well , good luck with your endevours.
I used to have a serious rebuild every 2 years but now it seems to be half that.
I'm running an old (?) nforce3 with a dual 4400+ and an agp 6800GT, all water-cooled. single clicky raptor 74 for system, a 250 data drive and a 300 external backup.
My next move will probably be an sli capable board and new graphics. I go through fads with games and currently a nintendo DS/GBA supplies all my gaming. At considerably less cost too.
Half-life2 made me motion sick!!

The reason why I have little faith in the benefits of RAID0 is because for the cost of the drives and controller, Purchase more RAM and/or a higher speed CPU! There are speed improvements but they were neglible and RAM/CPU improvements are more tangible and effect the whole system not just i/o.
It wasn't a case of anything seeming much faster than a standard drive. The potential for data loss is not to be ignored either, that and the time/cost of keeping your data safe. I've had RAID0 fail due to PSU problems and you wouldn't even know that the psu was the cause from the symptoms either.
The areas of improvement are in specific situations which YOU don't necessarily practice. Also, If you see a boot-up increase of 5 seconds over non-raid and you boot 3 times a week... 15 seconds... so what?

Anyway, the data crunchers that I've set up at work with and without RAID, there's been small speed improvements with RAID) but nothing worth bothering about.

This is a good article here. I'd call this the definitive site for storage matters.

a bit late to the party, oh well..

I've used 2 74s with a promise caching controller and 256mb dedicated cache and I must say, it seemed hardly worth it. without measuring anything, I didn't notice any significant performance gains. 74s are a bit 'ticky' too.
Anyone who poo poo'd water cooling, well it's pretty simple these days and a lot of fun. I can hear my mosfets whine now so one noise takes over from the others.
have a picture of real world water cooling, hehe!

atguard was wonderful in its time (til symantec got hold of it!).

but I would suggest setting up ipcop on an old machine and not having to bother about resource usage on your main pc.

I don't really see the point because if the old files were in any way damaged, all you have is a bit perfect copy of a damaged file?
The same would apply to a bit for bit copy of a partition wouldn't it?

When I ran out of activations with roboform. I sent them an email and was up and running again in minutes.
Whatever, the point I make is that roboform have ALWAYS been most helpful with me.

As for hardware, check your drive controllers are not using PIO mode.

try this:
take out the cmos battery and see if it boots.
Resetting the bios is not what I mean either.

(I've had fried batteries produce the same symptoms).

Living Room / Re: Nero 7,will you be upgrading ,if not,are there any alternatives?
« Last post by jpfx on October 29, 2005, 04:29 PM »
I no complaints about the way nero works. The fraction I use works perfectly.
I think a lot of people would be happier with an installation procedure that offered more choice. That way, the apps that are never used could be avoided.
I will probably upgrade, maybe when 7.1 comes out.

Plays PAL perfectly afterwards.

Only if your TV supports PAL

No.
One of the menu options is what sort of TV you have, if it's set for NTSC, then the picture the DVD player puts out is NTSC.

with a philips DP642, to change to region free:
switch on and open disc drawer
enter 7 8 9 OK 0

Plays PAL perfectly afterwards.

That's that, I believe the last 0 is the region. If you screw up your DVD it's not my fault.
