New version of Camel Disc Catalog released, most notable change is ability to customize columns in the list view.

I would never use this software because the name offends me.

Which is exactly why I'm obsessed with Powermarks and related bookmark managers like Linkman.  I just want to dump everything in a container and find it almost instantly.  No tagging or organizing.
For the same reason, I too was a big fan of Powermarks and am now an even bigger fan of Linkman.  But that still leaves me with thousands of digital photos on my computer.  I wish I could locate individual photos as easily as I can my  bookmarks in Linkman.  In theory, metadata tags would probably do what I need, but I can't imagine trying to retro-tag thousands of photos.   :(
Yeah, I don't know how professional photographers deal with all their photos.  Especially when they come back with hundreds of photos per session.  I'm sure someone has figured out a way of doing it.  I don't have that many photos, but if I did, I would almost have to use some kind of tagging system that had thumbnails in the cache so I can see a group of pictures very quickly.

but after a while I stopped bothering with all this tagging. Not sure why, but it felt like "too much work"...

It's been a long time coming, but I finally put up my first DC software review.  I implemented some new features for the first time in this article, to make it look more professional, like something you read in a magazine.  Please check it out:
farr3_medium.png

A couple of the cool new features are the following: drop-cap for the first letter of the article, and a pull quote.  No big deal, but it makes the reading look really professional.

Well, no problem copying files of different sizes manually to the c drive.  I just did 5 GB without a problem.  it's crazy, the computer runs perfectly except for game installations.

I have one more game i can try...i should have nba live 07 here somewhere.

nope, that didn't work...unless i should disable it from within windows as well.  I haven't tried that.  I don't think it's that portcls.sys thing because the computer has hung like 10 times in a row now without a blue screen and th event id shows nothing about that portcls.sys.

What I'm going to try now try copying a couple of gigabytes of various sized files from my d drive to my c drive and see if anything happens.  Why it only happens to game isntallations is beyond me.  The only reason i can think of is because game iinstallations are much much bigger than anything else i install.

as 40hz says, try disabling the onboard sound chip from bios, see if that cures the problem.
I did that one a while back, it didn't work.  I'll try again.

Well, here's what's happened so far.  I don't always get a BSOD after the computer hangs, in fact, I get less than half the time.  But if there is a BSOD, there is no STOP code but the portcls.sys file is always there.  I've attached screenshots of the error windows at the bottom.  i don't know what that means.  So I tried some things last night and here's what happened:
--removed one of my sticks of ram.  after that, one of my games installed fine!  I thought that was it and the problem was solved.  But then i tried installing another game, and it hung immediately.  So problem still exists.  Also, just one time, the computer hung when I tried exiting Kaspersky, but I did it again successfully many times.

--I swapped the sticks of ram, didn't help.

--I did a memory test with memtest86+.  I completed 19 passes with no errors.

--If RAM is not the problem, something else is.  i don't know what else to do at this point.

--40hz, those links you mentioned, I think I've also run across them.  The difference with my problem is that the hangs are always happening during the installation.  Once installed, the games work fine.

Armanda, Pierre, what's the status of IQ?  If I'm not mistaken, the calendar module is being worked on?  Anyway, just curious, I've been doing a lot of other stuff, haven't been able to keep up.

Have you checked Gigabyte's website to see if you're running the latest BIOS and chipset firmware? Boards as new as this sometimes have a spate of updates for the first 6 months or so as the kinks get worked out.

You should be able to disable onboard audio under BIOS setup. Try updating your firmware first. See if you get a clean bootup. Then try disabling onboard audio if the problem persists.
Thanks, I'll try that tonight.

General Software Discussion / Help! My new computer is freezing!
« Last post by superboyac on February 06, 2009, 11:07 AM »
Unfortunately, my new computer is freezing whenever I try installing games.  I never usually play games, but since I have a new computer, I thought I'd try out its capabilities.  I've tried two games so far, Half Life 2 and Unreal 3, and they both freeze (hang) during the install process somewhere.  The whole computer is frozen I can't do anything except hit the reset button on my tower.

Most of the time when I restart after the hang, I get a BSOD.  After rebooting again, everything works fine (unless I try installing again).  I've tried everything:  installing from the original CD, installing from a mounted ISO using daemon, and copying the files to the hard drive and installing.  They all freeze during the installation.

I thought maybe it was Kaspersky.  So one time I exited Kaspersky and immediately after the computer froze again, which is weird, because I've exited Kaspersky before without any problems.  Also, I tried exited Kaspersky later and it was fine.  So it doesn't happen every time.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with the games or Kaspersky.  There's some other problem, possibly hardware related.  I'm running XP.

Now about the BSOD, the driver specified on the screen is "portcls.sys"  After doing some research, this file has something to do with audio drivers, possibly the onboard one that comes with the motherboard.  I don't know what to do about it.

Fortunately, you can see all my computer specs here, if it reveals anything.

Go to the Device Manager and check the properties of the internal hub(s) - you should see the maximum load and metering there.

You should have enough power though ... what are actually connecting that isn't self powered?
I'll do that.  I don't think it's a matter of the devices needing power, they're little things like my cell phone and mp3 player.  There's a problem somewhere, I'm just trying to find it.

Living Room / usb power problems
« Last post by superboyac on February 05, 2009, 04:37 PM »
On the new computer, I seem to be having trouble with power to my usb ports.  At first I thought it was the external usb hub I was using (even though it was powered seperately), but then I plugged directly into the usb ports on the motherboards, and I still got messages saying that there wasn't enough power.  How could that be possible?  What can I do to check if all the power is connected properly to my usb ports?

Isn't that the whole point of rebates? They actively want to make it difficult for users to make an effective claim. It is a marketing scam (or at least a near scam) - if they genuinely wanted to benefit customers they could simply give you a sale price on the goods.
Good point.  Oh well, i wasn't relying on them anyway.

Living Room / Annoying rebate time limit policies
« Last post by superboyac on February 04, 2009, 01:03 AM »
I just missed out on at least $60 worth of rebates because their submission time limits are so freaking short.  A lot of them are 20-21 days after purchase date.  So, for online purchases, that includes the shipping time.  So by the time I get all the parts, put the computer together and make sure everything is working, the rebate is over.  Lame.

I changed my theme for the website.  The author, Justin Tadlock, has moved to a more sophisticated framework for his themes and discontinued the old ones.  I like the new one, looks really nice.  I'm trying to tweak it to work right with everything, especially the software list, which is tough.  I'm such a hack with css and php.

I couldn't resist commenting on the last two matches Federer and Nadal have had.  Simply amazing.  One of the most gripping sporting events I can remember.  These two guys are so good for sports in general.
