What a shame - if this is the future Raxco will lose its market share to DiskKeeper.

I think I will drop them an email saying that I have been a customer since version 6 but with 'crapware' I will no longer be a customer.

Anyone who includes a registry cleaner in that format is asking for trouble - and given the corporate nature of their clientelle they'll probably get lawsuits when the working masses get their grubby mits on this sort of ill-conceived tool!

I've given my 2p worth elsewhere but I will say it again - registry cleaners (even the 'best') are fraught with problems and cause many weird and insoluble problems on systems that can appear over months later. They should NEVER EVER be used in automatic mode by anone with a brain - and this makes them pretty useless because even on a clean install of Windows you will have dozens of registry 'errors' flagged because MS has a trick of putting in dummy file names intot he registry for potential addon options (especially with MS Office products) - delete them and the system can screw up in the most unlikely and apparently unrelated ways.

Follow-up ....

Just checked the Raxco website and they are still selling Perfect Disc as a separate product (the good news) so I am still happy. When that choice goes so will I!

The odd news is if you buy their all singing (destroying) suite you don't get boot time defragmentation in the PerfectDisc component - one of the main reasons (IMHO) to use a defragmenter other than the standard one shipped with Windows!!! Strange decision from Raxco.

Have you tired disabling hibernation completely, restart and then re-enable it to see if some of the internal registry settings are screwed up?

But a home user has no need of workflow, lighttables, non destructive RAW editing etc. What I DO need is a way to catalog and organize my photos using published standards, and not have it cluttered with useless junk which make it incapable of handling a decent sized image library.

I disagree on this - lots of home users have cheap digital SLRs these days and shoot RAW photos. If you shoot in RAW then you need a way to edit non-destructively if you are to protect your 'digital negatives'. There are lots of keen amateur photographers out there who need to do things light automate white balance on a series of photos too and then a workflow approach can be very useful and efficient.

Sorry ANYONE who fills in their ATM pin number is a COMPLETE IDIOT without any brains whatsoever.

What is the point of a Pin number that you are contractually obliged to keep private (and not even divulge to your own bank) if idiots fill it in on screen to be posted god knows where?

Having said that I hope the people responsible are caught, hung by their balls while crows peck out their eyes. Bastards.

Hey that is REALLY beautifully done ...

How about incorporating the search box in the DC forum reply/quick reply forms (might make posts more erogenous - got there in three clicks from 'interesting')?

An update (Opus 9.0.0.1) just came out.

Strange - 'Check for updates' doesn't find this - do you have to manually download and install this update?

I have had a few issues with MLin's StartupCPL under WinXP - occasionally I have found that disabling and then restoring an item will lose any command line arguments that were present. The most obvious effect that some apps that started stopped 'auto-hiding' at startup.

Personally I just use MSCONFIG now which is part of all windows versions except Windows 2000 (though you can use the XP version under W2k and there are various links to downloads if you need it). Not sure if it supported under Vista but I'd guess it would be as MS responded to people's frustration when it was left out of W2k.

Here is one article about it http://www.neowin.ne...ct=view&id=33449

(see I wasn't mad!)

  • Sleep mode is broken, it kills your session

Are you sure about this? I will find it most alarming!

Yes it was in the first public beta - to delete things you had to go through various dialogues that tried to persuade you not too. It was ludicrous (and not a bug) but I am sure it is sorted out in the final version (though I don't have it to try).
4785
Odd that deleting a txt file would take so long. It would be pretty hard to believe that they screwed up deleting... I mean, MS would have to be pretty stupid to have it work perfectly since DOS, but somehow muck it up in Vista. I'd say it's more likely that the computer you were on was jacked up somehow. Maybe some stupid crap software the manufacturer forced on you?

There were some very odd things in the beta about deleting files - I seem to remember one complaint was it took about nine mouse clicks to achieve a simple delete. I presume it is fixed in the final version but nothing would surprise me any more!

Best Archive Tool / Re: StuffIt 11 is out...
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 05, 2007, 11:04 AM »
The only people who should use Stuffit are people that need to swap SIT files with a Mac user otherwise it is pretty pointless.

Ihad versions 6,7 and 8 (don;'t know why I kept upgrading!) and none of them worked properly and it has to have the worst GUI ever designed.
4787
That is a really nice layout - clean and quick.

I do think it needs another tier or a longer menu set though as there are just too many apps in each category to wade through.

For example click "Business > Office Suites and Tools" and you get nearly 400 applications listed over 39 pages. It's fine if you know the name you are looking for but for browsing it is a bit hit and miss.
4788
Don't get me wrong, i do appreciate the value of having a stable system with a core line of polished "official" programs, or appreciate that there is a lot of crap out there, or appreciate that osx with its *nix base gives you access to a ton of software.  It's more that i notice how much mac's seem  to be marketed to people who don't want to get involved in installing software, configuring, etc.  to each his own i guess.

