I bought WinPatrol Plus during a previous promotion.  I stayed with that version for awhile because I'm not a fan of "the cloud."  But this post prompted me to check the latest update.  It has an option to opt out of supplying cloud stats.  Network traffic should only be incoming in that case.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has been holding off due to cloud cover. :)

TopmostToggle 1.6.0.0 Now uses ToolTip to indicate Topmost state when toggling it. Less intrusive than MsgBox and only displays for 1/2 a second.

TopmostToggle 1.5.0.0  Added Shift Right Click to toggle Alt-Tab visibility(you'll see the frame style change.)

Also removed the MsgBox that tells you Topmost was toggled. Again, you can observe a lot by watching. :)

ReRun 1.9.0.0 ReRun now saves the list of apps on exit and loads them on start up.

The first fixes for V 6 Final are out.  6.01 beta.  See Newsbin main page under Extras.

Guess I may as well remove it from the list and go straight to yahoo. :)

I generally use Scroogle or AltaVista.  Although I notice when I do an AV search now it says Yahoo.  They bought them maybe?

General Software Discussion / Re: Virtual cd/dvd drive software (2011)

WinCDEmu is what I use.  Double click an .iso to mount. I can even use my Tray app.  When I "open" the CD tray for that drive, it unmounts it.  Neat. :)

Glad to hear.  I'm also happy with it so far (5 minutes using it!).  As long as it doesn't disconnect on bootup, or bug out, I'm fine.  I know Daemon is very reliable and all, but it has one of those installations that are very complicated and makes you wonder why such a little program has such an involved install/uninstall process.

I haven't tried using it in any persistent fashion.  I like that I can double click an image and have it mounted, without it showing a drive when I'm not using it as most do.

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: Open command prompt at current directory
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 12, 2011, 07:50 PM »
In XP I used to add it to the context menu just a registry entry.

PromptHere can be used on XP, Vista, and W7 both 32 and 64 bit. It doesn't use the Glass blur effect on XP.  The glass effect is optional.  Set UseGlass=0 in .ini file if you don't want it.  You can also hit the Mouse hotkey in a blank space in a folder to open the prompt in that folder.  No need to navigate up first.

Edit: I updated PromptHere so that it no longer uses a macro to get the path of the current folder. It gets the info directly from Windows:

I like Inno myself.  Esp. if you program in Pascal, if there isn't an Inno function to do something it's nearly as easy to do it in Pascal script. I may go back to it once the "portable" fad passes. :)

I found a form designer for FreeBASIC that's similar to delphi/VB.  It's free and can be downloaded from this page:

http://www.freebasiccompiler.com/

The latest FreeBASIC release for Win32 can be downloaded here:

http://www.freebasic...t/index.php/download

This is nice.  Place controls on a form etc..  The only thing that threw me at first was figuring out how to get stuff out of the control(such as text from the text control.) If you press F8 you get a dialog of user written functions to make it easier.

Like Delphi or VB you can compile and run from the IDE and not deal with a Window Procedure.  The screen shot below is an app I did to try it out. It weighs in as a 50 KB stand-alone exe.

Developer's Corner / Re: Bourne / Bash Shell Scripting Resources

BTW - many of the online resources I cited are available as PDF, and so should be printable at home or by any freindly neighborhood printing service.
Lulu.com also has many of them available has hard and soft covers, but they're not exactly cheap.

I still have some binders kicking around. Ironically one has a copy of bind that I downloaded in Postscript format and printed on my HP Deskjet 500.  Used some ink but cheaper than buying the book, even in paperback. :)

The O'Reilly "Cookbook" series are usually a safe bet.  Depends what your main interest is. If it's more sysadmin or programmer oriented.

I'm pretty sure I had an earlier edition of this book:
http://www.amazon.co...obbins/dp/0596100299

The one I had was pocket size with a blue cover.  But the chapters in this are familiar.  Covers sh, bash and korn shells.  There should be a lot of useful examples if you are running a unix type OS.

Living Room / Re: 64 Bit OS - When to Switch ?
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 08, 2011, 03:19 PM »
One other caveat would be USB devices with drivers in the firmware.  An example is my Epson Stylus C88+.  It has a Vista driver and works fine if I hook it to the Vista64 machine.  But if I hook it to Windows 7 it won't serve the driver properly over the network.  Since the driver is in firmware, they don't bother with making any drivers available for download.  But if you ask around before buying a printer both Vista and W7 have been around long enough you should be able to learn what to expect.

For an existing machine I'd take a look on Best Buy for the package closest to what you have.  If it comes with Windows 64 bit then it's likely you'll be able to drive all your hardware.

My quad came with 8 GB ram and Vista64 SP1.  About the only stuff that absolutely won't run is old 16 bit programs.  But I don't have any Dos left overs.  Really the main difference I noticed was the booting is a bit slower. The registry is more complicated plus it has Wow or Windows On Windows to run 32 bit apps.  Once it's booted you can't tell any difference.  Native 64 bit code is nice though.  Newsbin Pro 64 bit is way smooth.

I'd just try to avoid getting burned on hardware if you have an unpopular device.  Prompted by your post I took a quick look on Best Buy.  The Intel I7 machine desktop packages are coming with 10 GB ram, BDROM, 1.5 TB HD and 2 free PCI Express slots for $1300.  They still stick you with USB 2.0 but you can use one of the PCI Express slots to put in a USB 3.0 card with 2 ports.

Wish I had $1500 to splurge!! :)

General Software Discussion / Macrium Reflect has released V 5

According to the support forum, V 5 for Free Edition is still several months down the road.

I've used NewsBin Pro in the past, and I always found it slow and crashy

I got in the habit of running with Open All Groups In New Tabs unchecked.  The early 5 versions seemed to use a lot of memory otherwise.  Somewhere along the way, in the middle 5 versions it got very stable. Also I forget what version things were sufficiently automated that I could double-click an .nzb it it was usually processed without intervention. I'd just come back later to an empty download queue.  You can also unrar to another physical drive, which helps reduce thrashing.

If you've totally weened yourself from looking at headers then the alternatives may be sufficient.  But there are some groups I like to watch and it's just easier to get new headers with newsbin.

edit: btw that NzbMatrix is a good deal.  Can't go wrong for a bit over a buck a year. :)

Are you running a Linux system?  If so look through the start up scripts in /etc and see how they do what they do.  The XWindow manager applets usually just pass some params to one of those scripts.

Thanks for the info.  I've already got Newsbin but chances are I'll not re-up Usenet Explorer.  I kept up with both because they were adding automatic features.  But it looks like the reader you recommend already has them. I'll check out the sites/readers.

I got the reference.  But explaining a joke is kind of like death warmed over.

But does that count if the joke has been resurrected?

Only if the voting is in Chicago. :)
