General Software Discussion / Re: SubmitToTab - a Firefox add-on
« Last post by sri on August 28, 2007, 01:00 AM »
Yes! Love it. I'd love to see something like this brought into the IE sphere as well...
Darwin, why not just use Firefox? :P but seriously, i myself would like something such as this when i'm using other browsers such as K-Meleon & etc..

Darwin: If it's the IE7 look that's keeping you away from Firefox, check out the attached screenshot ;)

What's the purpose of submitting a form to open up as a new tab?

I see "Free Download: Fully-functional version of Gaviri PocketSearch 2.1" on their site. Has it been made freeware?

Thanks jgp. I replaced 'Ctrl' with 'Fn', but it doesn't work. How to modify the script to use 'Fn' as the hotkey?

Better yet, if it has a small dialog in which it asks us to pick the hotkey and detects when I press one or a combination of keys.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Replace mouse click with a key press
« Last post by sri on August 21, 2007, 04:03 AM »
It would be less stressful to press a key on my keyboard than clicking the mouse.

So I was wondering if there's any utility that will do the clicking for me when I point the mouse and press a key (like CTRL or Fn).

To summarize: I want it like this -> I move my mouse to a hyperlink and hit CTRL key and the link should get clicked.

I am aware of MouseTool (it clicks the mouse where ever you point) but the problem with that is accidental clicks. If only there's an option in it to enable its functionality only when a key is pressed...

I installed this and have it running but can't figure out how to use it or what it does?

'Direct Scroll' is enabled, but how do I activate it?

Similarly, how do I activate or start 'Auto Shrink' feature?

I recommend Feed Reader. Smart Feeds are what you would add in them for your purpose.

The author of the article I linked to in my original post recommends www.download-tipp.de. It's in German though.

Some download site owners did email me to say either “very funny” or “stop wasting my time”. Kudos to them for taking the time to check every submission. I recommend you put their sites high on your list next time you are looking for software:

www.filecart.com

www.freshmeat.net

www.download-tipp.de (German)

This reminds me of the case of a prank by some guy who submitted random junk of scientific words to science journals and got them published in few.

General Software Discussion / The software awards scam

I put out a new product a couple of weeks ago. This new product has so far won 16 different awards and recommendations from software download sites. Some of them even emailed me messages of encouragement such as “Great job, we’re really impressed!”. I should be delighted at this recognition of the quality of my software, except that the ’software’ doesn’t even run.

Talks about the unethical practice of the so-called download sites which don't even care to review the submissions and blindly issue a "5-star" award to every entry irrespective of whether it is genuine software or junk. Quite an interesting read!

Living Room / Exercies for most of us spending time in front of a computer
« Last post by sri on August 17, 2007, 10:17 AM »
We internet-addicts are a tragic group. We spend our days and nights creating and maintaining the greatest network of knowledge known to man, while wasting away (or, in most cases, ballooning up) in our extra-lumbar-support chairs. And what do we get in return for enslaving ourselves to our machines? Money? Fame? Sometimes, but more often than not all we get is a sore back, dry eyes, creaking finger joints, and carpal tunnel syndrome. What are we cubicle dwellers and home computer workers to do?! The answer is quite simple, actually: get some exercise.

Here’s a list of things included with StarOffice 8 that’s not in OpenOffice (from Wikipedia):

    * Several font metric compatible Unicode TrueType fonts containing bitmap representations for better appearance at smaller font sizes
    * 12 Western fonts (including Andale Sans, Arial Narrow, Arial Black, Broadway, Garamond, Imprint MT Shadow, Kidprint, Palace Script, Sheffield) and 7 Asian language fonts (including support for the Hong Kong Supplementary character set)
    * Adabas D database
    * StarOffice-only templates and sample documents
    * A large clip art gallery
    * Sorting functionality for Asian versions
    * File filters for additional older wordprocessing formats (including EBCDIC)
    * A different spell checker (note that OpenOffice.org does include a spell checker as well) and thesaurus
    * StarOffice Configuration Manager
    * Macro Converter for converting Microsoft Office VBA-macros to StarBasic

rjbull:

I use FeedReader at work and the proxy server and port that I specify in it work just fine.

Tick 'Use proxy server' and try manually entering the Address and Port.

I installed Snarfer and concluded that it's not for me.

It doesn't have

1) Portability
2) Ability to star important/useful feeds for later reference.

Hope I am wrong.

Lately, I've become quite fond of Snarfer. I has a small memory footprint, newspaper view & a comfortable interface. It's all good :)

Did you try FeedReader? I like FeedReader since it's also light-weight + it's portable.

"Free unlimited phone to phone calls (as long as both are jaxtr users)" is what I understood that site is about.

General Software Discussion / Re: iTunes folder content based on Albums?
« Last post by sri on August 06, 2007, 09:00 AM »
Thanks for the reply Carol.

Jim: I want to share my music collection with a friend. But she doesn't like to use iTunes. The common standard that pretty much everyone follows where I live is to organize music my movie (= album) name. Now I can organize by mp3s my album names and import them into iTunes, but then when I delete a file from iTunes, that file won't be deleted from wherever it resides (non-iTunes folder)...and I want iTunes to delete a mp3 even tho it isn't in its folder. Hope that made sense.
