all of my programs use INI files that you can simply copy from the program directory (or replace)*; though there are a couple of cases where there is an additional settings file.  but regardless, they all use files to store settings, so import and export is not critical in my mind because it can be done manually.

*Clipboard Help+Spell uses a database file for efficiency.  While CHS includes a backup+restore function, i really do want to add an xml export function for easy of transfer.
Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about the ini file.  Stupid me.

I'll have them fly me out first class to personally install it on each pc, since end users cannot be trusted to run the setup program themselves.
That would be awesome!
4553
lol! Reminded me of those guys from Office Space who were in charge of the layoffs.
'Cept those guys were cool.  My company's guys throw the book at you whenever you ask for "fancy' stuff.  And the only reason for it is because they don't want to do any extra work.  They keep saying that if there are problems due to the software, they don't have enough people/time to take care of it.  Whatever.

I liked my previous company.  Whenever I needed something, i'd ask, and they would get it right away.  They trusted my instincts on this stuff.  They would get anything for me, it was great.  Even my management supports me here, it's just the IT guys that give me a hard time, for no reason.  Everyone knows I'm doing this for the benefit of the company, i just don't see what interest they have in making me slower.
4554
i was wondering if some kind of wizard based, or one-click style export/import feature could be implemented for all of mouser's programs.  Similar to how a lot of other programs do it like DOpus.  Good idea?
4555
you up for something like that?

sure.

however my limited experience with companies tells me they won't approve it unless i charge them a very high fee for a corporate site license.  that seems to be the main way they know it's legitimate software  :D

and so i will include a bill for $10,000.
haha...I have no problem with that.  i hope they pay!  heck, if people cared enough, they would all be more productive.  But they usually roll their eyes when i show them how cool this software is.
4556
:(
any way we can get help you get them "authorized" ?
Perhaps I can give you the email of the guy in charge, and you can write him some mumbo jumbo about the program being comaptible with everything and there shouldn't be any problems.  Also, that you are fine with me using it in a corporate environment.  And that is a very useful productivity tool.  And then add that you are personally happy with my use of it so far.

you up for something like that?  (Thanks)

And there are places where Firefox is not even allowed, companies lol
Whew!  I just checked, they didn't flag it.  I hate IE.

So, my company audited computers here.  As expected, they found over 20 unauthorized software on my computer.  Everything is freeware, except for a couple of personal license things.  Mouser, I hate to say, but you're responsible for at least 3 of them!  Crazy...I don't know how I'm going to live without FARR and LBC.  The annoying thing is that they don't buy this stuff for me, or they deny me if I ask for it.  And they give retarded reasons why they can't.
--"We don't know if this software is compatible with your machine.  We can't offer maintenance on all this software."  yeah, right.  FARR is going to be the death of my machine.  Like I'll be going to them to have them fix problems I'm having with FARR.  Get the F out of here.

Anyway, it's a little funny.  Why they give me a hard time when I'm trying to be faster and more productive, I have no idea.

IIRC there is also plugin for WinMerge somewhere in the web. I can find it if you want to :)

Will do that as well, thank you.

What are some good software for comparing Word documents?

Lots of cool stuff to try out.  Thanks!

For programs that are portable, how can you be sure no changes are being written outside of the program directory?  Or sometimes, these programs claim to make a change, but remove the changes when the program is exited.  Is there a program that monitors changes or something like that, just to be sure?  Maybe something that has to do with cirtual machines...I don't know.

I have a long standing dislike of wolfram after reading "A New Kind of Science" and questioning him at a talk he gave..
Care to give details?  I also sensed that somewhat from what little I know about him.  PM me if you don't want to be public.

may i hazard a guess that as a new user of the forum, this just didn't occur to andrew and that his intent was not "subversive"  ;D
Ok, ok...I kind of was thinking that as soon as I sent in the message.  OK, I'm sorry.  Normally, i wouldn't say anything about it, but i thought it made a good point about the whole topic being discussed.  Again, technically, there is nothing wrong and the polite thing to do would be what mouser said and point out the signature field.  I just wanted to specifically make a point in this case because it directly correlated to the discussion.  And granted, the point was a very subtle, minor one about intentions, psychology, etc.

Along these lines of psychology, I still feel compelled to say a little more.  Even operating under the pc assumtion that drapps did not know about the signature feature, there's still a feel of (almost negligible) annoyance at the way it is done.  Let's compare it to what Stephen Avery does:  he signs off on his posts with a "Shalom".  Even though he and drapps are technically doing the same thing, the psychology is different.  Stephen's is very innocent...I want to even say charming and pleasant.  Drapps leans more towards the annoying side.

The reason why I'm talking so much about it is because that's exactly the way a lot of us feel about OC.

