I was just citing and example - and a bad one at that (which I pointed out).

As for the memory, I did not realize there was that much difference between flash dram and other dram memory modules.

To SB - For today only at Newegg -

  • Patriot Logo
  • Patriot Xporter XT 16GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PEF16GUSB
  • Your Price: $38.99
  • $23.99 After $15.00 MIR

This is the same one you originally was looking at except in a 16GB size.  Don't know if you are still interested in it, but I thought I would tell you...
Thanks, but I already bought the Pico.  It's ok, though, 16 GB is overkill for me right now.  I'm just trying this out for now.  If it becomes serious, I'll get a larger one later.

Well, there's this program:

But, it's a little TOO simple.  Good grief.

Maybe this is one of the "huge" applications you spoke of, but doesn't Sony's Acid Music do what you are looking for?  I believe it was/is free, but even if not, it is not that expensive.
I've heard of it, but never looked into it.  Yes, that would probably be one of the huge applications.  Still, it's worth a look.  Definitely not free though!

some programs like Launchbar commander will autodetect the drive change.
most programs (launchbar commander included, and farr), will let you specify relative paths, or paths using a special variable like %APPDRIVE% or %APPDIR%.
I see, so it's not like something built into windows OS.  I almost was thinking that the OS somehow miraculously adjusts shortcuts automatically.

Would it be possible to create an audio player where a sample loop file can be loaded and just played back in a loop?  The important key is to repeat the loop without any gaps in the beginning or end, because technically, the loop file is made such that it is exactly the right length to be looped on the beat.  This won't work on a regular jukebox player.  But the real looping programs are huge audio applications meant for much more.

One thing I need help understanding:  How do all these portable applications deal with the the different drive letters as the USB is plugged into different computers?
For example, in FARR, LBC, XYPlorer, there are places to define shortcuts to files.  But I'm setting them up on one computer with drive letter "D" for the USB.  But what happens when I put the stick in another computer and the drive is now "F"?  Do all these shortcuts and settings automatically change to "F"?  How?

just copy the .ini configuration files from your existing installations to the usb drive.

afterwords you can edit the settings from within the program to change any drive letters, OR you could open the .ini files in a text editor and look for drive letters to change manually.
Excellent!  Thank you, that's what I kind of thought, I just wanted to make sure.

mouser, i've extracted the files as you said to my usb.  now, how can I copy all my configurations from your various programs and transfer them to usb?  From there, i will tweak it for portable use.  i just don't want to start out from scratch completely.

No great loss in my opinion, and not worth the wait currently. I mean how fast do you need, currently the average system will not give you the complete I/O capability of your flash as it is, maybe when the new standard comes out these drives today, will be a bit more impressive tomorrow!?!!
Yeah, that's how I feel.  i'm talking $25 right now.  Who cares?!  I'll spend another $25 when USB 3.0 comes out.  big deal.

depends where you need to refer to a relative path..
but for example in FARR, you can use:
%APPDRIVE%
%FARRDIR%

other programs (screenshot captor, launchbar commander, etc.) are similar.

launchbar commander will actual try to fixup drive letter if it changes.
OK thanks.  Looks like I'll have to fiddle around with the setup.  Ugh...I'm so busy...let me give a big thanks for this stuff working great right out the box so far.  I haven't had time lately to go into software and check out all the options...I miss it.

If I understand correctly, to install on a USB drive, I just run your installer and specify the USB drive path for the install.  Wouldn't it be better to just be able to unzip to the USB drive manually?

No. You do NOT have to run the installer.

The installers I create are actually "zip-compatible-exes", which means you can unzip them exactly as if they were .zip files, and then just run the programs from the unzipped location.
I see.  i never knew you could do that.  Thanks.

mouser, a comment on your portable feature.

If I understand correctly, to install on a USB drive, I just run your installer and specify the USB drive path for the install.  Wouldn't it be better to just be able to unzip to the USB drive manually?  The reason is that I don't want a computer that already has your software locally installed to get confused on which installation is the current one.  For example, I have FARR installed locally, but I want it on the USB drive.  If i run the installer, now the Windows Add/Remove program will think I'm updating the current install or add a new (duplicate entry).  And then what happens to my local start menu?  Does it get confused?  Am I thinking of this correctly?  I'm having the same questions with Linkman Pro.  I just think portables work better as zips, no install...just for this situation.
4665
Although it would be better if FARR and LBC works from the USB...which i think it does.

all of my programs (except url snooper which needs the winpcap drivers installed) can be run portably.
Well...what can I say?  Awesome!  I will have to make a portable launchbar with LBC.  How do I define shortcuts with relative paths?  because my USB drive will be different letters on different computers.
4666
If someone wants to provide a menu application that is fine but however an installer does not make life easier. I think that the best way would be a menu builder that scans the pointed drive for exe, bat, jar etc then it creates the menu based on those apps on a drive or in folders.

Check out Pegtop PStart. It does that and works very well in general.
i've been meaning to try that.  It looks cool.  Although it would be better if FARR and LBC works from the USB...which i think it does.

Looks like you've already ordered, but I need to report my negative experience with the supertalent pico. Mine is too big for most USB sockets. It requires lots of force to push it in, and sometimes pliers to pull it back out. I broke the chain trying to remove it from a computer at church. After using it in a port for a while, the port bends to fit it more easily, but then other devices experience intermittent connections on that port. I wound up buying a 2" USB M - USB F adapter that I keep it in, removing the size advantage completely.

Eric
Interesting...I did read that it was a tight fit.

Ehtyar, thanks for the explanation.  That cleared things up for me.  So it sounds like i would probably use a combination of my regular portable programs, and for ones that aren't portable, hopefully they are on portableApp...like Firefox.

Yeah, that testfreaks website is where I'm getting all my information.  Good site.

Ok, seems like I've narrowed it down to the Kingston HyperX and Super Talent Pico.  both are capless, but the Pico is very very small.  I like that, wouldn't notice it on my keychain.  Come to think of it, newegg has a 2-for-1 special on them right now.  I think I'm getting the Pico-C gold:

For all that PAP, and Fast operating Linux Distro too!?!!
I didn't understand anything you said...

I don't quite understand the purpose of something like PortableApps, so maybe we can discuss that here.
I want to setup a USB stick to carry a bunch of programs around with me for convenience.  Now, a lot of programs these days come with portable installations.  So, that means I can just run it fine off the stick.  In that case, what's the point of something like PortableApps?  Is it just a tool to launch these things?  Because if that's the case, I'd rather use something like portable FARR or another program like that.

Also, there's been a lot of talk lately of portable file associations in programs like Total Commander and XYplorer.  I can also see myself using the file manager as my portable OS.  meaning, I insert the stick in the computer, then I open the file manager, and using the portable file associations configured there, i run things off my stick as if the file manager was the central OS.

Essentially, i want to create a situation where once I stick my stick in, the computer I'm using is centered around whatever I have on the stick, not on the original computer.

How about a 4GB Kingston Datatraveler HyperX?  Only about $25 (vs. $45 for the PNY).  Capless design.  Supposed to be pretty fast.
