General Software Discussion / Shareware that don't have freeware replacements

I use many programs throughout the day and some of these are shareware. I like to use free ones though as far as possible. Below are some programs I couldn't simply find good free alternatives for:

1. PS Tray Factory

2. Internet Download Manager (FDM, FlashGet etc. won't work on Rapidshare)

3. EditPlus. No free program I know has this feature:



How about in your case?

Hi mousie,

First of all, have to say that I don't even use SSC or never tried it at least once. I would, if it had a floating menu that had buttons for various capture modes like active window, object, rectangular, full screen, scrolling etc. like this:

I just saw this thread and wanted to add my opinion.

To me, the windows start menu is dead. It's useless now that there are excellent applications ike Launchy/FARR. I use Launchy and LaunchOnFly (last free version) for file/folder/program launching.

kalos: Auto Raise AHK script that lanux128 linked to works fine. Give it a try.

Edit: You might want to edit the script and set

[Select]

hover_task_min_info = 0;

so that even minimized windows in the taskbar are activated upon mouse hover.

Opera has a right click Copy to Note option.

which is very weak compared w/ ScrapBook or EverNote.

(Not taking anything credit away from Opera, it's a super fast browser...but not a good candidate for the original poster's needs in my opinion)

Off late, I've been researching on several ways to launch programs/files/folders/web sites.

I've tried

a) adding a menu in DOpus but realized that I have to switch to its window and click on the menu to get to the items 

b)
1) Added a menu in PhraseExpress and set a hotkey ctrl+M to bring up the menu. I still have to press a hot key to bring up the menu
2) Similar hotkey menu activation using PS Hot Launch (better than DOpus method because the individual items automatically get a letter by which they can be selected)

c) Launchy, FARR etc.: I have to press a key like Alt+space to bring up the floating command line. Of course this method has the added advantage that you need not manually add items to the menu as they get auto picked from Program Files.

d) LaunchOnFly: This brings up the menu simply by moving mouse to one of the 4 screen edges or corners. Excellent! Here are some screens:





I'm using the last free version which can be downloaded from here.

Are there any similar better free programs that brings up a menu by simply mousing over a region of the screen?

I use Ctrl+F4 instead of Ctrl+W.

Here's what I've collected for several programs (some of these are set by me and not the default):

DirectAccess:

You can select a piece of text and press ctrl+shift+w to create new Autotext command.
ctrl+shift+A adds a new command to launch active application.

Opera:

Ctrl+B will paste a URL an already copied URL onto the clipboard and press enter for you.
c - closes current tab
z - go back
x - go forward
ctrl+Z - bring up the last closed tab
F8 - Focus the address bar.

EverNote:

To jump to the blank note, press Ctrl+N
Ctrl+Alt+N - to jump to new note from any application
Ctrl+Alt+V - to paste to new note from any application
ctrl+F: to focus the search box.
When search brings up a big note, F3 (jump down by highlighed words) / Shift-F3 (jump up)

Gmail

# - Delete the current conversation

XYPlorer

F7: to toggle between current and previous folder locations
You can toggle InfoPanel using F12, and there are special shortcuts like shift+F12 to maximise IP and alt+F12 to toggle to previous panel size.
ctrl+N: create new folder
ctrl+shift+N: create new file
focus address bar: Alt+D
ctrl+P: to copy path to clipboard
ctrl-q: preview

Firefox

c - closes current tab
z - go back
x - go forward
ctrl+F12 - bring up the last closed tab
a - previous tab
s - next tab
Alt+D - Focus the address bar.

there are right-click context menu tools for various uploader services.
if you use screenshot captor to capture images, you should be able to right click on any screenshot and upload from the thumbnail panel in screenshot captor.