Strange though isn't it that Jobs and Co. can't write a versionn of iTunes for the PC that isn't a total bloatfest in all directions - or is that deliberate to make Macs look better?

Another thing I should have mentioned in Vista's favor is the 20-25 minute one-reboot unattended installation. That's nice, too. However, I called Microsoft Support and asked about licensing when I upgrade my CPU chip later this year, and was told I'd need to buy another copy of Vista if I did. I escalated the call to a manager and was told the same thing. That's a real bummer. All that "one device" talk in the EULA is intentionally vague so you get different answers everywhere you google it.

Hmmm ... that is the defining moment for me with with Windows if that is to be future product policy.

Personally I think other major players such as AMD and Intel (not to mention software vendors like Adobe and Corel) should be wading in on this as this policy will seriously impact on their component sales to the enthusiast market and consequently software sales - who is going to buy a new Windows license just to install a $100 CPU ???

Madness.

What about component failure? Bad enough to have a system go down without MS looking for a pound of flesh!

The only place I have seen a clear statement is if you click on the upgrade link on Movie Collector homepage.

Given that the link wasn't there before this upgrade I can't see how there was any clear statement.

There was no comment at all in the original purchase emails on upgrade policy and according to the forum they thought it was stated in their license agreement. Well as you can see it wasn't mentioned in the December download and I have just checked the new version license and it isn't there either.

Personally I think they should draw a line under it and say all new purchases from NOW will be subject to the new policy clearly on the website and support previous users according to the de facto understanding.

It would even be a little more sensible to hold their hands up and make a statement of the new policy by email to all registered users and if they want to explain the old policy is not financially practical in the long term and the new policy will apply to everyone, but previous purchasers will get the next major upgrade free as partial compensation.

I posted to their forum too and got this response ...

CarolHaynes,
I bought 3 apps (Books, Music and Movies) last December and as far as I understood it upgrades were free - it even still says so on some pages of the website

I apologize if the site gave that impression; we intended the policy to be clear. It is also mentioned in the license agreement.
You are right that we did not consider older reviews/testimonials in this regard, maybe we should have added some kind of note about this.

Well that's a potential future customer lost - I hate it when people do this. How many people actually read (or understand) license agreement small print.

Actually I have just run the installer again that I downloaded in december and it make absolutely no reference whatsoever to upgrades (paid or free) ... here is it:

By the way I haven't updated since that version - does anyone have a copy of the latest installer (pre the current upgrade) as only the new version is available for download on the website!

Should have looked before I shouted - see the forum column here:

http://www.collector...viewtopic.php?t=8645

However the cutoff date is November 14th 2006

Doesn't really answer the question for me as I bought mine in December (just checked my receipts again) and the website still has references to free upgrades!

Upgrades are 50% of the full cost (ie. pretty much the same as the DC discount price and you can't apply a further discount to the upgrade price).

Also not a happy bunny ...

Also notice the references to "free upgrades" (just search the page for "upgrade") on:

http://www.collectorz.com/reviews.php

and

http://www.collector...com/useropinions.php

both of which are pages published to advertise their products and policies.

My letter to their support address:

I just received your email regarding upgrading to Movie Collector 5.

When I originally purchased Book, Movie and Music Collector applications last November your website said that upgrades were free to registered users.

In fact your own webpages still refer to free life time upgrades. See both:

http://www.collectorz.com/reviews.php

and

http://www.collector...com/useropinions.php

both of which have references to lifetime free upgrades.

Can you please explain what is going on as I only bought these apps in November and feel a little bit miffed that 'lifetime' appears to be less than 6 months!!!!

If you want to change your policy for new purchasers that is your prerogative but for customers who bought on the understanding that upgrades would be free not honouring that commitment will cause some mistrust and ill-feeling.

Thanks.

I'll post if/when I get a reply.

Post New Requests Here / Re: A better DU Meter
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 01, 2007, 02:40 AM »
I asked a similar question recently and was pointed at http://www.wireshark.org/download.html which helped me track down which app was constantly chattering. It is a really useful app showing you what is going on with your internet connection and it is free!

I used to use DU meter (just to monitor how much bandwidth I was consuming each month) but I do think that apps like that should be light touch on your system (which DUMeter seems to be). The trouble is the task you suggest really is not trivial - it is hard to track down what is happening at times because applications make use of other processes like SVCHOST.EXE, which is part of windows, and it isn't that easy to find out which app is responsible as there are often multiple copies of these other processes in use simultaneously.

They are releasing all of the EMI catalogue in MP3 format and have just got the go ahead to release the Beatle's catalogue for the first time. I would guess/hope that other labels are likely to follow suit.
