Probably an overly sensitive antivirus program.  it probably has something to do with the way it hooks into the dialog boxes.  It's a legit program, I'd just set it in the exclusions list.  Kaspersky doesn't have a problem with it.

Personally, I think Direct Folders is the better program.  But I like Filebox Extender as well.  That is, I don't mean to say it's a bad program.  It's great also, probably my second choice.  That directory synching thing is very cool, David.P!  I didn't know about that.

Still, DF is better overall because of a few specific things.  I've written a review about it on my website (it's actually hosted by DC):

and, of course there's the big review here from a while back:

« Last post by superboyac on August 21, 2009, 02:35 AM »
OK, so I decided to give up on microEd and go to the Windows plain text editor option.  It's better, but now I lose this feature:  The Bat can color quotations and stuff according to your settings.  If I paste a quote in the Windows editor, it doesn't get the color applied to it automatically.  if I do the same in microEd, the color automatically gets applied.  So now I lose that.  The Bat developers need to work on all these things with the editor.

Like I said, I love the program, but it seems the developers are stuck in their own little world.  Development is pretty slow, which is not a big deal because the program works well and is mature.  But little fixes like this never happen.  What they spend all their time fixing and adding is beyond me.  I'm certain they are predominantly weird, little features that most people don't care about.  Their documentation is horrible and non-existant.  Again, I normally wouldn't care about that, but the Bat has so many options and features, even i can't figure everything out on my own.

And of course, their support is way too archaic.  It's a mailing list.  So to ask a question, you have to sift through a whole mailing list.  They have a forum, but all the "real" users use the mailing list, so there's nothing of value in the forums.  They might as well not even have it.  So, the best way to read the mailing list is to use a newsgroup reader unless you want to actually subscribe to the emails, which is nonsense just to ask a couple of questions about your email program.  It's not like I want to follow the development of the Bat every day, like it's the most important thing in my life (I already do that here!).

Seriously, I love the program, but they need to get with the times.

I used to have the settings you have above, Innuendo.  However, with Auto-Format turned on, you'll notice that if you write and then start a new line by pressing <return>, as soon as you start writing on the new line, the cursor will jump back to the previous line and continue there.  It's annoying.  For example, I wouldn't be able to do the following:

----
list1
list2
list3
---

Because as soon as I press enter, list2 will jump back and turn into "list1 list2"

Again, my question stands:  why can't it just behave like a normal editor, or at least have the ability through checkmarks/options, whatever, to behave normally.  Look, even this DC forum posting box is normal and there are no options.  The whole idea of it not able to behave normally is mind boggling to me for an email program.

You are a good person, mouser.   i appreciate it.

For those who are making screencasts of their software, some observations:

1) making multiple short screencasts that are very focused on a particular idea is 100x easier than trying to make one big long screencast; plus it has to be easier on the user.  i think 2-4 minutes is the sweet spot.
2) you'd be surprised how long it takes to explain something -- so plan to focus really narrowly.
3) doing a bunch of screencasts one after the other can be quite productive -- once your mind gets into the flow of speaking while you are using the software, it gets more comfortable.  so plan to sit there and do quite a few retakes before you start to get comfortable, and then do a bunch of them in a row.
4) if you're aiming for doing lots of screencasts quickly, instead of perfecting each one, then just keep restarting the recording until you get it right, rather than try to edit it post production.
These are great tips.  Thanks.  This can be applied for any demonstration of anything...I can use it at work when explaining technical things to an audience.  Thank you.

Personally I just use Alt+L to wrap-format the paragraph I'm in, and that seems to work just fine?
I understand the Alt-L thing, but that's not the only issue.  Besides, like I said in another thread, why do we have to do that in the first place?  I don't have to Alt-L in any other program I write in, but I have to do it in my email editor where I write more than anywhere else.  They need to fix the wrapping so it works like a normal editor.

General Software Discussion / The Bat: Fix all the wrapping issues...now!
« Last post by superboyac on August 17, 2009, 11:28 PM »
The Bat's wrapping issues are really starting to wear on me.  They need to fix this immediately.  I mean, it is really ridiculous.  It's the best email program out there, but this needs to be fixed right now.
I've commented on this here many times, but I'm doing it again.  I've mentioned it on their stupid mailing lists and the reaction is always that it's not a big deal.  Look, email's basic function is writing a bunch of text.  That text needs to wrap like every other freaking box that you write in on a PC...all the way from Notepad to Word to any little form on the web.  Why is it that everything can wrap normally but the Bat can't?

