And possibly install Collusion so you can see who's sharing what with who even though you haven't visited the "other" site.
Tried that - even with noscript, adblock and ghostery, it gets reaaaaally big and messy (and unusably slow) really fast :)

Facebook and Amazon may be sharing data. If this is the source, Ghostery can block this kind of behavior by blocking social plugins..
Yeah, and you do want this! Even if you've disabled the facebook app platform and aren't logged in to facebook, any site that has a like button or comment field will track you back to facebook. It's not unreasonable to think that other big sites are doing the same.

Well, have a look at this...

I will check Ghostery out and the article you linked. Thanks.

Note that the people behind Ghostery are kinda-involved with advertising, and there's a lot of tinfoil hat flak because of this.

However, Ghostery is better than not using anything of the sort, and as long as you don't join the "GhostRank" (off by default) there shouldn't be any privacy concerns. I like the addon :) (seems to be better in ffox than chrome, btw - no cookie blocking in chrome).

I have Genie Timeline as part of my tool stack, I want that story!
Well, start by reading here.

A bit after that, TimeLine had used the allotted storage on my fileserver. Instead of cleaning up previous versions, as it's supposed to be able to do, it simply said it had run out of space, and stopped backing up. Dunno if the "clean up previous" thing only works on USB drives or whatever, but this is a major flaw.

Went off to look at registration cost anyway, and the pro version was way too steep. Even the home edition was a bit pricey, considering you only get the software and no cloud storage or whatever. And looking at the feature matrix confused the hell out of me, since my home trial was doing stuff apparently only the pro version should handle (frequent backups, and manual file selection rather than the presets).

I uninstalled, and referred to both the no-cleanup-bug and feature-confusion. Got a mail from a sales rep some days later... which said I should look at the feature matrix to clear up any misunderstanding. Right, so much for reading comprehension skills, sales monkey :)

After running backup-less (apart from SpiderOak for the most important stuff) for a while, I ended up biting the bullet and going for CrashPlan after having used it on my work laptop (company paid). It's kinda clungy and resource hungry, and only after purchasing it I realized you can't do local backups to a network share (which pisses me off royally!), but at least it works.

Still haven't found any backup program I feel really good about, though. Timeline with bugs (and some of the stuff mentioned in the posts I linked to above) fixed + cloud sync of a specified backup subset would come very close. But it's not there.

Hummm, tried to repeat it - fired up Chrome, googled for "Office 2003 SBE". Didn't click anything, the went directly to amazon.co.uk (not logged in to my account), no references to Office. Tried amazon.com, still no dice.

In my main browser (firefox), I've got AdBlockPlus, NoScript and Ghostery. I never see any targeted ads :P

I really, really, really, really hope these snakes end up in jail. Society would be better if more lawyers knew what ruining people's lives means... first-hand.

I wouldn't buy the game even if it didn't have DRM.

For one, I'm done with EA - they're some of the worst scumbags in the games industry at the moment. Absorbing good franchises and turning them into crap.

But I'm not even going to download the cracked version. From what I've seen so far, the game has purrrrdy graphics, but that's about it - the gameplay has been dumbed down, and the city size is ludicrously restricted.

Here's a link to a much better game :-)

If you already have VMWare...why?
For testing purposes, I reckon. Dunno if it's smart to test a hypervisor on anything but bare metal, though :P (could be enough to test the install & setup procedure, but definitely not for testing actually running stuff on it).

I've had really nasty BSODs that resulted in pretty nasty data corruption
Ditto for nVidia in the past - why I tend to go for all AMD systems - plus whilst I know core i5/7 gives best performance I still think AMD gives best bang for the money!
-Carol Haynes (March 07, 2013, 12:17 PM)
Humm, I've had a fair share of different GPUs in the past - probably skewed in favor of nvidia now, but I've had a decent number of ATI as well. Have had BSODs on both (though not any driver-related since Vista arrived, for good reasons), but the only time I've had royally screwed up system afterwards has been with ATI drivers.

Might get best bang for the buck with AMD, I'd go for their CPUs if I needed to build something budget. But they don't perform anywhere near Intel CPUs at the same clock rate. It's an awful shame, they really shook up the market (and stayed on top for a while!) after they launched the AMD64 architecture... but haven't delivered anything worthwhile since Intel introduced core2. I miss some competition :(

Ihave been stung in the past mixing AMD and nVidia chipsets. Not sure about Intel and AMD/nVidia compatibility but since Intel seem to be getting out of the chipset game it is probably not worth wondering about any more!
-Carol Haynes (March 07, 2013, 12:17 PM)
Hm, out of the chipset market? I heard they're getting out of the motherboard market, but I didn't think they were going to leave the chipset market?

