Living Room / $10 for a Facebook Post? Huh?
« Last post by Renegade on September 23, 2012, 08:58 AM »
No. Really? Like I'm going to pay $10 for a Facebook post... Is someone smoking crack?

Screenshot - 2012-09-23 , 11_47_13 PM.png

FB has a "Promote" link, and I clicked it to see what it would cost after writing a snarky little post that's not appropriate for DC (has to do with fundamentals of logic that are extremely offensive to many people - I'm not kidding). Meh... If it's like $0.50, I might. Whatever.

$9.50!?!?

Well, *I'm* not smoking crack... :P

I love that education one! It's so true, and yet, most people will completely ignore it and blunder on in life completely ignorant that they are destroying their children when they send them to school. Very sad... :'(

This Samsung commercial seems to start out a little like the video in the original post:

Not sure what you're referring to there. Ah... I see...

You can't use HTTPS here or it will break. Not sure why. Ask mouser.

And now I see the problem is solved. :)

Edit 2:

I love that commercial~! :D

Having said that the overnight queue of 1300 people outside the London Regent's Street store are all to stupid to know how to report an error to Apple.

It's not an error. You just don't "get" it. :P ;D

Says my inner-fanboi-devil's-advocate~! :)

The only good thing is that when iPhone 5 is released most Apple users won't be able to find their stores ;-)

Seriously if they have ANY sense whatsoever they will immediately replace the maps App it the old Google version and admit defeat. It will be months at best (and probably years) before this debacle is fixed and by that time no one - not even the Apple fanboys - will trust Apple Maps ever again!

It took them a couple versions to get the alarm clock working properly. How long was that? :P

HAHAHAHAHAHA~!

That wasn't a joke either! ;D Which makes it all the funnier~! ;D

Apple Stole Clock Design For iOS 6, Swiss Federal Railways Says

It gets better...

I sent the story from my SAMUNG tab to my email, checked the link on my desktop, then posted here. But the two articles are very different. The original is quite a bit harsher than the one at "apparently" the same link.

Yep. Not worth even trying. Nobody gives a poop. And neither should you.

I tried that out. Pretty nifty! Seems to work very well. I like how they did the UI.

Errr... not that *I* really care though. Or maybe I should have waited until tomorrow to say that...

Call of Duty has a new trailer out (for pre-release sales). A few interesting things in there. Trent Reznor does the music for one. (Any 9-inch Nails fans here?)

The Basement version of this post is here (with the more interesting stuff). ;) [NSFF]

Mouser created an interactive audio story game engine, way back in NANY 2007, and was quite upset that nobody ever recorded any MP3 stories for it, other than Della's, which was included with the app as a demo.

You could say it's the "audiobook" version of the "choose your own adventure" genre.

I just checked it out. Looks like a good start, but the authoring seems a bit difficult for some people (needing to get your hands dirty in XML). It would do well to have an actual authoring tool go with it. Yeah, I know. The authoring tool would be a lot more work than the player itself. Been there done that.

But it does seem to be on the right track. Voice recognition would be very cool, and even possible as you'd only need to recognize a very small number of words, e.g. a, b, c, or 1, 2, 3, etc. You wouldn't need one of those horribly expensive services that are web based, slow, and prone to breaking with poor connections, etc. (I've seen some engine that can be stand alone -- forgetting the name right now.)

General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ... RAMdisk opinions
« Last post by Renegade on September 23, 2012, 02:55 AM »
Caveat: some improperly coded applications don't handle speed all that well and may become unstable when using a RAMdisk as opposed to a physical HD. Rare. But it does happen.

I'm curious - how would you manage that? I mean, manage to get a program not to work there?

I'm still curious, so going to give the freeware version here a shot:

http://memory.datara...ces/software/ramdisk

4 GB is lots. I can't see needing more unless you're doing some pretty heavy lifting, though programs like Photoshop and video editing can easily chew that up... regular use? Seems like tonnes.

Anyway, now that I'm in a thimk mode - and semi-sober - I'm wondering how the rest of you feel on the topic.  Would you use?

Well, being semi-sober is a serious problem. I'd recommend against using any of those candy-ass little pint glasses and get yourself a respectable flower vase. Good for holding about a pitcher of beer, or a pitcher of scotch. Either way, you're in better shape than those pint-holding posers. :P

Do get a glass or crystal flower vase though, and not a ceramic one -- let's people see just how serious your alcohol problem thirst is. But don't call it a 'flower vase'. Instead, call it something a bit cooler, like, "this is my not-candy-assed beer glass, you pansy!" :P Insults at the end always sound cooler too. South Park has many good ones that you can use for inspiration:

NSFW
Donkey-raping shit-eater
Transvestite donkey-witch

Do try to keep it as plain as possible. There are ones out there that look identical to pint glasses, but just much bigger.

Anyways, that should help solve the unwanted-sobriety problem. Let me know if you need more help there as I am quite the expert on the topic. :D

For RAMdisks, I don't use them as computers now as so fast, and I have an SSD, so there's not much point. I'm probably of less use to you in that area.

EDIT:

Back to the real problem here... This is what I mean:

On a somewhat related topic: am I the only one that purposefully removes affiliate links from URLs before purchasing things, unless I deliberately want to support a particular person?

Depends. If the site is a spammy, canned, site - yes. If the site is actually doing something other than copy & paste and has real unique value - no. I have no problems supporting those that actually DO something. But I can't stand the spammy crowd of affiliate marketers. I've always found affiliate marketing distasteful. (Irrationally so I admit.) Marketing/selling purely for money is simply repellent to me, whereas marketing/selling because you actually BELIEVE in something gets me on board. It's purely about judging intent for me -- irrational, and error prone I know... but...

Developer's Corner / Re: WiX Installer - not really a review
« Last post by Renegade on September 23, 2012, 12:15 AM »
Hmmm... Looks about the same as the last I checked it.

Is there any compelling reason to use it over Inno Setup or the VS setup project?

What I would REALLY like is a cross platform installer that is somewhat sane. And free. I don't have $2,500 or whatever just waiting to burn on an install-builder. :( Sigh...

Got any recommendations? Seems like you've been around the block a few times with installers. :D

Every time he sits down, Quebec separates.

There once was an Ontarian who's life long dream it was to be a Newfie. One day the man finally saw his doctor about it. The doctor examined him and gave him the prognosis, "Well, if you really want to be a Newfie there is a surgery I can perform, but I have to remove 1/3 of your brain." The Ontarian was so excited, he agreed to do it right away.

During the surgery however, the doctor's hand slipped. The doctor was so upset that he sat next to the man in the recovery room until he woke up. Finally the Ontarian woke up. The doctor immediately explain what happened, and told the Ontarian, "I am so sorry sir, my hand slipped during the surgery and I accidentally cut out 2/3 of your brain instead of 1/3."

The Ontarian looked confused and replied "Que ce que vous dit monsuier?"

@wraith808, jibz, renegade…

Has anyone asked for a discount? If not, I'll ask and see what is the reaction.

Would someone undertake a brief review of the program?

A discount would definitely motivate me. I still need some time to evaluate though as I use Editplus and occasionally Notepad++.

I'll try to review it, but I don't do any review without using it for at least a few weeks. I might need a reminder as I forget sometimes.

Sorry I can't help. I never do any printing in C#, so anything I say is really just guesswork. Is there a "custom" size that you can define? If you have that, you can create a bitmap of what you want to print and get its size... But again... I do all that kind of stuff onscreen.

Just FYI - Similarly, I don't have much sympathy for people that change their minds afterwards, but provided that they are properly informed beforehand.
