General Software Discussion / Re: Synergy Virtual KVM

ShareMouse not good. It's from Bartels, so please see any thread world-wide where some of Bartels' products is treated, Bartels himself quickly intervenes, and in a way you won't believe your eyes.

I've read a few threads like that with him jumping in. I've also seen ugliness on both sides. But yeah - they tend to get really nasty really quickly.

There was a thread in the ASP newsgroups with someone complaining about him. That didn't go well. I pointed to a thread outside the ASP, and promptly had the SAA (Sergeant at arms) jump on me for it -- I didn't renew my membership after that.

Life is too short for some things. I finally gave up and sprung for TeamViewer a while ago. I could never get Synergy KVM to work reliably or acceptably. There were always bad surprises on the rare occasions I could get it to work at all.

It seems to be going ok for me. Laggy mouse, but so far, so good.

Does TeamViewer let you do that? I thought it was for remote control.

1. We still ain't ready worth a damn.

Seems to me that there are a few areas that contribute to the problem. The major 2 that I see are the way society is structured (e.g. How can you possibly prepare much when you live in a rathole apartment building?), and people not preparing (in large part because of the structure of society). The reliance on "the state" to take care of people is pretty much delusional.

2. Voluntarism during emergencies may become a thing of the past.

I hope not. But this points out "state worship" and how people expect the state to "take care of them". Of course YOU can't take care of yourself. Only the state can! Cookies? They're not good enough unless they were purchased with money stolen taxed from honest people and came from a factory using the cheapest possible ingredients available...

3. You can't expect rational or responsible behavior from some elected officials when the chips are down.

Sigh... Yep. Unless you count them "not letting a good crisis go to waste" as rational or responsible. :(

So far the laggy mouse it tolerable, but barely. I don't use my Mac all that much, so we'll see. If it costs me more than $50 in sanity, I'll get one of the others.

But thanks for the suggestions. I only need it on my desktop, so my laptop isn't a concern for now.

General Software Discussion / Heads Up for Video Players on Android Tablets
« Last post by Renegade on November 02, 2012, 09:39 AM »
HOW TO SEEK PROPERLY IN VIDEO PLAYERS ON TABLET COMPUTERS -- Does your tablet not let you seek inside of a video? The below applies...

I got a bit sick of my default video player on my Android tab, and decided to get a new one.

The problem with the default is that it INSISTS on doing a "Media scan" and just wasting my time. Pisses me off. Just shut up and open up so I can watch a darn video! I don't care about scanning! Grrr...

This is a major problem when I upload new videos onto it. It insists on scanning again. Not happy.

(I'm very unpatient with "things".)

So, I got installed a couple other video players...

Now, the video I wanted to watch was 7 hours long. I'd already watched a couple hours on my desktop. Not really all that interested in the first two hours again...

However, and I should have known this immediately but had turned my brain off from "work-mode", the players defaulted to using hardware decoding instead of software. This prevents the video player from seeking properly, and you can't just seek around in the video. For a 2 minute video, this isn't a real problem, but for 7 hours? Nightmare.

Anyways, when downloading video players, check for a "software decoding" option. It will make life MUCH easier.

The downside is that software decoding is more battery intensive, and you'll run out of juice sooner. Hardware decoding is much more efficient. Which is why hardware gets set as the default.

Now, that may not be true for all tabs or all video players, but it will hold true for enough of them to warrant checking it on yours.

Hope that helps someone.

God... Some days I just loathe computers...

Ok... Here's the skinny...

Macs suck. Badly.

Here's the answer...

You can't run the Mac client as a service... I must run in "Desktop" mode.

It then works.

I'll give it a spin, but I may end up looking into your suggestions (@wraith808).

Thing was, if offered the opportunity to run something like that as a desktop application, or a service/daemon, OF COURSE you're going to choose service/daemon.

So far the mouse isn't very smooth on the Mac, but at least I don't need to deal with my crummy chiclet keyboard there. My Mac mouse is ok, but the keyboard is a major barrier to using my Mac sanely. I'm sure it's great for 10-year old girls with tiny fingers, but not for my chubby hands. :P

Has anyone ever gotten the Synergy virtual KVM to work?

http://synergy-foss.org/

I tried a while back, no luck. And tried again, and still no luck.

Do I need to sacrifice a chicken or something? Is there some kind of black art that I need to learn?

I've got the client (Mac) and server (Windows) working (apparently...), but I just cannot get between them.

I'm banging my mouse against the top of the screen, and banging my head against the wall.

I've got to admit, while I don't do much functional programming, I really like the functional approach. There's something "sexy" about it in a "mathy" sort of way. :D

The last functional languages I used were Erlang and XSLT. I really liked XSLT. Some very, seriously cool stuff to it. (It's a declarative functional language, so a bit different than others -- I just sort of 'clicked' with it.)

