General Software Discussion / Re: Grocery Shopping Software
« Last post by app103 on January 23, 2007, 03:03 AM »
This is the only one I know of and it doesn't have all the features you are looking for.

Recipe Keeper Plus

It's primarily a recipe holder that will create shopping lists based on recipe ingredients.

It will also allow you to add to that list from the standard grocery list items that are built in, and allow you to add additional items to the standard list.

Yes, it does allow you to specify product name, size.

I found it a bit clunky to use, and it looked very win95-ish.

It also included a ton of unrelated things like household budget, a few really stupid games, etc.

They also have Recipe's Galore, which just looks like a scaled down version of the other program I just mentioned.

http://www.reg-software.com/Recipe.htm

I use my ToDo list program to make my shopping lists.

I add new items that are not in my master list to the ToDo side and after I am done shopping I move everything to the Done side.

As I run out of things, I move them from Done back to ToDo.

When I am making my full list, I just go down the Done side and move anything I may have forgotten to the ToDo side. Keeps me from forgetting things.  Then I just print it out.

It's kind of a primitive way of doing things, but it works for me and I find it faster than any other method I have tried. (at least it's not as primitive as writing it out by hand)

Hi App,

For my benefit could you please explain how it makes sense?

Thank you,
'steader

In order to make this easier to understand, I'll have to explain a little something that may seem a bit unrelated at first, but in the end will make it easier for you to understand what the directions of the arrows mean:

The average chat client for online chat (IRC, etc) has a userlist located on the right side-->

I am a regular in a few Italian chatrooms. It is a custom of Italians to say they are away by just simply typing "<<"...which is the opposite direction of the userlist, meaning they are not really here.

When they come back they type ">>" which points at the userlist, meaning they are here.

To illustrate and for you to see this in action, I have screen captured a bit from an italian chatroom that I am a regular in:

SNAG-0170.png

In this screenshot, the 3 guys have said their goodnights and are gone..2 having left the room, but one has not, but he has gone to bed, so he's not here, even though his name remains on the userlist.

<< = not here
>> = here

When gri uses "<<" he means to go to the link and talk about it there (not here)

When gri uses ">>" he means to go to the link and talk about it here.

>winding< means related topics to current discussion...they could be anywhere...and you can reply at either/or. But to keep up with what is going on in the full conversation, you'd have to subscribe to be notified when there is a post at both, otherwise you could lose half the conversation. Note that the arrows in it point to both 'here' and 'not here'.

It's sort of like when 2 threads are started on a forum with a related discussion and you end up quoting yourself from one thread to the other and you have to keep reading both to stay up to date with the conversation. If it was simply stated at some point that they are related, then a forum mod could merge them. But if the discussions occur on 2 different forums, you can't merge them.

Understanding Italian chat code made it very easy for me to understand gri's code. There are those that thought it was backwards, but it's not.

Or maybe I should adopt gri's linking style?

app103,

What about adopting gri's style
of equal subscribing to winding topics..
                        about linking style ?

Thank you for the offer, but I am really only a member of DonationCoder's forum.

This is home. This is where I stay.

I also like to keep things easy to understand for everyone, explaining things out and making them as simple as possible, for the average person to understand.

Your style of linking, while it makes sense to me, doesn't make sense to the average person....so I can not do that.

SMF Forum Mods / Re: Is there a better way to handle Gri's posts?
« Last post by app103 on January 21, 2007, 10:21 AM »
- even if Gri were found to be on the outer limits of eccentricity, haven't we got room to adopt him/her as our very own eccentric?

If we got rid of all the eccentrics on this forum, would we have anybody left? (me included)  ;D

btw...gri might be a bit bitter, but his bitterness is not directed at this forum. He actually likes it here...or he wouldn't post at all.

His bitterness lies in what he has learned from other forums about how intolerant people can be. This has caused him to take measures to protect what he has to say from being deleted.

If his bitterness was directed towards DonationCoder, he wouldn't be posting here, and we would be a warning comment in his signature at other forums and he would 'ban' himself from here.

That being said, I like gri. He both amuses and intrigues me. He has some rather unique and cool ideas, that I have noticed in his own forum.

His blogs section and public email for example...very novel. I think if I were to start another forum for my chat community, I would probably add something like that to it....at least the blogs section. It is similar to the personal area here, except that everyone can read it, subscribe to it, but only the author can post replies to it....with each author having their own personal thread to speak what's on their mind and write articles.

Imagine if we had something like that here on this forum. Mouser wouldn't be making posts like this one. He would already have articles to use for it.

But it can be a confusing concept, and I don't think it would go over too well here. There is enough confusion for ordinary people that first come here on how to do things already, such as how to get license keys for some of the software. I think the addition of a blog thread section would just be too much for some of us to handle, especially someone that stumbles across this site long after it was implemented.

