Living Room / Re: How to obtain nearly complete anonymity while online
« Last post by Deozaan on January 03, 2012, 11:37 AM »
Also note, some BitTorrent software, (eg. µTorrent), will allow you to use just the IP filter lists without having to run a separate filtering program.  The filter list can be updated by using IPFilterUpdater.

Is there a way to know if the IP filter is being used? I ran the IPFilterUpdater installer thingy and it extracted a bunch of files and then closed.

It would have installed the batch file with a link on your Start Menu called David Moore->IPFilterUpdater

When you run it, it'll connect to SourceForge for a list of mirrors and then you can choose one from the dropdown list and hit GO!

Interesting. It didn't create a desktop shortcut nor did it make any links in the Start Menu. Maybe I need to re-run it as administrator to give it permission to make those links.

Thanks for the help.

But how do I know it's working? I do have IP Filtering enabled in uTorrent. Is that all I needed? How can I be sure?

Game crashed/froze when I moved the guy in the top left corner of the 'light side' board. Also, just a thought, maybe an arrow or something to signify who's turn it is?

Great seeing this in a release!

It sounds like you didn't end your turn by pressing T after moving the special unit. If that's not the case then please send me your console.log so I can look for errors. Thanks.

You're right. I need to add some sort of indication of which team's turn it is. I'll add it to my to-do list.

Thanks for playing.

how many games did you have to play before you got a score of 88?

I got 82 or so on my first game. But I didn't think to take a screenshot so I can't prove it. :( I was just really lucky though because I didn't fully understand the rules that first time I played.

I embedded the YouTube Screencast into the original topic and also added this important part about combat that I neglected to mention:

It should also be noted that units benefit from being on the same colored squares and are weakened when standing on opposite colored squares. So a light knight standing on a light square will do more damage and take less damage than a light knight standing on a dark square.

Happy 2012 everyone!

I just downloaded the currently uploaded file and it unzipped and ran fine here.

I created the archive with 7-Zip 9.20 and that's what I'm using to unzip it.

I just created a new archive using a different (worse) compression method which I've just uploaded.

I'm still working on it. It's not quite ready for release. In fact, the latest changes I've made to it make it less playable than the previously released early alpha version while I transition from the unstructured free-for-all gameplay to implementing combat and enforcing turns.

I haven't followed any of the links in this thread so far, but I do want to say that I used to work for a medical device manufacturer (our site made defibrillators and ECG monitors) and I do want to say a few things:

  - I can understand that patients might like to have the firmware source made available
  - keep in mind that there are in fact trade secrets used in the firmware that could be damaging to the manufacturer if made easily available to competitors
  - the outfit that I worked for took safety *very seriously*.  I have no qualms saying that safety was the primary concern. Reliability was held to a high standard as well.
  - while the FDA didn't directly inspect the code (as far as I know - I imagine that they could request it, and maybe even did), they did hold testing to a high standards. And the FDA could and would perform intensive audits - unannounced - that sometimes took more than a month to complete.

Karen, the woman who gave the talk, says she offered to sign NDAs. She just wanted to learn as much as possible about the technology she relied on to save her life if she should go into "sudden death."

Closed source doesn't necessarily mean it is bad or buggy. But due to it's nature, nobody can really say for sure whether it is or not.

And be thankful that nobody gave you a bipod or a tripod, because then you'd be a terrorist: http://rt.com/news/t...ards-government-613/ :P

While I tend to agree with the general sentiment of that article, it does blow things out of proportion. The article (and you) makes it sound like if you buy a single tripod you're likely to be a terrorist. But the pamphlet actually released by the FBI or whoever says that buying the things listed in bulk is suspicious.

The only thing on the list I can see somebody needing in bulk would be MREs for an emergency preparedness food storage.

I like this one though:

Possess limited knowledge of intended purchase items

So basically any time my mom buys electronics she could be a terrorist. :D

Does this mean they predicted that nobody would donate to DC in 2012? :'( Is that why the calendar ends that year?

Following a chain of links, I found someone else posted their unpleasant experience with this guy earlier this year. A small excerpt:

Buddy your asking for free stuff and I am trying to help you , You have no idea what happened to our ordering system or our old customer service reps that told you they were going to send you a 100% COUPON AND FREE CONTROLLER  but never did . So calm yourself down , be respectful and do as I say or ask to get your free controller. I DEAD SERIOUS ! Be a little more humble we can refuse the right to ship out anything to anyone we want , I’m trying to help you. Small claims court for 49 dollars haha … that’s cute . I’m the President of my company not The Avengers so keep  your punk smite  ignorant comments to yourself. If I wasn’t trying to help you I wouldn’t have emailed you back. Customer service of old is gone were in a new generation now. Sorry for any inconvenience , this will ship tomorrow I’m putting in the order now .

This is a really interesting ~15 minute audio clip from Open Source Conference.

Some time ago, Karen Sandler was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a medical condition in which the heart muscle thickens, greatly increasing the chances of sudden death. A defibrillator implant was recommended. Of rightful curiosity, Karen asked what software ran the implant, and if she could have a look at its source code before entrusting her life to a gamble on its quality. After many a confused look, much finger pointing and buck passing, the buck landed back on her, and the cat was let out of the bag.

Read/listen to the rest of the story here.

The guy acted like a jerk, we can all probably agree on that. But I don't like the idea of mob rule. I don't have much sympathy for him and his business, but I truly hope he was lying when he said his wife and kid(s) are being harassed as well.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 is now live
« Last post by Deozaan on December 21, 2011, 02:19 AM »
You left out the important details (emphasis added):

Hey guys, we’ve noticed that a number of un-humble users are buying lots of Humble Indie Bundle 4’s for one penny, and then using their Steam codes to “legitimize” automated Steam accounts in order to increase their odds of winning prizes in Valve’s current raffle promotion. This is unfair to legitimate entrants and is definitely not what we wanted to encourage with Humble Indie Bundle 4. It’s a lose-lose situation for the indie developers, charities, Valve, and Humble Bundle.

Therefore, starting immediately, new orders under a humble threshold of $1 will not contain Steam keys.

If you can’t afford a dollar but still need a Steam key and promise not to resell it or otherwise abuse it, please contact our support team with your humble appeal and we’ll purchase a new bundle for you on a case by case basis.

I think that fits the same spirit you'll find here at DC.

It looks cool but I'm also a skeptic. I think that for it to learn what you want it to do, you'd need to have a fairly rigid/regular schedule of when you heat or cool your house. But if you already have a regular schedule of when you heat or cool your house you could just buy a cheaper programmable thermostat and enter your schedule into it and be done with it, then put that saved $200 toward a nifty video camera you have no need for. ;) :P
