Something ugly about the Waterfox variant of version 15. By default it wanted to install an antivirus program (AVG) including a toolbar that it said only works in 32-bit browsers (Waterfox is 64-bit), I hate bundleware, and not expecting to see it in something downloaded from Sourceforge. All versions of Firefox freeze like crazy these days to me, I hope this is better.

I can understand them bundling AVG. They need to pay the bills. The programmers need to get paid. I like opt in rather than opt out, but I'm not super-uber-ultra-against opt-out. I do not use opt-out in the 1 program where I use installer ads.

I'm not too sure about Adblock Plus (if there are copies with the same name), but there are a billion "Adblock" plugins, and some are better than others. Some do a good job of filtering out, but hog so much CPU as to make surfing either painful or impossible. I have ABP in Chrome, and it works nicely. Had others, nightmare. I'll sacrifice a little CPU (I have a beast of a machine, so I have TONNES of CPU power), but I won't tolerate some plugin that thinks it's the only thing on my machine.

^ Both those links looked pretty fun~!

But then again, I loved "Watch Alice Bleed" as well. ;)

The link I tried was here:

http://articles.merc...tes-food-system.aspx

I tried again just now, and it seemed sane. Only 1 tab though.

I'll give it a shot again tomorrow though. For now, back to farting around with some WPF stuff. :)

Blast from the past:

LinuxDevices.com - LG demonstrates wireless Linux Web pad at CeBIT
By Rick Lehrbaum 2001-03-23

The iPad is powered by a 206Mhz Intel SA-1110 system-on-chip processor and an in-built 64 SDRAM module. It offers some expandability with a slot for Flash memory cards and PCMCIA cards. To operate the devices, users are given a stylus and the pad provides handwriting recognition for both English and Korean.

How dare you, Apple! :P

BWAHAHAHAHA~!

That is way too awesome! Thanks for posting it~! ;D

Bah. F FF. Or F Fx. Whatever. Sick of it. Damn thing froze on me while trying to scroll down the page. The mouse was already sluggish inside of it. I can't be bothered to fart around with it anymore.

Oh my...

FINALLY got around to watching this...

About the patents...

We didn't look at any singular aspect that closely...

Huh? Wasn't a part of this about patent validity? How can you not look at the patents closely?

Sounds like they just wanted to get the hell out of there. (Not that I blame them though - I don't think I'd like to do jury duty.)

IMHO the only piece of hardware Microsoft ever really did get right was the scroll-wheel mouse.

And the only pieces of software they ever got mostly right were Flight Simulator X...and maybe (just maybe) Word 6.0. 8)

I had an MS ball mouse for about 8 years of hard work. It just wouldn't die. When I went to replace it, I found that you could no longer buy wheel mice. Everything was laser. :( At the time, laser mice weren't really all that spectacular/accurate, and I was rather disappointed. Maybe I've had good luck with MS hardware. Dunno. I'd buy MS hardware again though.

The WTFPL is a rephrased BSD license, basically. I wonder why people always forget that one.

But it's still a heck of a lot more fun than any other license out there~! ;D

If it's not GPL, MIT or Mozilla or Apache, it's going to be something fishy.

There are other good licenses as well. I think my favourite is the WTFPL. ;D

The point about linux or open source is not to replace the mainstream brands but to offer people the same experience without them having to cut leg and arm for it.

Something most people (including some notables in the Linux community) miss: Linux is not about "winning" or "dominating." It's about providing the user a better alternative than just saying: "none of the above."

Reminds me of Yoda - "No. There is another..." :D

If anyone has kept up with current trends in development, you know that the "open web" is a complete joke.

Companies are carving out terrortory (no typo) to move applications to HTML/CSS/JavaScript and into walled gardens. They are offering SDKs and APIs that lock developers into their own ecosystem (financial servitude). HTML5 is not going to make the web free - it is going to be used as a tool to lock in developers and users.

For the most obvious examples, look at mobile development. A large number of applications are nothing more than web pages. This is particularly evident in games.

Meh... Lemmings. Cliff. Sick producers. The conclusion is pretty obvious.

+1

Good post.

MS has burned people too many times. The stranded people with music that they'll never be able to use because of DRM, etc. etc.

Again, this is why DRM is so bad and why free AND open systems are good. (Not all open systems are free.)

But the companies are not satisfied to make a product and sell it -- they want you to be hooked on *their* digital heroin. They have to have you as their fix. Anytime you hear "ecosystem" - think "lock in".

A funny take on a story about an ape with higher than average intelligence:

http://www.naturalne...ee_intelligence.html

A twenties-something "genius ape" named Natasha has been found to demonstrate more intelligence than a typical U.S. high school student. The findings have been published in the peer-reviewed science journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

...

According to these scientists, Natasha has demonstrated the following skills; all of which escape the dumbed-down mental capacity of a typical U.S. high school student:

• An ability to repeatedly escape the chimpanzee enclosure using planning skills.

• An ability to disable an electric fence by throwing branches on it and observing the sparks. Once the sparks stopped, Natasha knew the fence was disabled and then proceeded to climb it. (A typical U.S. high school student cannot figure out how to pull his pants up around his waist.)

• The ability to wield a special tool to avoid a trap while locating hidden food. (U.S. high school students eat toxic food chemicals every day which trap them in a lifetime of chronic disease.)

etc. etc.

The original story is here:

The whole walled garden thing is just painful.

More like it's predictable. :-\

Heed the words of the Sage: "Never sign onto anybody's trip but your own."

Which sage is that? Timothy Leary? ;D

I kind of wonder what the rejection levels are for Google Play...

I know that Samsung Apps will have a relatively high rejection rate, and they're pretty clear about it up front. But Samsung Apps isn't THE exclusive way to get software onto your device. BTW - They're giving away $4 million in prize money for their next app challenge.

Living Room / iOS Developer Mulling Android Over App Rejection
« Last post by Renegade on August 30, 2012, 09:43 PM »
Just saw an article in Wired about a guy who's app has been rejected several times, and he's now mulling over doing it for Android.

http://www.wired.com...m/2012/08/drone-app/

Begley is about at his wits end over the iOS version of Drones+. “I’m kind of back at the drawing board about what exactly I’m supposed to do,” Begley said. The basic idea was to see if he could get App Store denizens a bit more interested in the U.S.’ secretive, robotic wars, with information on those wars popping up on their phones the same way an Instagram comment or retweet might. Instead, Begley’s thinking about whether he’d have a better shot making the same point in the Android Market.

The whole walled garden thing is just painful.

Renegade I just saw somewhere that 51% of Americans think rain affects data in the "Cloud" (?!)

Well, Samsung and LG are the ones I know best. But I think Samsung has eclipsed LG there. However, Samsung uses some third party manufacturers to do a lot of that as well. One of them I have an intense hatred for, and would not recommend.

Sorry - too much to drink... need to melt my mind with a video or something.
