Effective Modern C++: 42 Specific Ways to Improve Your Use of C++11 and C++14, by Scott Meyers

As a long time C++ coder, I'm still skeptical of the benefits to releasing new versions of C++, but it's a good book, and one of those books where you learn interesting things about language design.  Note: Not suitable for learning C++ only for those with lots of C++ coding experience.

I guess the best way to celebrate is to do a good round of work on the program and try to make the program even better...

Very nice write up at TechRadar today for Screenshot Captor:

http://www.techradar...oftware-2016-1325138

Screenshot Captor seems to have ideas above its station somewhat. Far from just being a screenshot app - and, rest easy, it does do that - it'll grab images from your webcam, and it even includes a full suite of scanning tools to make sure your documents look their best.

But those advanced features don't stop there. Ever wanted to capture the contents of a scrolling window? It'll do that automatically, and even trim the margins for you. Need to capture a screen region of a fixed size? Piece of cake. Splicing areas out of screenshots, annotating, interfacing with advanced image editors, blurring areas you don't want seen? It's all here.

Download Screenshot Captor freeIf there's a downside, Screenshot Captor is a little esoteric in terms of its general interface, but the important bits are all well explained and easy to grasp. It's donationware, so while it's free to use, make sure you chip a little bit into the pot if Screenshot Captor is something you use regularly.

Very nice!

One day I might find a use for all these small controllers/computers ... possibly as some kind of electroshock thing that administers a jolt everytime it detects me about to buy another one.

UrlSnooper / Re: Reviving Roku Radio Snooper
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2016, 12:31 PM »
Now this is a blast from the past.

A little bit of history:

Many years ago (maybe 2004/2005/2006?) a little company called Roku contacted me about the possibility of releasing a special version of my UrlSnooper application, customized with features that would make it possible to send found stream urls directly to your Roku Soundbridge, which was one of the first good internet radios.  My memory is being paid about $10,000 to write the new version, which was available free to all Roku users.  That also paid for some new features that were made available to all UrlSnooper users (automatic network adapter detection, etc.)

Here's a screenshot for anyone curious -- you can see it's basically the standard URLSnooper UI with some extra display and functionality for connecting to the Roku hardware:
Screenshot - 7_20_2016 , 12_34_36 PM.png

Well, eventually Roku stopped selling the SoundBridge internet radio, and instead became quite successful with their streaming internet media (tv) players.

I do not know if this is going to help you, but I am not one to ever drop support for a product when there are still users, so I've gone ahead and built a new up-to-date version of Roku Radio Snooper, with the latest code from UrlSnooper.  You can find it here:

Let me know if it helps.

It's always really fun to see threads like this.

And it's my duty to remind everyone reading these threads to consider sending a little donation to the coders to say thanks (skwire and c.gingerich in this case); just click on the yellow dollar signs under their names.

« Last post by mouser on July 18, 2016, 01:00 PM »
There seem to be basically two kinds of projects on kickstarter:

1. Projects that are just vaporware and will probably never get finished or ship.
2. Projects that are basically finished and are ready to go into production and are just using kickstarter for pre-orders.

The second type seem pretty safe to back, though whether it's worth the money to pre-order depends on the cost and perks.

f0dder's advice all sounds right to me.

very smart changing to white on black color schemes -- i guess it shouldn't be surprising how much power that saves but it still is.  good tip for all of us looking to conserve battery.

Because it's so close to me, it looks like I will be attending GenCon, the large board game convention, on Aug 4-7 in Indiana.
If any other DonationCoder members are going, send me a message so we can meet up to say hello and play a game or two.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to pass a search result to an alias action as $$2
« Last post by mouser on July 15, 2016, 10:38 AM »
Sorry for the delay in replying..

It sounds like you are doing things right with the exec_ssh regex, and that should work passing both arguments.

The tricky part is how you are using the script_lib dosearch using the + thing.. That is getting a little advanced..

I wonder if you could solve it like this:
In the script_lib alias result, do a setuservar command to save the value of $$2 to a temporary variable like "uservar.temp.sshvar2", and then create a new exec_ssh replacement alias that only expects $$1 and then uses "%uservar.temp.sshvar2%" instead of $$2.

Wow I can't believe I don't have an option for whether to capture the mouse cursor/pointer.. The ability is in the code so that is an oversight, I will add one immediately.
Your second point about stderr is valid, let me consider.

I find a clipboard tool (of course I use my own, CHS) an excellent emergency backup for such occasions.  All I have to do is Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C and I've got a copy of the text in its current version saved in case of a crash.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who uses a clipboard tool for such purposes.

PopUp Wisdom / Re: "File can not be uploaded" error
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2016, 12:17 PM »
Ok believe it or not, looking at the source code it looks like the error is related to the SOUND FILE not being found or valid.
Can you try pushing the blue triangle button in the options next to the sound file and seeing if you get the same error.
Then try changing the sound file by clicking the yellow folder icon and choosing an existing sound file somewhere.

Now im not sure why it wouldnt find that default sound file unless you moved files around.

Try unchecking most of the books and see if the error goes away.

PopUp Wisdom / Re: "File can not be uploaded" error
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2016, 11:04 AM »
Now that is weird.
Popup wisdom is not trying to upload any files -- none of my apps do any kind of uploading of any data for any reason.

However if it's happening on startup it may be an update check error (no idea why it's being reported as "file can not be uploaded").

Go to Preferences, General Options tab, then uncheck "Check for updates at startup".

See if that fixes it.
