Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of Fineprint (Virtual Printer)
« Last post by cranioscopical on December 29, 2006, 09:19 PM »
Virtual printers for the same printer, but with different settings.  I want a Printer named "LaserJet - 2 up" and another simply named "LaserJet" that does 1 up printing.  That way I don't have to go into Printer Properties all the time; I just need to select the virtual printer that does what I want.  Again - why can't I do this in Windows natively???
You may mean something different but, have you tried this which works nicely for home use...?
Say you have a printer now, called HPLP711.  In your printers folder use the 'add printer' icon. Choose the printer type that you want to add (HPLP711) and, at the end of the process, you'll have a duplicate of HPLP711, probably named HPLP711 (2).  Go into the Printer Properties of this new 'printer' and set whatever you want.  Save, and then rename the new 'printer' with something useful,  e.g. "HPLaser-2UP".  Now "HPLaser-2UP" will appear as a choice in whatever print requester your software displays at print time.
I have 4 such 'printers' based on one physical printer and select what I want depending on the appropriate parameter at print time, such as paper quality, scaling...whatever.
Of course, you need access to relevant drivers and that's probably a problem in a corporate setting, depending on who sets what policies etc.

I'm just one of many, many members here, and DonationCoder is a valuable resource for me. That said, may I offer a personal comment about this thread?
It seems to me that this kind of (theoretical) discussion could reflect badly on DonationCoder. So, with respect, I ask if DonationCoder is an appropriate forum for this topic and hope that you will not take offense when I suggest that the conversation would be better conducted elsewhere.

Good on you for your honesty. Nowadays, too many are willing to debase their personal integrity for a handful of dollars!

Carol:I haven't noticed any fading when I user "Canon Photo Paper Pro".
I have a Canon EOS 300D...  I have just started using an IXUS i7 for convenience
Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate the feedback. It's good to hear about what hardware others use and like.
When I first bought a digital camera I found its relatively small size liberating after using a lifetime collection of 35mm equipment. Then I began wanting more flexibility, so I bought another camera, larger and more versatile and--presto--I was back to lugging around too much stuff :)
I'm interested in your reference to the IXUS i7. It's certainly small enough, and the radio remote appeals to me; I had a similar thing on my main 35mm and it was great for catching the local wildlife.
I guess this is getting well away from the topic of Fineprint so we should desist. Thanks again for the answers!

Carol:My Canon ip5000 has a cartidge tray feed but it also also a straight through feed - it is great to have the choice. Plus it includes automatic duplex, automatic 4-up booklet printing (which is really neat), mulitple page reduction to a single sheet and CD/DVD printing and produces really great photos. Add to that PictBridge (no computer) printing from cameras, auto on/off and self-cleaning and I can't think of much that is missing.
Sounds good to me. What's the print life like? Do you notice fading of material that's under glass? Do you use a Canon camera? (My H-P 2420 is a laser, which I need for when I want to generate a high-quality 100+ page report in a hurry.)

Carol: Personally I have moved to Canon printers which are excellent. OK their ink is still expensive but not nearly as ridiculous as Lexmark and some other manufacturers (partly because they don't see you a print head with every cartridge, plus you can replace individual colours).
I agree about Canon. I'd been using Epson Pro printers for colour (still do for some stuff). One day my sheet-feed scanner died and I needed a replacement in a big hurry. I live in a rural area, so there's not a lot of choice locally and I wound up with a Canon all-in-one. I've never been a fan of all-in-one machines, but the Canon's printing has been excellent and much more cost effective than that of the Epson machines. Canon's fade-resistance rating isn't good, so I use Epson for anything I think might be around for a few years.
mrainey:I bought a Samsung laser on sale for fifty bucks
One of the 2010's? Aren't they a great buy!? For text that matters I use an H-P 2420 because it's one of the few machines with the option of a straight-through paper path, but I bought a Samsung 2010 for my wife for a tenth of the cost and it's just great... nice small footprint, too.