The solution will involve serious privacy implications. Because an intelligent solution would be outright rejected. e.g. Limit on number of calls you can make, perhaps? Nobody needs to make a call every 10~15 seconds for prolonged periods.

Just for clarification- hack is a bit sensationalist (they enabled the disabled camera).  But still impressive.

And within five months, they had hacked Android. Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera! And they figured out it had a camera, and they hacked Android."

It sounds like the camera had been disabled at the OS level, and that they'd rooted it and changed the config somehow. The details are kind of sketchy.

But like you said, still impressive.

I've often said it - kids are awesome!

I forget where I saw it, but there's a study on "creative genius" (or something like that - I might have phrased it wrong - but close enough), and what they found was before kids enter school, they score insanely high -- like ALL kids do (98%). Then, as they progress through school, they lose it. School basically sucks it out of them. By the time they graduate, nobody's scoring jack anymore.

I'm not sure whether or not legalizing marijuana is the solution to the problem here... Would it simply make you no longer care? An Asian elephant called Koshik has astounded scientists with his Korean language skills.

Researchers report that the mammal has learnt to imitate human speech and can say five words in Korean: hello, no, sit down, lie down and good.

The zoo animal places the tip of his trunk into his mouth to transform his natural low rumble into a convincing impression of a human voice.

Actually, they're not in any way controversial. Merely "inconvenient" facts.

For the first, it's just a matter of fact. On September 11th, 2012, support calls were turned down. The General in charge of the operation ordered troops in for support, and within moments was arrested as the 2IC took over and things returned to "normal". No controversy there. Just matters of fact.

The second is even less controversial. It's just an avatar of Che Guevera wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.

For the third, well, again. Just matters of fact. Al Quaida is an invention of the CIA. This is broadly known, and in no way controversial. It's just a matter of fact.

Like I said -- Orwellian -- http://gutenberg.net...ebooks01/0100021.txt

'There is a Party slogan dealing with the control of the past,' he said. 'Repeat it, if you please.'

'"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,"' repeated Winston obediently.

THIS is EXACTLY the Orwellian nightmare.

Another short 1984 snippet - from immediately after the above
'"Who controls the present controls the past,"' said O'Brien, nodding his
head with slow approval. 'Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has
real existence?'

Again the feeling of helplessness descended upon Winston. His eyes flitted
towards the dial. He not only did not know whether 'yes' or 'no' was the
answer that would save him from pain; he did not even know which answer he
believed to be the true one.

O'Brien smiled faintly. 'You are no metaphysician, Winston,' he said.
'Until this moment you had never considered what is meant by existence. I
will put it more precisely. Does the past exist concretely, in space? Is
there somewhere or other a place, a world of solid objects, where the past
is still happening?'

'No.'

'Then where does the past exist, if at all?'

'In records. It is written down.'

'In records. And----?'

'In the mind. In human memories.'

'In memory. Very well, then. We, the Party, control all records, and we
control all memories. Then we control the past, do we not?'

'But how can you stop people remembering things?' cried Winston again
momentarily forgetting the dial. 'It is involuntary. It is outside oneself.
How can you control memory? You have not controlled mine!'

O'Brien's manner grew stern again. He laid his hand on the dial.

For those links - yes - I've already read them. :( (I'll stay in that thread for that travesty.)

I'm sure there are more.

This is... disturbing...

I started to write a post, then decided not to post it. It was still in a tab in my browser, so I'll put it here in a spoiler as it is related. (I never finished the post.)

Spoiler
It seems that speech is being censored on Facebook more and more. A lot of people use Facebook as a platform for a group or ideology or something, and it seems increasingly that Facebook is starting to block some things. I've seen it twice in the last few days.

Now, for government censorship (public), most people are basically behind governments not censoring. but not really - they mostly just pay lip service to allowing popular speech, then balk at any kind of unpopular speech, which pretty much defeats the purpose of free speech. Still, they at least pay lip service to free speech and no censorship.

But, when it comes to companies (private), it seems like a very different beast. Attitudes change, and there's much more gray area there.

For example, if you have a small web site dedicated to ACME rocket skates and other dangerous ACME products, you don't really want people posting about free speech, and would likely block those posts, or ban users. This seems more reasonable for a topically dedicated site. But non-topical, or social sites that start censoring, there seems to be a bit more reservation there, or a sense of being less likely to tolerate "censorship".

It's pretty hard to see any of those images as "offensive". They're pretty simple and certainly not controversial. Well, no more controversial than stating things like there's a moon in the sky.
