General Software Discussion / Re: What's your music player of choice?

[cue maniacal laughter][rant]So... does iTunes still install about 15 services that HAVE to run in order for it to work? The lack of any sort of provision for end-user input into what runs with the program had me screaming like a madman until I finally decided to cut my losses and uninstall it for good. I do not own an iPod and thus don't need to have a service running to enable iTunes to communicate with an iPod. Likewise, I don't need iTunes plugins loading into Outlook when I open it... and so on! Just curious if version 8.x addressed these long-standing beefs. My experience going from 4.x to 5.x to 6.x to 7.x was that rather than addressing users' concerns with each new release Apple ADDED MORE crap that runs with iTunes (and which must be running if you want iTunes to function).[/cue maniacal laughter][/rant]

I didn't even read past the end of the first line.

Yea, it still requires to dig into your system like a virus, and it STILL doesn't uninstall correctly on Windows-based computers (Interesting how Apple Software Update re-installs itself and asks to install more crap... ;))

Without reading, I am obligated to agree on all points :P

I used D2D to purchase GTA: San Andreas (AO version, say what you want :P) and I loved how it was so simple to just run and enter the code. And I used a no-CD crack keep it from doing anything else unexpected afterwards (phoning home or something).

Cheap, fast, easy.

And CS:S is not free, but I do have modified copies. *Cough*

(But it is only like $20 on Steam)

Who says that Trackmania <> Visual Basic .NET? ;D ;D ;D

My b-day is coming up in a month, and I'm looking to actually get a new laptop - a crappy one, but nonetheless, a new one for me. Something non-Windows... an old iBook or an EEE, if I can find one cheap enough. I can't afford a Vista laptop, and XP + Vista Transformation (I am doing that now) is working out fine :)

Anyone got opinions on either of the above (older Mac laptops (for experimenting only, nothing major) and/or eeePCs? Or anything running gOS)?
480
I might zip them, I am in the process of organizing them in categories. Problem is, I am always adding more ;D

Let me see if I can get my collection synchronized and organized, and I'll see about posting 'em up here :)

(Bump this topic if I don't post in a day or so, I forget easily :P)
481
Ah, I went to the website but must have misread. :-[ $30 per computer isn't cheap with 5 computers, I'll have to see how the trial goes :)
482
Just wondering, as I couldn't find it on the site - a license covers as many computers as you have under your roof, but how much does a license cost (USD)? I have a subscription to PC Tools Internet Security that runs out in a few months, and this looks like a nice, powerful application to take its place...

It allows control of power usage, throttling of CPU voltage and multiplier, hard drive speed (for power and noise), ACPI control (extremely handy - it let me know my laptop's CPU hit 205.15F (thats like... 80C?) and told me it would shutdown in 15 seconds to keep damage from occurring.

It gives you graphs for CPU usage, CPU temp, HDD temp, battery level, battery charge level (as in how much power is being used/added to the battery), etc etc.

It does much more than what Windows (or Ubuntu) does already.
484
I use Notebook Hardware Control on my laptop for this purpose, and it works well. A simple right click of the tray icon (any of the 1-6 or so that it can show, via settings) gives you quick access to your settings for Max Performance, Batery Optimized, Max Battery, and other options. Great tool, but it looks like the support/development has stopped for it - nonetheless, it gives such a host of options that I plan on using it until it is no longer compatible with my version of Windows (my laptop is going to hold with me for the long haul, Vista upgrade soon :)).

Works with 2k-Vista I believe (tested on XP SP2, XP SP3, Vista, Vista SP1 personally, on desktops and laptops). It runs with all settings enabled on laptops (unless you have some weird hardware), and with some options enabled for desktops. Useful for both types of systems (tablets too I assume, but untested personally).

HINT: 1 and ! are the same key, and one and eleven (and one hundred and one, and so on) are all the same. Ignorance is bliss, and bliss is always positive.

If I am on Windows, I only use WMP (11). The sole reason: it starts up in a flash. Most of the time (90%) I just open my Music folder and use that as what most people use their playlist viewer in their music player for: play this song, now play this song. It doesn't force me to keep the player open if I want to stop listening to music for a short while, and it doesn't use any more resources than explorer does already.