Yes, gri is eccentric...but we all are, to some degree. He is also creative and intelligent and loves SMF forums and wants to improve them. Maybe something he thinks up next week could be the next big thing. One never knows.

It would be nice if we could somehow convince him that this forum isn't like the others and he doesn't have to fear his posts being deleted by intolerant admins and that he could post freely here without the need to link to his posts on his own forum. He really does want to participate and be part of the community, at least in the SMF section.

https://www.donation...27.msg49672#msg49672

Then see in gri's words, that I am correct, here:

Or maybe I should adopt gri's linking style?  :P

Developer's Corner / Re: How long should a software time trial be?
« Last post by app103 on January 19, 2007, 11:53 PM »
I think a 30 day free trial and then maybe 60-90 days after purchase for a refund would be good limits.

If you are still using the software after 3-4 months it's safe to say it works for you and you like it.

From what I can see, Gri is an often misunderstood guy.

Almost anywhere he posts, there are those that think what he has to say is nonsense and they delete his posts...posts that Gri feels contains valuable information.

So Gri now makes his posts where he feels they are safe...his own forum. They won't be deleted there. Then he links to his posts in a rather unusual way on other forums.

If these posts on other forums linking to his on his own forum are deleted by forum admins, the original information from the post on his forum is still safe.

I have seen posts by Gri on other forums related to the true meaning of the term "free speech".

What Gri posts is often a bit confusing, but not always. This is partly due to the fact that he has a little trouble with English. (it's not his native language) It is also due to people having a lack of patience, and also because they are unwilling to really try to understand what he's trying to say.

If you take the time to understand, you might see it's not all nonsense and it actually makes sense...a lot of sense sometimes. Some of it is even genius, in my opinion.

Don't bash the guy for thinking outside the box. Where would we be today if nobody dared to think differently? Most of the technology we enjoy and depend on today, came from people that thought outside the box...people like Gri.  :)

btw...it is my understanding that he wasn't really banned from the smf forum. He 'bans' himself, as a public display of disapproval of intolerant people, if I understand it correctly.

What is funny is how many people actually bought it. Every time I buy out someone's full collection of old atari games, this one is almost always in it. (I buy old atari collections at yard sales)

There is a link at the bottom of the article that leads to here: http://www.procrastinus.com/

There is a procrastination study from the University of Calgary that you can participate in. It will give you some feedback at the end of it.

According to my results, I am in the top 10% in terms of procrastination.  :-[

The results also come with suggestions on how to procrastinate less, which I did not publish in my blog post with my results.

If you want to see their tips, you'll have to take the test.  ;)

And if you had fun taking that test, there are plenty more studies here: http://psych.hanover...search/exponnet.html

Maybe this should be the "My fav DC app" thread?

Which in that case, I would have to say mine isn't an app at all. It's the Dina font. I couldn't live without that. That is the one thing that gets the most use on my pc, other than a few apps that I have made.

DYDLO got a lot of use when I was on dialup because it was better at disconnecting me faster than the normal way of doing things, and after an Explorer crash it was the only way I could get offline without rebooting.

And I also use Renegade's Floating Ruler a lot.

and BrowserTraySwitch.

I was just following links and got to this long post on making chocolate chip cookies:

I call that having a Click Adventure.  :D

Kitchen chemistry is a fascinating subject...especially in regards to cookie baking.  :-*

And the author is absolutely correct when stating you can't substitute different fats (and sugars) without changing the results.

Of course if you experiment a lot like I have, then you learn how things will behave.

And once you know that, you can create your own original cookies from just about anything and know how the cookie will taste and what its texture will be even before you start making it.

If anybody wants to try some experimenting in the kitchen, I have one for you to try...

I put a recipe for 'fake glass' on a blog awhile back, with an idea to build a candy house using only the fake glass...kind of like a gingerbread house without any gingerbread. If anybody wants to play with that, I'd love to see a photo of the results.

Which reminds me...I haven't been typing up all those recipes for awhile...I really need to get back to doing that so I can share them all.

Wow, I am residing with giants here.  All the education and lofty purposes, here I am never graduated high school, nor went to college. It's incredibly nice to see this on a forum, being open and truthful without the usual forum "face" contests that go on.  You've all heard the saying about arguing on the Internet...

One usually doesn't stop learning when their formal education ends. At least that is what I would sincerely hope. I know it is the case for me.

And you are in good company...I didn't graduate high school or go to college, either.

« Last post by app103 on January 11, 2007, 11:28 PM »
It's obsessive, as if I'm thinking, "Well someday when I'm in a nursing home, I'll have something to do and lots of stuff to review and finally get around to reading."

I tend to be that way about downloads. I have a downloads directory that I've tried to organize everything I've downloaded and don't often delete anything from it. As if the programs I save won't be outdated in a couple of months. . . I was even saving each version of Firefox (back to when it was still called Firebird).

