy an upgrade to Direct Access 2.0 by the 5th December 2008, we are happy to extend your upgrade subscription to the 31st December 2009 (instead of the standard 12 months). With upgrade protection you will get Direct Access 2.0 and all the future versions released in a year. And of course, Direct Access is yours to keep: you will be able to continue using the version you got during your subscription period after it has expired.
-Anrea Nagar

This time he avoided the can/cannot babbling

- and offers an extra four weeks of license. Wow, I am impressed (or am I?)!

Direct Access 2.0 BETA (v.1.9.9.6) contains a number of fixes (thanks everybody for reporting them in the forum) and a new major feature: the ability to define separator characters (like punctuation marks, space, tabs) that define the end of an abbreviation. This will make the autocorrect work similarly to how it works in Microsoft Word. You type a misspelled word and it's automatically corrected after you press space or any separator character you define. This works when you define your abbreviation to work with no confirmation.

To see some screenshots, point your browser to http://www.nagarsoft...om/directaccess/beta

You can download the latest beta connecting to http://www.nagarsoft...ccess/beta-download/

You can find a list of changes in the beta forum at http://www.nagarsoft.com/forum (you need to register to read and post comments).

DIRECT ACCESS 2.0 WILL BE RELEASED ON THE 8th DECEMBER 2008

Well, I have taken my new Vista into use, and so far it is even worse than I feared :-(

- three (3) days it lasted, that new Vista of mine! Yesterday I simply had to test the offer from Bits du Jour, RollBack Rx Professional:

RollBack Rx Professional
A Virtual Time-Machine!
RollBack Rx's system restore is a complete hard drive system restore utility, incremental backup system, and disaster recovery solution. No data loss, guaranteed!

The price was announced to $28, but turned out to be €28, plus €5 per year, for maintenance. I got annoyed and removed the program again, and told the machine to reboot. This was the last I saw of Vista. I wonder what the terms are for this "No data loss, guaranteed"?!! Their praise said "disaster recovery solution" - but somehow they forgot the "recovery" part, leaving me with a solution of disaster!!

But i would prefer an automation to launch those  URLs at FF start automatically.

Another quote:

By default, Firefox allows the setting of multiple homepages separated by the pipe or vertical bar character "|" (Note: it appears as a broken bar "¦" on many keyboards).

Now this works fine for opening multiple tabs every time the browser is started or the home button is clicked; however, it can slow down the browser startup.