BUT, if I am on Ubuntu (most of the time now at school), Songbird gets the vote. I used to like Amarok, but it has an odd UI - and I have been watching Songbird since EARLY releases, and it is a mature and stable beta program now (0.7, I started watching it at 0.3).

@Curt: ;D

EDIT: And because I get most of my music from Jamglue, I have to write my own ID3 tags. Do that for over 100 songs manually (I have 105 total, 4 from iTunes (DRM stripped) :o), and you get to know your music a lot better than you would have ever wanted to.
487
Oh yea! Everyone dance! :P

I have finally found a method of doing automatic/manual updates, without using DcUpdater OR Visual Studio's crappy (current) updating system. No additional software required, less overhead than the current system, and this one can be triggered automatically or manually, and based off options. :D :D :D

It will be done later tonight (my time, 11PM right now, that is hour 23 for those of you outside the US), however I won't upload it for a day or so. That'll give me time to make sure it works and doesn't randomly screw up :P

If it all works out, all my programs should utilize this updating system. It requires me to use the FTP client again, but it will be faster than what I am doing now, so that is still an improvement (once again).

Images soon (might upload them to this post if I get them done in the next hour or so)

Mouser's Zone / Re: New Portable Mode for My Apps
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 04, 2008, 10:59 PM »
Just wondering, can you come up with some type of system similar to what PortableApps.com has? I use their suite + every program they have (literally) on my 1GB flash drive (its a cram).

Personal preference, but I find the system logical and the GUI management for it just perfect.

IMO it looks like a multi-platform spin off Xfire... trying to take on LIVE, Xfire, PSHome and Steam in one. That's a bit of a load!

IMO Source is much better than 1.6. Graphics, AI, and gameplay have all gotten a boost.

I can upload my CS:S installer if you send me an IM on Xfire (or a PM, that works too) :)

NoScript isn't bad, nor hard to configure - I just go around browsing and when a site whines about having Javascript or Flash or something off or not installed, I just tick it on and away it goes (with a refresh, of course).

That's just my method, but you can't get much easier than that. A month of browsing and all your normal sites will be setup.

I personally have all the above, except I use DMZ for gaming (server host) needs, and my computer hasn't seen a bit of malicious software yet (almost 18 months old).

Make sure other users on the computer (if any) are locked down... I left my sister and her friend on my laptop alone (her user account, admin) for a couple hours a week ago, and had to reinstall Firefox, CS:S, and a couple other things afterward. Strangely, only some files were missing, and they weren't uninstalled.

Back on topic (and back to sanity :P), I am attempting to incorporate the tabs of MiniBrowse into other apps, like Notes. This makes the Notes UI appear similar to Notepad++, and I am using it as a somewhat of a guide - it is a great little program. Notes, however, is just a recreation of Notepad, but with less options and a few more features.

MiniBrowse is on pause, and XtremeDraw... *curses under breath* has been lost on my now-dead hard drive (a friend of mine has agreed to attempt a recovery, but...). My backup solution failed, as I was undergoing a refresh of my project handing setup at the time, and none of my computers have it. This bites.

But at least I'm getting something done. Images soon. :)

Yea, but still, I would IMMENSELY enjoy (being very basic on word choice, I would need a thesaurus to fully express my imaginative energy explosion about this) playing some Crysis or COD4 during class... TrackMania, Halo, CS:S (that apparently is "not school appropriate"... :-\ ;D), The Sims 2 and Sauerbraten get old after a bit. And 1.6GHz Celeron M and Radeon 9600 Mobility 64MB (AGP) don't cut it much anymore.

*Goes off to install Need for Speed Most Wanted*

Circle Dock / Re: 3 Questions about Circle Dock
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on October 01, 2008, 09:36 PM »
Nice transform pack, I used that one myself before on my XP laptop. And that dock image screams Cairo.

Anyways, it would appear that your options are set to now have icons in separate circles, but as one large circle. If I remember correctly, the spiral has been temporarily removed due to tech difficulties. And the Start Menu Shadow Residual bug can only be fixed by updating to the newest Circle Dock, or by turning off shadows.

(Note that I am just a fellow user of CD, and I am not completely up to date. Just trying to be of some help, VideoInPicture (CD's creator) should swing by soon and see what the deal is )