patteo: I guess it is no different from why the printer manufacturers literally sell their snazzy looking printers dirt cheap which are gas ink guzzlers
Printer manufacturers have me hooked.
I know it's cheaper to do the following than to buy replacement ink:
buy a low-end printer on special, use it until the ink runs out, then toss it and buy another.
I just can't make myself do that. It's bad for the planet and it just plain offends my sense of what is right and wrong.

mimiihu: cranioscopical, i think this is still not it but it has a lot of features. maybe you can find some useful. it's shareware, tho.

i couldn't find any other solution without installing and testing.
another half-solution you have is to increase vertical spacing and keep horizontal spacing, for example, so you can have separated horizontal groups of icons. (or the other way around).
Hi, it's very nice of you to offer those suggestions. I appreciate your input.
I've tried Desktop Icon Toy and it's getting there. Given a few more iterations it may be the answer I'm seeking.
Also, thanks for the suggestion about differential vertical/horizontal icon spacing.
Meanwhile I've posted a request in the coding snacks section, so we'll see if anyone there can help.

btw, why don't you put in a coding snack for this desktop icon align tool?
Good idea! ;)

I would very much like a tool to do the following:
I wish to select a range of icons and have these distributed, with equal spacing, based on the positions of the first and last in the selected range (similar to dtp/graphics applications' align/distribute tools).
The object is to achieve differential spacing for different groups of icons.
I'd like this to work for vertical and horizontal spacing.

Thus, one group of, say, 5 icons on the desktop could be equally spaced, based on the positions of 1 and 5 in that range. Call this range A.
Another group of, say, 3 icons could be equally spaced based on the positions of 1 and 3 in that range. Call this range B.
The spacing in range A could be different from the spacing in range B.

I don't mean the 'align to grid' feature built into Windows.
I use a utility called Align Icons 2.0 (see https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=6491.0). That will align selected items by Top/Bottom/Left/Right. While it does a nice job on 'align', it won't 'distribute'.

It is good.  (On my system it conflicts with other shell extensions, so I have to enable-disable it for every use.)

there are some desktop tools mentioned in this thread that you might want to have a look.. especially, Hawkeye ShellInit & Worktop.
Thanks, these seem more to control desktop areas than individual spacing of icons.  I'll look closer :)

lanux128: oh, i see.. 3200x1600 is quite a size..
Until last year I was using big CRTs but, boy, did they take up some space, plus I could cook my breakfast on top of them! ;D
Changing to decent LCDs was one of the better moves I've made.
btw, for such a tool, you can try the modding sites.. i'll let you know if i find anything..
Thanks for being so helpful, I appreciate your interest.

lanux128: cranioscopical: didn't understand you earlier.. now, i'm curious to have a look at your desktop with the unique icon spacings..
Thanks for your interest. They come and go, which is why I want some quick tool to align and distribute them. When I'm working for money (which is as seldom as I can manage ;)) it's always to deadlines, and I generate quite a number of files that I must cross-reference and update. I find that the fastest way to track and access these is to dump shortcuts on the desktop. My habit is to place these along screen edges. When I do so, I want to 'group' icons for the same project, and that's best done by spacing between groups. Fortunately I have 3200x1600 pixels to play with. There probably are better ways to work, but habit and routine mean that this system does the job for me nicely.

mimiihu: cranioscopical, try typing "align icons" at google. there's a couple programs called "align icons"
Thanks for the response, it was helpful of you.  I do have 'Align Icons' and it's useful, but it won't distribute icons on equal spacing between 2 points.

lanux128: correct me, if i'm wrong, but isn't this already can be done by right-clicking on the desktop?
Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean 'align to grid'.  I might have one group of icons whose spacing I want to be different from another. This I can achieve by placing them individually but I'd like a utility to do it quickly and accurately. Align to grid is going to affect everything. I appreciate the response, though--I should have been more specific when posting.

Off topic, I know, but this talk of aligning icons leads me to ask...

Does anyone know of a utility that will align and (more useful to me) distribute icons on the desktop?  OS/2 used to have a great tool to do this.  I want to select a range of icons and have the inter-icon spacing evenly distributed between the first and last. I'm seeking a utility that can do this horizontally and vertically.
