General Software Discussion / Re: Software to change tooltip settings in XP?
« Last post by AndyM on May 11, 2008, 03:37 PM »
Isn't there a simple solution?

I have a hotkey that makes a window "stay on top".  If I click on an empty part of the taskbar and hit the hotkey, the tooltips come back.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Idea: Insert System Date From Context Menu
« Last post by AndyM on April 27, 2008, 02:43 PM »
No the context menu is not hard and thank you for your response.

Not sure if this will help:

https://www.donation...57.msg69966#msg69966

someone noted that it's "shellex", not "shell" at the end of the path to the proper key, I never went back and checked which one my machine uses.  I use this technique to put several .bat/.cmd/.ahk routines in all my context menus at once.

Please refrain from commenting if you cannot be of any aid in giving me a solution for my idea.

I for one learn a lot by other people's suggestions to posted queries.  So I'd prefer it if people continued to offer suggestions even if they don't exactly fit the poster's requirements.  Plus you never know if there's not a better way to come at a solution than the one you originally had in mind.

first partition on second drive - (f0dder says you dont need one if you have 2GB ram tongue)
I have the Temp folders there and Temp Internet files too. Just nice to have the messy stuff all in one package!

Now I'm wondering if I should have the swap file in the first (small) partition of the second drive, and all the temp and other messy stuff in another partition on the second drive.
454
Thanks for the detail!!!

By the way if you want to put all the temp files with PageFile.sys in the first partition on drive 2 I suggest you use a fixed size page file.
-Carol Haynes (April 17, 2008, 11:44 AM)

How big?

Note it is also worth keeping a page file on C: of at least 64Mb - that way if you get BSODS in the future the errors will be logged in the system event logs. If you don't have that small page file available Windows can't save Crash Dumps at all and there will be no error messages in the logs to help with trouble shooting. Again make it fixed size.

Once you have set up your system use something like Perfect Disk to do a boot time defrag so that your C: and page file drives are optimized.

I'm going to have some questions about this when I get back on Monday  :D

moved all of my internet settings ... onto the data partition.

How did you move your settings?
456
I thought this was an interesting thread back in February, but academic for me.

Now I suddenly find myself about to take delivery on a new laptop (XP Pro) with two hard drives.  When I thought I was only going to have one drive, I intended to have 2 partitions (C: for system and applications, D: for data).

Based on what I've read here, I'll put the swap file on the second hard drive, and also any cache and temp files that I can figure out how to move.

    1.  Should the swap file go in it's own partition on the second drive?

    2.  Should I think about putting my data in a partition on the second drive instead of the first?  If I do that, can I still call the data partition "D:" or will the drive letters only go in order (eg C: and D: on the first drive, E: and F: on the second)?

    3.  If I don't get the partitioning right the first time, any recommendations on a good, inexpensive partition manager utility?

Any and all advice will be most welcome!!!

Andy

I think this would be useful, but I have no idea how to go about it.

I adapted someone's script so that Left-Button/ScrollUp(ScrollWheel) sends {Enter}.

I'll post it if you're interested and if I can properly attribute the script.

Living Room / Re: My Taskbar Notification Area Competition
« Last post by AndyM on March 15, 2008, 12:09 PM »
Mine looks like Nosh's, 3 high & 3 wide (I like two rows of taskbar buttons), but instead of Autohide, I use PSTray Factory to hide the other 30 icons, 13 of which are AutoHotkey processes.

At 3x3, when an extra icon becomes active, say for a notification, it's very obvious that the  system tray area has gone to 4 wide - it catches my eye.

I see in the Tab Mix Plus configuration dialog box there are two yes/no options:  "Use Firefox's built-in Session Restore feature" and "Enable Session Manager" (Tab-Mix's version).

I wonder if unchecking both boxes would stop the unwanted message on restart (if disabling the whole feature was an acceptable trade-off).

For that matter, if Tab Mix Plus can disable the Session remembering, it probably could be disabled via a change in Firefox's about:config settings. Maybe there's even a setting to keep the feature and just disable the "do you want to restore?" dialog.

Sorry about the multiple posts, my browser froze on me.
I just figured it was residual shakes from withdrawal symptoms.  My twitch is slowly receding. :P

Wouldn't a short autohotkey script limited to FARR being the active window work?
Assign any key you want to "\".

