Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Google Reader - Mini-Review
« Last post by tomos on March 14, 2013, 04:40 PM »
I guess now I have to figure out another how. After clicking unread/read column header the oldest unread is first (Clicking the date column header mixes them up again of course)

Going even further off topic .... oh well  :P

Sort by date so as most recent on top of list.
Click the read/unread column header twice *should* work then (does here anyway)

Living Room / Re: Classic Shell brings back start menu for Win8, plus lots more
« Last post by tomos on March 10, 2013, 03:33 PM »
I uninstalled 3.6.2 (current version is 3.6.5).
Machine would not reboot (went to black screen with cursor).

So I did a system restore via the recovery disk. Now it's installed 'again'.
I'll probably go to their forum when I have the time and ask for a recommendation.

It's obviously to do with Classic Shell, but I do have other tweaks made, so I cant blame it solely.
The dangers of tweaking :-\

General Software Discussion / Re: Are you going to wait for Windows 9?
« Last post by tomos on March 10, 2013, 03:23 PM »
F8 no longer does anything in Windows 8 so you can't boot to the advanced startup options. Apparently UEFI allows you to force advanced options but on older BIOS machines that isn't available. So to get to the advanced startup settings you have to boot into windows, to get into safe mode you have to boot windows!!!! Brilliant

I read today that Shift+F8 should work:
Turn on your Windows 8 PC and immediately press and hold Shift + F8 keys till use see Advanced Boot Options screen from where you can boot into the Safe Mode. Do note that you need to press and hold the hotkey while the POST is in progress.
http://www.intowindo...e-mode-in-windows-8/

I tried it on my laptop - it didnt work, but this may be becuse of how Lenovo have it set up (it has a button that will start to a bunch of options including the boot menu).

This guy is worth checking out - Phillip Bloomw - filmmaker.
Won awards for his documentary How to Start a Revolutionw - I havent seen it myself. I came across him in a comment to a camera review. He does a lot of testing of 'small' digital video cameras ('small' being by cameraman standards) including dslr cameras. Amazing quality video with full original resolution quality available to download on vimeo.

Very short film of a salt water aquarium:

A finance guy changes career:

171 videos on his youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/philipbloom

258 vids on vimeo
http://vimeo.com/philipbloom

I think I'll be checking out a few more of those :-)

Another note about the version I just uploaded -- it includes these new improvements:
  • [Improvement] When switching out of object mode, if an object was selected, it's bounding region becomes selected in normal mode; especially useful for applying effects.
  • [Improvement] If user tries to select a region in Object selection mode containing no objects, SC automatically switches to region selection mode and selects region.
  • [Improvement] Double-clicking an object in region-select mode will now switch to object mode and select the object under cursor.

The middle item is the most important one I think.  I know that new users were becoming confused when they found themselves in "object selection mode" after adding an object, and didn't know how to get out and back into normal region selection mode.  Now if you select a region in object mode that has no objects in it, you'll be popped back out to normal selection mode.  I hope this will save new users from some pain.

this sounds very helpful

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Debenu PDF Maximus Free
« Last post by tomos on March 08, 2013, 12:10 PM »
Sounds like a very good deal,
note:-

Debenu     Hi guys,

We have now updated the fine print to read that you can install/uninstall the software at anytime - the 3 day rule does not apply.
  •     After you make a purchase of this BitsDuJour discount promotion, Debenu PDF Maximus may be used indefinitely.
  •     Debenu PDF Maximus is licensed per computer, and not per user.
  •     Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop, but Debenu PDF Maximus may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them.
  •     Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.
  •     License activation isn't required. what's this?
  •     This promotion cannot be used to upgrade or extend an existing license.
  •     You can install/register the software at any time.
  •     Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted.
  •     Support is provided up to when the next major version is released.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 10

^it's a little more complicated -

XYplorer file manager has this feature -
Menu >Tools >Customise List >Manual Sorting
then
drag n drop to sort.

I havent used it in a while - it doesn't seem to work with large thumbnails, but does work with the details-with-[small]-thumbnail view.

Will work with thumbnails if:

By default, if you left click on a thumbnail, it will display at full size. This makes it difficult to drag! Go to:
menu >Tools >Configuration >Thumbnails >Turn off: popup image on mouse down (bottom of window).
Then try it as instructed above and it works fine.

I havent used it much myself -
I presume it's only set for current tab - and not sure if it sticks e.g. if you navigate away from folder

I know XYplorer does (a) - not sure about (b).

I dont think Dopus does (a) or (b) -
just searched the help file and didnt find anything in that direction.

They probably didn't realise until somewhat later how ridiculous and potentially seriously dangerous/threatening to the public and civic society they might have looked in the public's eyes, in retrospect. Little boys playing with the Big Boys and their Big Boy toys - "and...and, like, we're using REAL BULLET-PROOF VESTS! and...and MACHINE-GUNS! and...and LIVE BULLETS! and...and HELICOPTERS!, and...and we're BREAKING DOWN DOORS! and...and things like THAT Mum!".
Sheesh.    :-[

;D thanks for the laugh anyway, to brighten up the otherwise not-so-sunny news.

I want to see them !
