I can make it pop up on top of all windows but not activated/focused.  Also, I have a working prototype of this Frog Diary almost ready to go.

This would actually be pretty easy to write in AHK.  Let me see what I can come up with.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Copy Files in Defined Order
« Last post by skwire on November 04, 2009, 11:37 PM »
I am able to add files to listen to before I am finished with the others and it will play it in the order it was copied to the unit.

If this is the case, then the player MUST be keeping track of the order as you add files.  I can easily extend File Bucket to allow you to sort the list you create in the lower pane before you copy the files to your MP3 player.  Will this be acceptable?

Have you tried my File Bucket application?  Website | DC Forum  It might need a tweak or two but it's probably pretty close to what you want.

v1.0.3 build 238 - 2009-11-02
    * Reverted the new "/add" and auto-play changes that were made until I can
come up with a more reliable way to handle this functionality.  Apologies
to those that made use of them.

As you can see from the HUGE jump in build numbers from the last changlog posting (80 builds!), I did try to get it working properly.  Ultimately, it caused more problems with logic and deadlocking bugs than it was worth.  As for now, it goes back on the ToDo; I may revisit this issue in the future.  Soz.   :(

I have sent you some credits..... and thats the first time I have ever paid for software (other than indirectly [OEM windows])
Its a big day for me......
Thanks for the program, I have been/will be busy for a while yet, but I will check it out and let you know what I think....

I'm honoured, thank you.  Let me know if you need anything further from the program.

Likely not the correct place to mention an reproducible error in build 158 (portable version), but here goes anyway.

This would be the right place.   :)

Explanation of my setup:
When I doubleclick on a mp3 file in DOpus v9.x the Trout app starts with only the selected file in the playlist. OK.
Because the file would not autoplay, I enabled 'Resume playback on start' in the options.
Running WinXP pro SP2 (Dutch edition) on a dual core Intel PC

The "Resume playback on start" only works if a track is active at the time you close Trout.

Explanation of procedure:
Double-clicking (and auto-playing) only works the first time. The second time the list is updated correctly, but the song does not start (although the 'Play' button suggests otherwise). Only after pressing the 'Stop' button the intended music starts playing. At this point Trout consumes 49%-50% of my CPU resources. Double-clicking on a new mp3 file results in a 'frozen' Trout which can only be terminated with the TaskManager.

Please update to the build I just uploaded.  I tried to make Trout act like other audio players in that:

  • If you pass a folder or file path to Trout it will clear the list and start playing automatically e.g. c:\path\to\trout.exe c:\music\sometrack.mp3
  • If you pass a folder or file path to Trout with the /add param first, it will simply add to the list without clearing it e.g. c:\path\to\trout.exe /add c:\music\sometrack.mp3

Adding from the shell extension should continue to work as normal.  If ANYBODY has issues regarding these new changes, please speak up and I'll try to satisfy all requests.

So does this have to be a completely new program, or can it be an updated version of an existing program?
In the past, it has been a program you've written that hasn't been released before.

Count me in.

I went with File Bucket as the name.   :(  Sort of like you add files to your "bucket" and then "pour" them out to the destination folder.  Corny, yeah...   :P

One important modification/addition:
The 'Add files in selected folder' button needs a hotkey. Preferably one on the left of the keyboard.
Then instead of CTRL+select, its select, hotkey, select, hotkey...... Which is almost as easy

Which hotkey would you like?  Ctrl+S, perhaps, for "Send"?  Whatever you want...

Also maybe the destination dialog box needs to be able to add new folder? I added one by \New Folder, which is easy enough, so maybe no need.

Doh, my fault.  I will add that in the next build.  Thank you.

Other than that....
And much thanks,
I'll send some credits around to you when I get around to loading some on..... And that will be the first software I have ever paid for.....
Long live Donation Coder, and thanks heaps skwire

You're very welcome.  Happy to help.

  • Drag & Drop hasn't been implemented yet.
  • No right-click menus for anything yet.
  • You can use the following shortcuts to manipulate the files in the bucket:
    • Ctrl-A - Select all
    • Ctrl-D - Deselect all
    • Ctrl-I - Invert selection
    • Ctrl-C - Copy all paths to clipboard
    • Delete - Remove files from list

Give it a run and let me know your thoughts.

We could shorten it...  Take the "F" from File and the "ucket" from Bucket...hmmm....maybe not.   :P

that's where i was heading, but I wondered whether or not it was likely to be an issue, ie if they are actually duplicates then you probably don't want to copy them in (renamed or otherwise)

In my own experience when dealing with music files, I'm positive it will be an issue.  As an aside, I've decided on "File Bucket" as the name.

Fred Nerd - what do you want to do about file collisions (ie duplicates, or different files with the same name)?

I've done what I usually do in cases like this:

filename.ext
filename[1].ext
filename[2].ext
...

Makes my 8000 or so songs on my iPod look small
where did this figure come from?

I think Fred Nerd may have been referring to my screenshots.  I have a fairly large music collection.  ~86,000 tracks.

I seriously thought Skwire would have had this well and truly wrapped up by now, else I might have stepped in sooner (I only started yesterday)

Normally, I would say I would have.  However, I wanted to make the tree navigation very responsive.  In other words, I didn't want to have to scan the user's ENTIRE drive and folder structures before displaying the tree or application itself.  On most people's systems these days, that has the potential to take forever.  I also wanted the icons to look like a normal windows app.  This took a bit of extra research and testing.  It's almost ready for a release.

@Target, please release yours as well.  It's always good to have a choice.

I had asked you on a few occasions to tell me what it would cost, but received no reply to the questions.

I did reply to you regarding the cost.  Simply put, there is no cost associated with the code I write on this site.  The code and applications I write for DonationCoder are free.  I'm not employed by DonationCoder in any capacity.  I write Coding Snacks for fun and practice.  That being said, I reserve the right to not write code as well.

Now you tell me that it is too complex and you have decided to shelve all activity.
The reply is neither good for your business nor fair to a customer.

I don't mean this as rudely as it's going to sound.  I don't have any sort of business, therefore, you are not my customer.  Again, it's not a matter of cost.  It's a matter of time and desire.  I'm gainfully employed elsewhere full-time as a network engineer for a large ISP.  I simply do not have the time or desire to write this full application that you want.

I would ask you please to tell me what you will do for what level of payment and I can reduce the complexity with easier, simpler or more short-cut methods, to save your time and my costs.
So please don't cancel the activity.

Again, I do apologise, but I have no desire to enter into a paying contract in regards to this application you want written.  You may be able to find a programmer willing to take on your project over at RentACoder http://www.rentacoder.com
