Developer's Corner / Re: Licensing Free Software
« Last post by Renegade on September 19, 2012, 10:02 PM »
There is the case where your software is distributed on CD in a magazine or some similar method where the publisher doesn't directly profit from the software, but does charge for the media, etc. You might want to check that out. For examples of those kinds of clauses, check out the licenses in my software (in the installer) or ALTools (I did those licenses). They're pretty much what you're looking for I think.

You guys ******* kill me! Ooops, just noticed that this thread is still in the Living Room. Let me rewind a bit and censor myself, and by the time you read this, all will be good, except for the fact that you will never be able to decode my original #-letter censored string. :P Have a happy <copied_from_before>*******</copied_from_before> day! :P ;D

This week being a complete nightmare, after reading ^that^ I now have to ram a fork through one of my testicles in the hopes that I will wake up screaming.

Hopefully, you have some musical sensibilities, and this will save your testicles:

Oh, I should mention that I was looking for the exact opposite of what you've mentioned - i.e. A Japanese style with more western concepts.
That seems to be the more popular preference.  It's the same with the music I like, I seem to prefer the old-fashioned things.  What I worry about is let's say I was doing this for a career...would most people think it's old hat, or would they enjoy it?  Most people seem to think of my preferences as a been-there-done-that thing, but to me it really is a strong preference.  That's why I want to try a few of these things and see if what I like is something others would enjoy, or am I just boring them?  I'll have some musical things up soon and I'll be interested in people's reactions.

I LOATHE market segmentation, but, that's kind of what you're talking about in a way. (I'm using the terms in a kind of bastardized way there.)

If you think that there is a market for something, then, hey, go for it.

Thing is, different demographics like different things.

When you're 20, you don't know your mouth hole from your ear hole, and anything with alcohol is good. Once you've been around the block a few times though, you learn that not all booze is created equal, and that HOW you drink it is also a factor.

Same goes for pretty much anything. You can fool kids into sucking up damn near anything. You only need to coat it in sugar and they'll gobble it up. It doesn't matter if you've got sugar coated donkey poo.

So, if you're trying to reach a specific demographic, you need to know what they will swallow.

Also, inside of any given demographic, you'll only be able to reach a certain portion, and of them, only some will be "on board".

If you think about it, run these scenarios through your head for people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, etc.:

  • Furniture
  • Cars
  • Medicine
  • Medical insurance
  • Booze
  • Clothes
  • Phones
  • Computers
  • Sex (porn, or things that are sex-based, e.g. night clubs)
  • Music
  • etc.

The attitudes towards those things differs greatly in those different age brackets.

Blah... I'm rambling.

In short, weigh those considerations against what you're thinking of, then, go back, adjust, rinse, repeat, etc., until you are happy.

For my own software, my audience runs the gambit of all ages. The only important thing for my software is, "Do you want to learn music easier?" Done. That fits pros, amateurs, 20's, 10's, 50's, and everywhere in between -- as long as they play a musical instrument. (Well, one other consideration, but that's enough of me rambling on.) :)

Necrothread~! RISE, THREAD RISE~! :P

Just saw this:

http://blogs.avg.com...sumer/p4ssw0rd-myth/

It’s nothing new that there are bad people out there on the internet who, if they should get the chance, would steal your personal details and your banking ones too.

The news is full of hacking these days, with companies, multinational organisations, governments and individuals on the receiving end of some pretty serious privacy breaches.

Obviously, most of us don’t have a say in government or company security policy so it’s up to us to keep our own digital lives safe and while this can involve a number of steps including both software and hardware, it often comes down to passwords.

Your password is your basic online defence, the key to much of your information. We at AVG and other security experts recommend you to use a different password for each site (or at least a few variations) limiting any damage were your password to be compromised. However, we understand that most people aren’t overly worried by hacking and multiple passwords can be difficult to remember.

Interestingly, randomly generated passwords have become all the rage over the last few years and we at AVG have recommended passwords with a mix of characters and symbols. Sometimes these come in the form of passwords that are generated completely at random such as PhuR7Tr$.

More at the link.

Yeah, old, but on topic and still valuable.

Just click on the placeholder on the right and press the apostrophe " ' " to change units.

That's pretty darn cool! :)

Second, I think like a japanese animator but my eye prefers american style.  I'd like to see if maybe I can get the japanese techniques to do american style cartoons, does anyone know of any examples?

A long time ago a Japanese friend did this for me:

Fuck-Satan.jpg

She did a fantastic job of mixing a lot of things in there.

Basically, I think you can get some really cool things happening if you work with your artist closely.

Vision is a hard thing to pin down, and relies upon closely working with people. The alternative is to spend a lot of money for multiple versions. :(

Good grief! Why not just fill a thread with gold! :P

There's simply too much in this thread to go on about -- I mean that in a very good way. :D

I was never that into musique concrète or "mashup" approaches to art. Found art is ok. But to me it's nowhere near as powerful as something conceived, created, and directed by someone from scratch. Most collage and mashup art seems (to me) to be little more than playing with digital Colorforms. And about the best I can say about that (when it succeeds) is: "Hmm...interesting"  or "How clever!"

In general, I think you're bang on there. Mashups are rarely very good.

That being said, I've seen a good number of documentary films that are mostly film clips, images, and audio clips put together in a coherent way, and with narrative over top. Some are piss-poor, while some are simply fantastic with brilliant execution.

I think doing a mashup well is just then all that much more difficult to pull off.

Anyways, back to drinking and doing my own "art", which is a far cry away from the current art topic. :)

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have discovered a way to use sound waves to levitate individual droplets of solutions containing different pharmaceuticals. While the connection between levitation and drug development may not be immediately apparent, a special relationship emerges at the molecular level.

If you could cut out some and shorten them, they'd be a lot better. You kind of just get the feeling that nothing is happening while you wait and wait and wait. Less is definitely more. Maybe some voice over or subtext could help to make things faster.

And... This thread has prompted me to tighten up my anti-spam parameters. Hopefully I'll get a lot less now. If not, then tighten again...

Be careful with that if it's a server side filter. Never tune a spam filter past 90-95% anything in that range is gold. Attempting to go past that is just going to (cost you ham) FP/break it.

They are server side. But the numbers are all absolute and score based. Things are still getting through though, so it seems ok.

What was pissing me off was the 2 different client-side filters weren't taking out the spam that I'd flagged server-side with "[SPAM]" in the subject line. Like how much of a hint do they need?

Email is just completely broken thanks to spammers.

I could make out some of it, but the audio quality has been degraded so much that much is muffled. :(

PC silliness is simply rampant. Here's something so utterly non-PC and so utterly insane that it's just hysterically funny:

* 1967 - Australians overwhelmingly vote to change the constitution to give Aborigines full citizenship rights, and allow parliament to make laws to benefit aboriginal people. Previously, Aborigines were governed under flora and fauna laws.

i.e. They were "plants/animals" before.  :o

Speaking of spam, anyone had trouble with spam text-messages being sent to your cell #? If so, were you able to make it stop and how?

Pretty much all of the spam I have ever had has been from the carrier.