There were a few dodgy Catalyst releases early in version 12 but verion 13 seems rock steady to me.
-Carol Haynes (March 07, 2013, 12:04 PM)
I've had really nasty BSODs that resulted in pretty nasty data corruption - granted, that's quiiiite a few years ago, but that kind of thing leaves an impact. It's also not too long ago that you couldn't do system-wide DEP because the AMD/ATi drivers were crap (that'd give you wonderful BSODs too). While the situation might be OK now, it just doesn't give me a lot of confidence in their software engineers.

Can't say I have found a game that seems to suffer from not having it and strangely I have it installed (seems to be a requirement for some games weven though they don't use it!!!).
-Carol Haynes (March 07, 2013, 12:04 PM)
I prefer having it and not using it (goes for CUDA too), compared to not having it and not being able to run something that wants it :-)

Also, has anyone ever heard of a way to move an OS from a physical disk into a VM?
Sure, it's called V2P - there's also P2V, V2V, and P2P, for various scenarios. It's not entirely trivial, since you're possibly dealing with both conversion between virtual disk formats, as well as OS adjustments (drivers, boot devices).

I've had pretty decent success with Paragon Virtualization Manager, it's how I do Windows installs - set everything up in the comfort of a virtual machine while doing whatever on the host OS machine, when everything looks golden the OS gets a defrag, and then I can V2P+OsAdjust it on to the physical hardware.

Good luck with running your main rig hypervised - haven't seen any product that offers non-sucky graphics performance. Vmware comes close, but not if you want full DirectX (or OpenGL, if you swing that way) feature support (or performance).

Are you going for 1x8gig stick? I'd personally go for 2x4 instead - cheaper to replace if one goes bust (not to mention if one goes bust, you can run your system at 4gig while you're waiting for a new stick). ((Ok, so I personally went for 4x4, but if the choice was 1x8 or 2x4... :)).

I also wouldn't go for the wireless - but that's mostly because I've never had great success with it, wired plain old works and is cheap, and if the new übercharged wireless matures, it's going to be cheaper then. Often not a very good idea to be a tech first mover.

Dunno about GPU - haven't researched the market for a while, but I've been burned enough by bad AMD/ATi drivers (and noisy fans) that it'd take some convincing. And they still don't support PhysX, do they?

Why are you going for the *K CPU? OK, on the i5 you get HD4000 graphics instead of HD2000 (whereas on i7 you get HD4000 on both), but are you going to utilize that? You miss out on VT-d and trusted execution on the *K model, those might be more interesting in the long run.

As for power, you don't really need all that much. Unfortunately I lost the power readings I did on my current right (Corsair TX550M PSU, ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, i7-3770, 4x4gig Corsair DDR3-1600, Intel 520 SSD, WD 2.5" 300gig 10k-rpm velociraptor, Gigabyte 1gig GTX460), but I think it's somewhere along the lines of 50-70W idle? And I weren't able to push it to 300W even while maxing out both the GPU and the CPU. Go for something with decent cable management, low noise, and stable voltages (Be Quiet! and Corsair has some decent models - but do a lot of studying, stable CPU voltages is going keep your motherboard happy). Oh, and decent PSUs also mean less power drain, under load as well as idle (and the so-called "power-off", which really isn't unless you flip the switch on the PSU or the wall socket).

EDIT: I mostly went with that particular motherboard (over a cheaper micro-atx one) because it has onboard Intel NIC - having had bad experiences with other brands in the past. It also has onboard wifi, which was helpful when assembling the system. Wasn't really necessary, though - the i5 system on my new server has realteak or whatever, and I easily saturate the gigabit connection between them. And micro-atx boards might use a bit less power than full-sized ones? (A bit hard to make direct comparisons because the boards tend to have relatively different feature sets :)).

Because of this incident I do not have the same confidence in the latest version(s) of NTFS as in the older NTFS version(s)  from 2003/XP.
I would blame Oracle before I blame NTFS - seeing the amount of data-loss bugs and just plain weird behavior I see discussed on our companys internal mailing list, I'm surprised anybody feels safe using that in production.