Or plug something else in first, like a cheap USB drive, to use up E:, and then your U3 will take the next two available, K: and L:, which are suitably adjacent.

(I suggest attaching it to a neck cord that allows you to detach it. The empty cord around you neck will help to remember you left you stick in the computer as you walk away.)

Or a really long cord that you don't detach it from.  The sudden choking sensation will help you remember :)

Decide if you want U3 or not.  If the drive comes with it and you don't want it, take the proper steps to get it off (not just delete files like I tried).

Otherwise when you plug it into a machine that doesn't have autorun disabled, or you forget to hold the Shift (?) key down, the U3 drive will load stuff onto the machine.  I think it's supposed to remove the stuff when you take out the drive, but doesn't always.  The stuff may be harmless, but people may not want you leaving droppings on their machines.

I might not have all these details right, but my point is to watch out if you want to avoid or understand the U3 behavior.

I'm a registered Xplorer2 user, I like the software, and I still use it for certain things.

But it's not my default file manager. I keep going back to Windows Explorer which works fine for me most of the time (with a few tweaks like CPExt and Ctrl-RightClick_ClosesParentFolder 8)).

It's called CPext:

Adds a column to Windows Explorer details view that shows the extension part
of a filename.
Author: John Williams, 2006-09-21, http://www.xrayz.co.uk

I saw recently on the Shell Extension City website something called DMEXBAR that does many things, including adding an Extension column and I assume that would work the same way.

I wonder why explorer keeps the date sort as a secondary sort when sorting by extension but does not do that when sorting by Type.

Andy M, are you using Windows XP? When I tried to replicate your success, I couldn't. I could neither get a column with the extentions shows as three letters after the . nor would the sort orders stick after I chose a new sort.

oops, I forgot I have a shell extension installed that gives me a new column called ext.  And if I try this using the Type column, it doesn't work.  So let me find that little utility and I'll come back and post the link.  It's really much handier anyway than the very wide File Type column.

In an explorer window, I first sorted by date, and then by extension.  Within each extension group, the date order was maintained.

She drifted way too close to my lane.  That caused me to have to swerve a bit and I squeezed my jelly donut too hard, causing the insides to squirt out onto my pants!!  And when I looked down to see how much of a mess the jelly caused my cell phone slipped out of its comfortable position - nestled between my shoulder and ear - and fall....right into my coffee mug FULL of coffee, which was sitting on the driver's seat between my legs.  And the coffee just erupted and went all over the keyboard of my notebook PC, which was balanced sooo nicely on my knee, kind of.  Then because the hot coffee was really HOT, I wriggled around a lot and that caused the notebook, already smoking from the coffee that spilled on the keyboard, to fall completely off my knee!!  As I leaned over to try and pick up the notebook my cigarette slipped right out of my lips and down the front of my shirt, making these weird looking burn marks all over my chest!

I mean, this woman could have killed me!!  The FOOL!!
People who make me spit coffee all over my screen cause I'm laughing too hard to swallow right  :D

People who seem unaware of those around them.
rudeness, and/or a total lack of consideration of others

A particular case of the above:  People who don't clean the snow off their cars and then drive while peering through a tiny cleared area on their windshield, trailing clouds of snow and dangerous flying chunks behind them. >:(

Except as soon as I let go, the script does it's thing.  Any clues on how to fix this?

I did something crude but effective, at least for when I end up at the right edge of the screen while resizing a window by dragging the right edge.  If the left button is down and in the hot space at the right edge, when I let go the mouse gets moved two pixels away from the edge and the loop continues:

Loop
{
  MouseGetPos,mx,my
  GetKeyState,lbutton,LButton,P
  If (mx=1919) and (my>200) and (my<800) and (lbutton="D")
  {
  keywait,LButton
  MouseMove,1917,my
  }
  If (mx=1919) and (my>200) and (my<800) and (lbutton="U")
  {
    If tabbed=0
    {
   .
   .
   .

better suggestions welcome!

If I drag a window border all the way to the right edge, I don't want to Alt-Tab/Esc, so I checked first if the Left Mouse Button wasn't down, dragging:
Loop
{
  MouseGetPos,mx,my
  GetKeyState,lbutton,LButton,P
  If (mx=1919) and (my>200) and (my<800) and (lbutton="U")
  {
    .
    .
