I've never really "gotten on" with Servant Salamander. I've had demos installed at least three times (most recently 2.5 about two weeks ago) and just can't see what all the fuss is about. However, Nosh, you've given me some very pointed factors to look at that I had not considered before an I'll give it another shot!

Thanks for the pointers, Tom. I missed your post earlier this morning. I'll take a look and see if I can't get Sp-2 slipstreamed onto a copy of my OEM XP disc. I *think* the issue is one of copy protection though... we'll see.

Actually, I have to say that the start menu is even more useful to me now in vista. I simply hit the windows logo key, type what I am looking for, and its found in the start menu. I can even do folder browsing like in farr. The Vista start menu has impressed me. I love it

This is why the Vista Start Menu is so great for Windows XP users!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Locate32 Plugin for FARR by Okke
« Last post by Darwin on September 23, 2007, 01:33 PM »
The only problem i see is that i use the icon view and thus, can't see the 25 results, only 10, because the +sall action doesn't work.

I just went into options - Plugins, Updates, and Fonts, Click to Examine and Configure Plugins, selected Locate32 and then selected Configure Advanced Plugin Options. Once in there it's easy to change the maximum number of files found to 10... Don't know if this addresses your problem or not?

Hi guys - thanks for all the suggestions. I've defragged my registry using Resplendence Registry Manager and rebooted. Problem persists. It's possible that the RRM defragmentation option differes from TuneUp Utilities - I'll have to investigate that further. EDIT: No, they are the same...

I can't find any registry entries that differ from those that Dirhael...

So, I'm going to sit on this for a day or two until I have more time and try all of the above again while looking closely at third party program settings, etc.

I'll report back!

Just to combine some info from the other thread and extrapolate from it... note that Carol was annoyed to discover that the price of an update to 3.2 had gone up to $49.99 in June and that it has now gone up to $59.99. Not good. The price keeps rising...

Great! This should spur development of more plug-ins. I took a look recently at writing a plug-in and quickly realised that I was way out of my element depth. When I have time, I'll take a look at all of these resources and will take another crack at it

Great Scott! I've managed to start a thread that I've already started - even the wording is similar . I don't know if this a sign of early onset dementia or just the result of sleep depravation but the only thing salvaging this from being a complete waste is that Company Complaints is a more appropriate board for it... (Darwin shuffles off in his woolly sheepskin slippers, muttering to himself).

Sorry everyone. This is really embarrassing  :-[.

You're absolutely, right, Carol. I'm not so sure that Magix "gets it" though, and that is why I am concerned...

Beth you posted as I was typing the above (and I went on an ice cream run so just discovered that my post didn't go up!) - you're right about RealDraw. I've been attracted by it for some time, though I've yet to take a look at it.

And edbro too! $35... tempting...

No word yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to request a refund (given that they state quite clearly that they will not issue refunds because of their generous 60 day trial, I doubt they have a mechanism in place to deal with them, so DSM is probably as good an avenue as any).

I'll keep you all posted!

General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis True Image OR maybe not ???
« Last post by Darwin on September 22, 2007, 06:10 PM »
I'm actually wondering when, if ever, True Image Workstation 9.1 is going to be updated. I've got a maintenance contract on that, but fat lot of good it's doing me! Of course, I shouldn't complain - it's stable and does exactly what I need it to but it's irksome to see the Home version, which I upgraded from in June 2006 go through two new versions without so much as a bug fix on mine... Yes, I am of the firm belief that if you've got nothing good to say you should come say it to me  :-[

Hey Steeladept and Dirhael - many thanks! I'll work my way through these to see if I can spot any problems and report back. I'm glad I bumped the thread - almost didn't!

I hear you Carol. I'm waiting on what happens when they release version 4 - the upgrade pricing structure will be a good indicator of which way things are going to go. I'm concerned that that's the point at which Magix decides to take Xtreme Pro into an even higher price category, maybe have it competitive with Corel Draw, but I'm just going to wait and see. If that is the way they're going to go I'm not going to keep upgrading anyway, so I'd just be throwing good money after bad paying for the 3.02 - 3.2 jump just on the offchance that doing so would make the 3.x to 4 upgrade affordable.
4495
Hmm... the context menus might be a good place to start - mine are way out of control. This will force me to rein them in, even if this doesn't prove to have been the problem!

As far as I know the neither this app nor any other that I run is ASP*d. I've certainly never packed its exe or any other exe and I don't *think* the author has done this, either. Do  you know of any way to check my other packages?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I could have sworn I saw a thread here about the update to Acronis True Image 11
but cant find it with forum search or FF search plugin

It's here, Tom!

Just posted about a different problem that I'm having and thought I'd bump this one while I am at it... Shameless! I realise that the lack of a response over the past 10 months is a pretty strong indicator that no one has any idea about this problem, but hope springs eternal  ;D

Hi all,

I use an antiquated 16 bit package to analyse 3D morphometric data on Neanderthal, early anatomically modern and modern human crania. All good fun... For some reason, the software (Morpheus - not to be confused with the old P2P client) will no longer run on my computer (running the 32bit version of XP Pro). I can copy the program directory onto a USB  thumbdrive and run it without problem from other computers running Win2k, XP Home and XP Pro but on my computer, running either from the stick or from the directory on my harddrive, opening the application and then clicking anywhere on the toolbar causes it to crash with the following error (note that I had to record the process with Blueberry Flashback Recorder in order to be able to read the error message it flashes by in a millisecond:

Error message when selecting menu.png

I've tried a number of things - reexpanding autoexec.inf, config.inf., and command.com from the OS installation disks, searching for any duplicate dlls elsewhere on the harddrive (there weren't any) in case of a versino conflict, and throwing my cookies at the computer. None of it has helped in the slightest...

Any thoughts? This used to run on this computer no problem... so I am assuming I have a conflict somewhere.

I have a bad feeling about the direction that Magix is taking them. Xara's graphics packages used to be attractive because they offered an affordable alternative to applications like Adobe Illustrator. It *looks* to me like Magix is doing a Corel (a la PaintShop Pro) with the "standard" version - dumbing it down (no doubt with new versions to be released once every 12 months) and looking to position the Pro version in a much higher price slot. The whole business has left a bad taste in my mouth - I used to read the forums regularly and enthusiastically but I can't be bothered anymore.

No, this isn't a rant about software economics and capitalism. I don't mind paying for a professinoal graphics package but I strenuously object to having a new version rushed out as a cash grab within a two months of the software being released. Charging for bug fixes so soon after release is akin to a car manufacturer asking customers to pay to have the malfunctioning SRS airbags replaced in the car that they bought the day it was released two months earlier.