Seriously, drapps, no disrespect.  The word subversive was much too strong for what I meant...I meant something much more neutral...I don't have a good enough vocabulary to know what that word is...but that's the word I meant.

This happens because when you are composing email in Outlook and the format is HTML, every time you hit enter, it adds a paragraph break; i.e. it adds a </P> and starts the next line with a <P>. If you then view the resulting message in Outlook, it looks fine, but when viewed in Gmail, Yahoo!, etc., etc. those </P> tags are converted to extra line breaks.

The only solution is for the person composing the message in Outlook to hit Ctrl+Enter instead of just Enter; Outlook then inserts a standard line break (<BR> tag) instead of a </P>.

The other solution is for Microsoft to FIX THIS... that will probably be a long wait.
seriously, it's so annoying.  Now that most email programs can handle html, it's not as bad.  But people need to relax with the fancy formatting in email.

I have to add one observation here.  I agree with mouser that there is technically nothing wrong with what OC is doing.  But I also understand what kartal is saying, and I do have one foot partially in his camp.  That is, I'm not as committed as he is to the idea, but I lean that way more so than the way of OC.

Now, Dr. Apps is saying all the right things regarding OpenCandy to satisfy the suspicions of the predominantly ad-unfriendly atmosphere here.  But I'd like to point out that you end each post with:
Dr. Apps
Software Community Guru
OpenCandy

Big deal, right?  Well, this kind of mimics the situation we are discussing.  Why do you put this at the end of each post?  This forum already allows for a signature field.  The signature field can be turned off in each person's user options.  So, by you not putting it in the signature, but in the actual post, you are bypassing the intent of that feature of this site.  Sure, you are not doing anything wrong, but your intent is clearly subversive.  This is the same kind of annoyance that we as users feel with things like OC for installing programs.  Yes, technically there's nothing wrong with it, but it's annoying.  Clever, is the most positive word I can use for it.  My opinion is that the amount of "good" that comes from OC is pretty minimal.

But again, I want to emphasize that it's not an issue I would really take sides about.  I would more likely just roll my eyes to OC and think "Cmon, man, you know what you're doing.  Maybe you have to do it, we all have to do things we don't absolutely love sometimes to get through life, but don't pretend like it's this great thing."

I have been an happy Xyplorer customer, but I can entertain a good dualpaner as well.

A dual-pane version of XYplorer is in beta as I write this... http://www.xyplorer....amp;start=0&sd=d
There's nothing about dual pane there.

The countdown timer is great, thanks for adding it.  Some thoughts:

--It's a little inconvenient to have the countdown settings dialog pop up every time you want to start the timer.  It would be nice to be able to set it once, and then repeatedly use it over and over again, until you need to change the initial value.

--On a similar note, it would be useful to access presets from a drop-down menu somewhere in the options menu.

For both of these ideas, I'm keeping in mind the fact that you want to keep the interface simple.  So both suggestions don't interfere with the interface, they just add options or functionality.

Outlook is so bad.  Makes me appreciate the Bat so much more.  Man, I love the Bat.  Groupwise was bad also.  Outlook is sooooo slow.  Bat is so fast.  I love the small programmers.  They focus on a subject and create wonderful, practical software.  These large companies create crap.  But you have to use it because everyone is using it.

Thanks for the link.  What is the site for?  Just information?  Looks good, I'm going to check it out.

Living Room / Re: Tell me what your software DOESN'T do... (a rant)

Then again, it's the kind of defeatist personality that I have
I have both kinds of personalities and they are both strong within me.  I can be self-deprecating, and then I can be extremely arrogant and stubbornly opinionated.  But through maturity, I've realized that the best thing to do is just state what it is very naturally.  I don't try to convince anyone anymore, if I can help it because it's usually futile.  But I'm not saying I'm neutral either.  I don't know what I'm saying.  I'm done.  forget it.
4574
So instead of resorting to Web 2.0 contortions such as Zhaaz or Glurgr,
Haha...that was funny.  Everyone thinks they're so hip.
You can do what mouser does and attach the word "robot" or "commander" or "dictator" at the end of of the program name.  And make sure it's all one word and no less than 24 characters.
4575
gogogadgetscott, I think you are right about Outlook.  It kind of sucks.  No, it really sucks.  I was so happy to get rid of Groupwise, I had no idea Outlook was this bad.  Still, i don't know if I prefer Groupwise.  I hated that too.  I wish we could just use the Bat.  I temporarily configured the Bat to work with the Exchange server, and it's really nice, but I can't do meetings on it, so it's useless.

I hate needlessly slow applications.  Frankly, if you're not doing something graphically intensive or with extremely large data crunching, I see absolutely no reason why programs shouldn't be speedy on any computer less than 3 years old.