NTFS is put under extreme stress testing by Microsoft. They're running 256-core machines with several terabytes of RAM, for chrissakes :) (there's a channel9 video somewhere where Mark Russinovich, iirc, logs onto that beast). And John Carmack has played with content-addressable data storage on NTFS (if you look a bit into the amounts of data required for content in their latest engines, well...)

Anyway, not saying it's impossible that there could be bugs in NTFS - just that given the choice of doubting NTFS or doubting whOracle, it's a no-brainer where I'd put my money :-)

Do a reinstall.

And start by installing on a HDD (or a virtual machine image (on a HDD) - I prefer this approach myself, since I can keep using my physical machine while the VM guest reboots those countless times) with the partition size you expect using on the SSD - once you've got everything set up, defrag the filesystem, and clone it to the target SSD.

Also, be sure you have a very well planned backup strategy before you boot from the SSD. Unless you don't care about the data you put on it, you do need something that can painlessly handle continuous backup. (Genie Timeline had some really nice features, but in the end I gave up on it - story for another post. CrashPlan isn't nearly as sweet, but it does the job almost well enough).

IE 10 still supports the meta tags that force ie 7-9 compatibility mode.
Keep in mind that those aren't perfect bug-for-bug emulations... which you'd need on some corporate sites :)
Not that I would need!
Consider yourself lucky.

Other people have to use SAP - or other similar monstrous kludges :)

EDIT: btw, http://ie.microsoft..../MandelbrotExplorer/ apparently does better in IE10 than FF19 and MostRecentChrome. (Just like each vendor's own techdemo tends to run best on it's own JS engine... ;p )

Living Room / Re: Microsoft may be after-taxed $1 Billion by Denmark
« Last post by f0dder on March 05, 2013, 07:46 AM »
It think that would depend on who's tax code you're basing that argument on. Laws vary greatly. There's no universal agreement since each nation so fiercely defends its own sovereignty and niggling 'cultural identity' that any attempt at establishing a uniform set of laws gets torpedoed less than a day after it's proposed.
The Danish government is obviously basing the argument on Danish law, since it was Microsoft Denmark who bought the Danish company Navision :-)

Be interesting to see what happens anyway.
Probably nothing - just like when the biggest tax scandal was McDonalds, or when it was Coca Cola, or when it was Mærsk, or when it was <insert greedy psychopathic megacorp name here>.

The megacorp in question moans and groans and threatens to move abroad, the politicians shit their pants and shut their mouths, and we're back to psychopathic business as usual.

So I can't sell code from one unit of my company in x country to Y country? I thought internal sales are part of the governments policies.
Microsoft bought Navision for 10.8 billion DKK, then sold it to Microsoft Ireland for a lot less than that - and substantially less than it's worth. That's tax evasion - and it's illegal.

Doesn't stop the psychopathic megacorps from using all sorts of tricks to try and do it, and they often get away with it due to loopholes. Might make it technically legal, but it doesn't make it morally acceptable.

The last time I was in Denmark, back in the mid-80's, the taxes were sky-high, so I can see why MS would try to do this, even though it's unethical even if legal.
1) the megacorps do this no matter how low the taxes are - if they could save even a penny by nasty psychopathic behaviour, they'd do it.
2) the taxes are only sky-high if you look at the absolute number without considering the value we get from it. (Or used to get - libertarian scumbags have been doing a good job of undermining various things and stuffing money in their (friends) pockets for a while).

Big computer companies need to "Think Different." And well before their customers start answering the question "Where do you want to go today" by saying "Far away from you!"
...and then there's the companies that make you want to "Do Much Evil". Like, after the umpteenth Just Another Vulnerability Alert.

If he had prefaced the article with that, and/or put that in the title, I'd not have a problem with it.  But it's a tech site, complaining about CS, and not being overly up front about that fact in the title or at the beginning of the article.

That's my problem with it.

Good reminder that first of the month is a good day for everyone to do your full system drive imaging backups.
...and at the speed of USB3, it's a little less painful than it used to be :)

I bought the 1TB version of the My Passport a month or two ago, for backups - a bit thinner than the 2TB version, but otherwise identical, and it's been working very well too. It's so darn convenient not having to mess with wall-wart power thingies, the drives are powered over USB3.

And eSata has always seemed a little flaky to me - flakier even than USB :P
