General Software Discussion / Re: Renamers, Picture Viewers, etc., 1999 before 2
« Last post by Curt on September 15, 2009, 03:31 AM »
As for my bad-mouthing of XnView's picture quality:

Doesn't setting better quality help?

Tools -> Options -> General -> Read
Tools -> Options -> View -> High quality zoom
Tools -> Options -> -> View -> Fullscreen -> Use delayed high quality...
-fenixproductions (November 10, 2008, 05:08 PM)

- I must admit that I already have forgotten what change I made, but I do remember clicking a box - and now XnView is just as good as the other viewers. Sorry, XnView, and Thank You, fenixproductions!

No, I stand firm by my first impression: the picture quality from XnView is inferior to IrfanView and many others!  :down:

The reason I have kept it is that I want an easy solution to see my pictures in different orders, by name, by last change, etcetera, and it is faster just to use another viewer than to click "change order" and wait for the sorting of 8.000 pictures.

Once again I will look for a replacement of XnView.

VideoCacherView is not very good with Firefox unless you know where to manually find the cache folder. At least it didn't work in my setup.

Edited: Oh, now I see; Mozilla Archive Format
Can the file be read by another Firefox without MAF, or is it that all Firefoxes have MAF?

General Software Discussion / Re: Organize desktop icons and more...
« Last post by Curt on September 13, 2009, 08:34 AM »
What does it mean to 'organize' the desktop icons? How many are there? I have organized mine by hiding all of them! A couple of years ago I didn't have as many icons as I have today, so back then I was using ($20) http://www.idesksoft.com/ , with great pleasure :-) But you may be thinking about a more 'practical' order?

not for Firefox which patteo is using ;-)

what is this   you have lured me into installing?  it is  T E R R I B L E !

I am now re-installing 3.0, and removing Mr Tech.

Edited: Okay, I don't have to remove Mr Tech.
Something went terrible wrong with FF 3.5, but I don't know why.
4758
Regarding the subject of the thread, extensions for FF 3.5: I did update my Firefox 3.0 when the "final" 3.5.3 was launched, but removed it again and went back to 3.0, because too many extensions were broken. Far too many! Yes, 3.5 is notable faster, but other than that, all I could think of was how I was missing this and that feature.

For a couple of years I have preferred Franklin Gothic medium, for writing in PageFour
- but I have not yet printed it, so I don't really know what it will look like on paper!

Everything else just follows whatever may be the default setting.

Launchy ...
... if I right click on the link, I don't get any graphics viewers in the list.  Just video players.

Both these links (to one and the same picture #Edited: one to the actual photo, and the other to the page containing the (link to the) photo#) should make Launchy suggest XnView etcetera,: http://farm3.static....440_c13bc94a1a_o.jpg
, and: http://www.flickr.co.../3884282440/sizes/o/

At least it will in my setup (FF 3.0). But of course, I only installed Launchy today, so I don't know yet if it will loose its wits when I install something new. Will Launchy get "repaired" if you re-install it?

- hmm... I will have to think more thoroughly about this. Thanks for explaining!

It just feels so silly to have a bunch of clipboards but 90+ percent, maybe even 99 % of the time not use any of them for more than the Windows clipboard can do.

@Curt:

Most of the clipboard enhancers have a feature to automatically delete messages by number and/or by age.  You only have to set that up once.  Some can be set to ignore clips coming from certain programs, which is great for ignoring clips from e.g. password keepers.

Thanks, rjbull. What I really want is one more hotkey, for copying. So if I press the normal set of hotkeys, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, it will make a normal Copy&Paste&Forget, but if I copy by pressing the other hotkey, it will Copy&RememberForEver. Maybe they all can do this already, but as I implied, I don't tend to figure out what is not obviously.

@Curt:
You forgot ArsClip, CHS, CLCL, ClipCache and MiniCLIP :)

I did test ArsClip some years ago, but of course skipped it again because of the lack of genuine Unicode support. Now I see that joejoe the jackass finally implemented Unicode, so I might try it again. Thanks for reminding me!

I am not too sure about the other names, besides ClipCache of course - CLCL has not even been updated for Vista.

I think history proves it extremely difficult for code authors to understand how my clipboard should work! More than 90 percent of all my clips are "copy and paste and forever forget", in order to rename picture and audio files. I really don't care if a clipboard is able to save this and 499 other clips, for aeons.

But of course, history also proves that I really don't have the brains or take the time to learn how use the various clipboards that I already own licenses for.... Why can't these authors just write it the way I want it, the first time, so I don't have to purchase yet another clipboard?

Just bumping; it is TODAY!

I've "always" thought that the normal asking price for Bolide Image Comparer, $35, was a little too high, but this one-day-offer, coming up Wednesday, should make the price just right. $23 at Bits du Jour / Daily-Deals. I already bought it for $35, and I am satisfied with the program.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Customizable Unicode character paster
« Last post by Curt on August 17, 2009, 07:11 AM »
I should tell that I wrote the author of Diacrit yesterday, and he immediately updated his program and added a decimal and hexadecimal tooltip to each button!

Diacrit is £10 (approx US$19 or €13)
http://www.diacrit.sandrila.co.uk/

- Today I know, I should have asked him some more questions! As an example: Yesterday I wrote him this:

More and more often I choose not to use Diacrit. Please add a >favourite chars< that I can design myself, so the chars that I actually use are placed together and not divided between five or six "languages".
-Curt to Diacrit's author

Today I received this answer, which I gladly would have received a couple of years ago!!:

Hi Curt, that is very easy to do already, just edit the file diacrit.ini
Make up a name for the language, to make it the first language in the list insert it before Albanian in the line 'Languages1' like (I'll call the language Curt)

Languages1=Curt,Albanian,ArabicLetters, ...

Then before the line Albanian insert a new line like

Curt="Times New Roman",20,4,nnn,nnn,nnn,nnn

where 20 is the font size on the buttons,
4 is the number of buttons across
and nnn or $nnnn is the decimal or hexadecimal unicode value

I hope that helps, please ask if you need any more assistance.

I would of course like the program to also tell when a program was removed.
So far I have written NirSofer and suggested the hole "IDEA:" as a new utility.

this thread may be moved to "unanswered requests"... or...

I think the application I want should be placed in Start. At every start it must scan the computer  and write the names on all applications found. It should not be able to delete, only to write & overwrite, to a single text file. That should be all.

- this was of course not the right procedure.

But I still would like an app to remember former installed programs.
Ashampoo and Total Uninstall are both miles over the target.
