Living Room / Re: What are good sunglasses (brands)?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 20, 2011, 08:37 PM »
What about if you already have/wear prescription glasses? Is the advice all the same? Or does that change things at all?

I currently have prescription glasses with transition lenses. I like them, but since these are my first pair of glasses ever I didn't really know what I was doing and I got glasses with the frame and lenses too small. And since I'm wearing them all the time they give me a headache (so I end up not wearing them all the time if I can help it).

I think I'd prefer as light weight as possible, ultra padded/soft on the nose and ears. And really big lenses that cover as much of my field of vision as possible so I can see wherever I look without having to point my face directly at what I'm looking at to get it within the lense frame.

Living Room / Re: Can someone help me find this research paper/publication?

Thanks app.

I sent an inquiry to that e-mail address last night and I've already received a reply! I, too, noticed the discrepancy between what was listed on the original website I was reading and the official paper's title. And now I know why that discrepancy exists. It is because the file Steven Summerfelt sent has a filename of "Summerfelt et al. 1993. continuous culture & selective harvest. Techniques for Modern Aquaculture, p 581-595.PDF" I suppose the official title of the paper is kind of long to use as a filename. So now it all makes sense.

Steven was also kind/proactive enough to send me another, more recent (2009), somewhat related article entitled "Advances in fish harvest technologies for circular tanks."

So I got an e-mail from a forum I signed up for but never visit, since it's based in Germany and I don't speak German.

Thankfully Gmail translated it well enough for me to find the unsubscribe link. The link took me to a page that gave me two options:

Schicken Sie mir künftig keine werblichen Angebote von GameStar per E-Mail.

Ich möchte auch künftig über interessante Angebote aus Ihrem Haus per E-Mail informiert werden.

As I said, I don't speak German, so I was reliant on Google Translate to tell me which one to pick. This is what Google Translate told me:

Unsubscribe.png

 :o :tellme:

Thankfully JoTo was available in IRC to tell me that the top option actually said send me no future e-mails.

I'm currently researching Aquaponicsw (the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics) and a website has cited a source that I just can't find. FYI I'm doing this purely to satisfy my own interests/curiosity, so it's not like I'm in the field or doing it for an assignment.

This is the info I have:

a paper by Dr. Steven Summerfelt (of the well-known Freshwater Institute on the East Coast), titled "Summerfelt et al. 1993. continuous culture & selective harvest. Techniques for Modern Aquaculture, p 581-595.PDF" This is a paper on CMSGH (Continuous Mixed Stocking, Graded Harvesting), which explains how you can raise double the amount of fish (or more) in a single tank with a special easy-to-use stocking and harvesting method."

With that info I was able to find a reference to it near the bottom of page 41 from the Freshwater Institute's publication list here (PDF):

Summerfelt, S. T., Hankins, J. A., Summerfelt, S. R., & Heinen, J. M. (1993). Modeling continuous culture with periodic stocking and selective harvesting to measure the effect on productivity and biomass capacity of fish culture systems. Paper presented at the Techniques for Modern Aquaculture, St. Joseph, MI

My problem is that I don't know how to find the actual paper itself and read it. Do any of you more scholarly types have resources or suggestions or ideas on how to get this paper?

Am I interpreting these numbers correctly?

US Families: 82 million
Food stamp recipients: 45 million

Over 1/2 of the families in the USA are on Food Stamps?

If I understand it correctly, the XP-Mode is basically a free copy of Windows XP installed in Microsoft Virtual PC.

So if you already have an XP license, you might as well install it in your VM software of choice.

Just get a download manager that allows you to use labels or something similar (with destination directory tied to each label). Sometimes they will even have a dropdown box with recently selected locations.

BTW - What is it with Hindi pop that makes it so damn catchy?  :tellme:

Personally I found both of them extremely annoying and didn't finish watching/listening to either of them.

Someday I think I will own something like this:

Product Image.jpg

It's an Android tablet with a dockable keyboard with touchpad. The dock adds more battery life and some USB ports, etc. So it's basically an Android and a netbook combined. Click the image above for more details.

I assume they'll slow down with the new numbers when they get to number 10 (or whatever Chrome is at). Then they'll update as often as Chrome does after that. (They aren't chasing anyone else are they?)

Chrome is at v. 12 now.

But the reason why Chrome's version number doesn't matter is because they don't make big announcements for every update. Chrome just silently updates itself and you have the latest version and if there's a big new feature Chrome will let you know or Google will post a blog about it.

Google doesn't hype the version numbers. They hype new features.

Firefox (and others) hype new version numbers and then list the features.

It does sound neat, and potentially scary. Perhaps I just didn't understand it, but it seems like it wasn't explained very well what it actually does.

General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 12, 2011, 08:04 PM »
Lately I'm noticing the displayed time being sooner later than what seems correct -- and it seems to get worse over time.

Installed ClockSync (root required) and am hoping for an improvement.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

On Sunday the power went out here and I reset the clock in the kitchen according to my Android's clock. I found out later that day that my Android clock was about 20 minutes behind actual time and I was late for something. This thread reminded me to fix my clock on my Android, but I just checked and it is accurate now.

I no longer subscribe to cellular/data service on my Android, I also hadn't had it connected to the wifi for a while and it got behind. But for about the past 24 hours it's been connected to WiFi and now the clock is right, so I think perhaps it automatically syncs itself with some sort of "atomic clock" if it has data/WiFi access.

Other than this instance on Sunday, I've never noticed my Android clock being wrong, except perhaps when I was travelling by airplane (phone was off) across timezones.

Imagine the medical applications once this technology gets more sophisticated: almost perfect facsimiles for knee replacements, etc.

Brilliant thinking Mr.K. !!!

Any bone! Wow. Talk about a boon for reconstructive and orthopedic surgery if they can come up with a highly stable biocompatible modeling resin. Virtually exact replacement parts! The mind boggles at the possibilities and opportunities.

My mom recently had a life-altering, multiple bone injury and is currently recovering from surgery. Perhaps she could have used something like this. But, erm, I guess they'd need to somehow scan the bones before the injury to make good copies. But I guess in the meantime pins, rods, and cadaver bone tissues will have to do.

Can I ask why people are hesitant to reveal who they are?

I can think of a couple. Not that I, myself, am currently worried about these examples:

All it takes is one crazy ex-girlfriend (or something similar) and you probably won't want them to be able to see the latest details of your life publicly displayed online.

People have also been known to have been fired for posting things online that had nothing to do with their employment, but that the employer thought might reflect poorly on the company.

« Last post by Deozaan on July 10, 2011, 12:13 PM »
Hmm, I don't know if this is a feature or a bug or just an oversight, but there's a minor issue with Last.fm scrobbling.

It seems as though it doesn't scrobble the most recently played track until it changes to a new track. This means that if you have a song on repeat for 50 days it will only scrobble it the one time when you finally change tracks. And nobody (including yourself) will know how much you love/played that song.

EDIT: It seems as though this is standard scrobbling feature. I've been playing the same song on repeat in Subsonic and it only scrobbles the first play (but it doesn't show up in the list until after I've stopped the song or switch to another).
