You know, even if she stays on XP, on the hardware she is currently using or a VM, there is going to be a learning curve involved.

Nicely put App!  And great points!

Can we close the thread?  Maybe that would end the signups just to get HUC.

^ This. +1.

In a VM... but realize that you might have to nuke it.  And don't have it connected to anything else- just straight to the internet.  Or not connected at all.  But just running it?  I'd never recommend that course of action.

Well, a lot of that is Borland's fault.  When I first got into C#, it was on a Delphi contract.  Basically it was for a retirement system for a large consulting company.  And they were supposed to do another one also.  Multi-million dollar contract.  And Borland wasn't involved at all.

Microsoft stole the shop out from underneath them.  Gave free software.  Gave free training.  Gave hours of consultation.  It was an investment from the business side.  That resulted in a lot of business, and a lot of converts to C#.

Completely Borland's fault.

Well, everyone can disagree.  As far as succeeding in business, many of those things are what I've already followed, and have been the reason for much success.

Having worked for GE, I'm also glad somebody finally called bullshit on the "Forced Ranking" process mentioned in that first article. Rob Enderle got it spot on the sugar. It was yet another blunt-instrument "Neutron Jack" solution to a unique problem at GE. Unfortunately, it was adopted - and then became institutionalized - in far too many other places. With predictable results.

The place I'm currently working has it.  I was the victim of it in two review cycles.  Then I let my manager know that if I was ranked not according to my work, and I knew it one more time, I'd be gone.  It hasn't happened since.

I just realized... I purchased too many licenses LOL :)  Didn't realize each was useful on 3 pcs.  Eh, its worth it, and I might give the other away after I get things installed/registered to see how many I actually need.

My favorite parts -
(1) he's nice.
(2) he requested advice from Bill in order to succeed.

I think the telling part is actually the second part, though I just like that someone can get to that lofty level, and still retain basic respect for others.  Ballmer always seemed to try to distance himself from Gates.  I always thought that was a losing proposition.  Nadella seems to realize this.

definitely.  I'd been hesitating over purchasing because of the fact that it's something that I rarely use.  But this gave me impetus to do so.

I wasn't saying that towards anyone that uses Pascal.  I was just giving my personal experience.  People code in all sorts of things,a nd if they can get what they need done, what else matters?

I've done it.  And quickly switched back.  I can get past a lack of vertical space... but horizontal space is what I crave.  Also, looking up and down is more annoying than looking right to left IMO.

I don't think they're usually bait and switch...

... hmm, but an argument could be made either way.  If you're blocked and basically have to spend/waste time or wait for time to pass, is that a time sink or a bait and switch?

I know in certain games, there are what is termed 'time sinks' that basically make the game seem longer because of useless waits that are inserted.  Like in MMOs when you're crafting something and you watch an animation while a progress bar fills up... that's a time sink.  You could just as easily click the button and be done... but they want you to wait.  It's a useless pacing mechanism meant to slow people down.  So you can progress- but unless you pay, your progression is retarded.  And in the case of tiny death star, it was retarded beyond all belief.  To make the increasing amount of money to add a new level, I had to wait *days*.

10 ways Facebook changed gaming for ever

I think the fact that a lot of these ideas came from facebook flash games is what makes them as ass backwards as they are.

RL Stalking/Bullying/something that just ignoring and not engaging wouldn't solve.

As far as sock-puppeting, how do you prove it?

I had/have PM's from my presumed-perp but *the top of the ladder* refused to access them.  Even with my permission to do so.

Re-telling what was said doesn't work because none of the questionable posts were included in the original PM's.  :-\

Even a PM isn't conclusive, and just from my perspective from different altercations that I've had here and elsewhere, IMO private messages should stay just that... private.  Unless it is very above the shade abusive, the PM system is in place for a reason, and to violate that without *both* parties' consent goes outside the lines of what is reasonable.

If anyone wants to join me in jumping to 27", this is the one i'm looking at -- newegg is currently having a bit of a sale on it:

LG 27EA83R-D

http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16824005494

Too rich for my blood.  I've looked at 27s and 30s, but haven't pulled the trigger.  They've been a lot less though... there are some really good deals on IPS monitors on ebay from S. Korea with Samsung screens.  I have a couple of friends that have gone that way... and the results are awesome.

But right now, at work, I have 2x21+24+17 (laptop screen).

At home, I have 2x24 + 20.  I had 3x24 at one point, but desktop space became a premium, and I didn't want to bother with complicated mounts to go vertical.

And as I've downsized, I realized that I didn't really *need* all of that space.  As long as my primary is large enough, the rest is just gravy.  What's been more important is the quality of the screen, i.e. LCD < LED Backlit < IPS.  The IPS is what makes the larger difference.

I just checked on eBay, and there's an LG on there from Newegg for less:

http://www.ebay.com/...-Panel-/291069085391

same price on newegg:

http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16824005419

The brightness is a little less... but not sure if that's worth the price difference.

DC's Jerk Filter is very effective and quick when it's a spammer.

Actually, that's because the members police a lot.  I'm on here a lot, and I report what I can't do anything about.  But I'm nowhere near a mod in general- and feel that my contributions in that case matter.  And there's a set and very cut and dried procedure in place.  As far as sock-puppeting, how do you prove it?

As a developer who makes money off of software, and a gamer who plays games, I still have very little sympathy.  I understand the points that they are making, but I just don't agree.

I 'bought' a free to play game, finally.  Tiny Death Star.  I paid for one 'dose' figuring that $4.99 was a reasonable price to get somewhere in the game, as the game was enjoyable, and definitely could have been priced as such.  But I quickly realized- they don't just want to give you a trial and then you pay something and get to play the game.  They want to wring you dry.  4.99 made me the proud recipient of an elevator that went twice as fast, and enough money to add one level.

That's not what I think of when I think of an equitable exchange for the money.  I've uninstalled it.

The games are pretty, and shiny, and have mechanisms within to make it fun to play.  But the relationship isn't equitable.

I did Pascal/Delphi for a long time... made a lot of money with it.  Now I use C#, and when I tried to go back just to look at some old code... I didn't find myself wanting to jump back into it.
