Welcome to the site, Michael -- seems like you did lots of work on this.  Although this is not something i personally have use for, it's always nice to see someone who is obviously interested in making something useful.
I wish you had found us before the NANY event ended.  I think we need to do a better job of spreading the word next year. And speaking of which, I do hope you are around next year to share something else with us!

The DirectX capture plugin does not work and is no longer supported.

Is it possible you have the delay option enabled?

I don't know why you would need to click taskbar icon twice, but:

Screenshot Captor is a tool that is meant to be left running in the background (minimized to system tray) for very fast captures at any time, and is not really meant to be started and stopped only when you need to perform a quick capture (which I assume is what you are doing -- tell me if i'm wrong).

If you *do* want a tool that should just be run only when you need to perform a capture, try the little brother of Screenshot Captor, the commandline tool MiniCap: https://www.donation...tware/Mouser/MiniCap

just wanted to post and say how nice it is to see when a request and a coder come together so perfectly to produce something that is useful to others.

i like the new icon.
i think it should add itself automatically to the list at first run.

are you using active window capture or full screen capture? does full screen capture also have this delay?

Screenshot Captor / Re: How eliminate background when capturing active window?
« Last post by mouser on January 12, 2016, 07:55 PM »
i should probably try to make sc smartly warn about this when it detects no transparency, not just to help the user avoid this unwanted graphics, but because of the speedup in capturing.

right ok, so im assuming you are using the Active Window Capture mode, and its giving you those extra margins that include stuff you don't want.

what you are seeing there is the effect of a CHILD window on top of a parent, combined with SC trying to capture background transparency around the edges.

the quickest best solution is probably to tell SC to stop trying to grab the alpha transparency around window -- which will also result in a faster capture.

go to preferences, than window capturing 1 tab, then uncheck "try to capture aero glass transparency effects"

let me know if that helps.

that's what Active Window Capture mode is supposed to do, but there are situations and settings that effect it.
can you be more specific -- or better yet post a screenshot showing what result you are getting.

the delay is almost totally useless when it comes to the "selected region" capture mode.
if you want to capture a menu, using a full screen capture with delay makes some sense, and then CROP the region you want to capture after the fact.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Transparency for signature
« Last post by mouser on January 11, 2016, 05:18 PM »
Easier to do with a proper image editing tool, but you CAN do it from SC.

Go to Edit menu, then Selection Mode, then choose "Magic wand - Exclusive" or you could try "Magic wand - Global", and then click on a background area.
This should select the BACKGROUND around the signature.

Now you'll need to INVERT the selection to choose only your signature part, so go to Edit menu, Select, INVERT selection.

Then you can hit the CROP button (or choose menu Edit, Crop to selection).

That should do it.

Be prepared to undo if it doesn't :)

Windows sometimes does a very messed up thing with .chm help files you download from the internet, it silently marks them as untrusted and "blocks" the help file and refuses to display any contents in them, while not telling you what it is doing.

If this ever happens to you, right-click on the .chm help file in your file explorer, choose file properties from the menu, and you should see an "Unblock" button you can press to fix the problem.

On my system there always have been some icons that reset themselves to hidden. Needless to say, I can't recall specific culprits right now but I do recall the irritation that it causes.

i have noticed this behavior in the past too and i believe it's a bug in the OS causing it..

Can you try this beta version:

It should look differently when you first run it (i've set it in manifest to indicate that it is not dpi aware).

NOTES:
  • You should turn off any custom font settings you may have set in the app to see how it will look out of the box.
  • Additionally, you will find a new option on the "startup" tab of options, that will let you force the program to tell windows that it IS dpi aware (default in previous version) -- that should let you go back to how it was.  Changing the setting requires app restart.

Let me know!

Developer's Corner / Beating Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with assembly code
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2016, 08:22 AM »
OSNews has a really cool post today about a very unusual and technical "speed-run" (fast playthrough of a game), that involes performing some very elaborate and precise tricks that actually corrupt game data in order to patch the code (planted while playing the actually game live).

The end time of 7 minutes and 52 seconds is mind-blowing enough, but how he actually gets there is just utterly insane. Basically, he procures a very specific set of items in his inventory, and then proceeds to manipulate the items in his inventory in a extremely specific way, within very specific fractions of seconds of game-time, to use the sorting mechanism of the inventory to manipulate the assembly code in memory to make the game finish itself. All this, on the actual console itself, without tools, without additional software, without emulators, without anything.

Secondary video showing how the code is patched: http://www.twitch.tv...sockfolder/c/3810968

Nice work

I can confirm and reproduce this bug.. It's wonderful that you figured out a reliable way to trigger it, because now I can fix it

Will try to get out an update this week.

Thanks IainB, both for finding the bug and for your good natured spirit about the hunt!

Thanks, TurboJosh, will fix those.

i think that makes the most sense

Trying it now.
Just a note that the "settings" submenu explanation i find confusing. and the idea of a double-click EXITING the application is doubly confusing.