Silly me.

That's not actually silly. I am the same way. And when I was stuck using an older pc that couldn't run the latest & greatest software, I was glad I had all those older versions to play around with.

I collect stuff as well, and lots of it. I think my downloads folder is 4-8 gigs (or more? not at home right now). And there isn't any pr0n, MP3s (except for a few odd random ones - but no pirated full albums or the like), gamez or similar in there. At least I only collect virtual stuff, you should see the amount of physical junk my mother collects :)

You guys actually have a downloads folder? I have download drives, each for a specific type of thing.

And I am not just a digital packrat, I am the kind that does it with physical junk too. And I am convinced that it's genetic, since I can't think of one member of my family that isn't a packrat...and I am talking about going back a few generations too.

As far as what I do with my pc, it's well documented in the biography section of my profile.

The author (Paul Lutus) isn't just a programmer (author of the famous Arachnophilia html editor), he's also quite a writer...and not afraid to speak his mind, even when he knows his opinions will be unpopular....on all kinds of topics.

He doesn't post articles & essays very often, but when he does, they are always worth reading. He has a free ebook on the site too...look under Risk/Adventure.

It's about his 4 year solo sailing trip around the world.

I already removed the file attached to the original post, so there will be no more downloads. I am not embarrassed about pulling it or my reasons, so I will leave my post as is.

I am also going to leave the screenshot to make it easier to identify it, if you have already downloaded it and feel like deleting it.

As far as functionality, I am going to leave the page the app loads on my server till 2008, and might add a few more pics to it for those that decide to keep running it, for whatever reason. The brave shouldn't be punished.  :P

Okay, I know you said you don't need words of encouragement ... but . . . we don't want you to get discouraged and stop with your great apps (well, maybe it's okay to rest).  Nobody ever did anything great without making mistakes - and having the courage to admit it yada-yada-yada. :-*

Thank you.

I am not discouraged at all and there is no chance of me stopping programming...not on your life. I can't deny what I am on the inside again, and at heart I am a programmer...something I have been all my life, on the inside. And it will only seem like I am resting for a bit. I actually have a lot of things to work on...things to finish & improve. There will be some work done on older projects that need improving.

This isn't the first disaster I have retracted, just the most public one, being it's on a forum. It is much easier when you are sharing your work over p2p to just remove it from your shared files and not even say anything to anybody unless they ask. It's a little tougher to take it back on a forum.

And I know even Thomas Edison made a lot of darkbulbs before the lightbulb, so this is really no big deal in the world of creating things.

and Farmsteader...

Things like trucks can be replaced...they are only things. You can't replace people. I am glad you are still with us to be able to tell the story, and that nobody else was hurt. I am sure your wonderful boss felt the same way about it, even if he may have initially been angry over the whole thing.
4872
Yeah, well the source to this one belongs here.

The best part of the code wasn't even contributed by me. In an effort to get it done on time I asked a friend to help with the javascript for the page it loads. He tossed out my code and started that page from scratch.

I am thankful to him for it, but even his best code couldn't make up for the mess I made.

I am embarrassed by this project even more than I am embarrassed by someone submitting this project of mine to Softpedia.

I just want to sweep this one under the rug, take the knowledge I have gained from it, and move on.

« Last post by app103 on January 10, 2007, 04:36 AM »
This project may have been called Smile Inducer 2007, but I sincerely doubt it has made anybody really smile...especially me.

I regard it as a coding disaster and I sincerely apologize to the 97 people that have downloaded it.

I would like to kill this project and send it to my recycle bin.

I don't want to feel obligated to support this disaster and make improvements to it till the release of Smile Inducer 2008 (which will never exist)

The project seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality it wasn't.

It's crap. I am sorry.

We all have ideas that turn out like this from time to time, I know this. Encouraging words are not necessary.

I am just trying to find a graceful way to pull it before more people download this garbage that I should never have uploaded.

Site/Forum Features / Re: "Labels" in the PM area... what are they for?
« Last post by app103 on January 10, 2007, 04:07 AM »
The labels are on the messages if you apply them, but the messages will remain in the inbox too, and you won't see anything that hints that you applied any sort of label when viewing from the inbox.

If you delete them from the inbox, they will also be deleted from the labeled area too.

It's not like gmail labels, where you can label them and remove them from the inbox and just file them.

Yes, that is a bit annoying.

Just select the messages from the list at the top of the page by checking the boxes and then clicking the dropdown to apply the labels to all the ones you want in one shot.

If you try to do it from an individual message, it will just refer you to the top list where it will be automatically checked for you and you will be expected to apply the label from there.

Be really careful you don't click that delete button, or the checked messages will end up gone forever. There is no trash section in the personal message area that you can recover deleted messages from.