I just noticed that with the way I had my settings, the paragraph wrapping on the other end for my emails look stupid...all jagged with long and short lines.  I didn't know this because I have it wrapping fine in the editor while I'm composing the message.  I've tweaked the wrap settings many times just to get it to wrap like normal in my editor while I type...which is usually i want it to wrap according to my message window size.  No other program have I had such issues, even with the slew of text editors I have tried.

And no, I don't want to use the plain windows editor option instead of Microed because then I'll lose the nice color features and other things.

I'm going to add some screen shots later when I have time about all these things.

This needs to be a priority for the developers.  Don't even get me started on their archaic mailing list.

General Software Discussion / Re: notetaker that uses odf as default?
« Last post by superboyac on August 12, 2009, 05:50 PM »
Also, TexNotes has the ability to export their notes in a variety of very flexible ways, including plain text and rtf.

i also think it would be a great idea to be able to store the data from a notetaker in an open way.  however, on the programmer's side I think it may be a slightly unreasonable request.  Especially when it comes to organizing and all the other things the notetaking program does.  I just think it's asking too much to retain all the notetaking features in some kind of open way where it can be imported/exported to other programs.  but if all you want to be able to do is READ the notes and their contents (and not their organization, linking, fancy formatting, etc.) then there are a couple of programs that do this.  Like I said, AM-Notebook can do this.

You would have a hard time finding this, in my opinion.  The closest thing I can think is AM-Notebook which stores notes as regular text files.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: McAfee again. Don't ask.
« Last post by superboyac on August 11, 2009, 12:17 PM »
McAfee is terrible.  It wasn't able to catch a really bad malware/virus called "Advanced Virus Removal".  This is the enterprise edition of mcAfee.  horrible antivirus solution.  It really did a number on my computer.  I'll continue using Kaspersky when i have the choice.  For me, the choice is between kaspersky and NOD32, and I use kaspersky because it's cheaper for me and i think it's more configurable than NOD32.  Although, a lot of people claim that NOD32 is lighter on resources and overall very efficient.
4462
These are all very complicated solutions to a very simple problem.  There's no need for an external editor in this day and age for email programs, unless you're trying to do something very specific.  All I'm asking for is normal wrapping behavior.  Even this forum post box wraps normally.  An email editor should be able to wrap without problems.
4463
For example, the Bat still can't wrap lines like a normal editor.

Can you elaborate on this point?
I started a thread about it on the mailing list:
http://www.mail-arch...nt.com/msg98447.html

This is actually a different issue.  The actual thread I started for the wrapping specifically is here:
http://www.mail-arch...nt.com/msg97934.html

I'll quote it here.  You can see how the wrapping is already screwed up in the post.  I wrote to the mailing list using Microed and everything looked fine on the screen editor in the program, and you can see how it showed up:
I'm  using  microEd  and I have the free caret option turned off.  In email
programs I've used, and
also  with  the  bat, I always have issues with word wrappiing.  Specifically
for the Bat, I notice
problems  when  I  type  a paragraph, but then go back to edit something or
delete something in the
middle  of  the paragraph.  What happens is that the line wrapping gets all
screwed up and if I add
some  words to the middle of the paragraph, that line I added on to will now
stretch way beyond the
regular wrapping edge.  Similarly, if I delete words, the line will shorten but
it won't bring along
the next line with it...in other words, only that one line will shorten even if
more words from the
next line can fit above.

The  point is, the wrapping only works when you are typing the paragraph from
scratch.  When you go
back to edit a paragraph, all the wrapping gets broken and messed up.  Why
can't it dynamically wrap
everything like any other text editor would do?  Is there a setting somewhere?

I've  run  into  this before and someone suggested that when that happens, I
reformat the paragraph
with some shortcut (I forgot what it was, but it was something similar to just
aligning left).  But
my real question is why can't the program do this automatically?
4464
The way Outlook does a lot of things is real shitty.  Especially for such a widely used and mature program.  Thanks for the link, I always enjoy when people write about this stuff because they usually go ignored while people bitch about the more "important" issues.

I use Outlook at work.  I use the Bat at home.  The Bat is awesome in 90% of everything, but it's editor has issues also, and they never get fixed.  Very few people pay attention to these little things and they go unfixed for ages...version after version, these things remain.  It's ridiculous.  I'm almost of the mindset, forget the big major improvements and focus on tweaking the little things.  Why?  Because for mature software, the big, major features are not going to be used much, and the little, everyday things are always being used.  but nobody talks about it, nobody thinks about it, so nobody fixes it.

For example, the Bat still can't wrap lines like a normal editor.  And it's been like 10 years.  And there's no easy way of bringing it up.  Their most widely used troubleshooting/community group is on mailing lists.  It's so stupid.  Forums are way more efficient and productive for this kind of thing.

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by superboyac on August 03, 2009, 01:17 PM »
I've never used or purchased any Collectorz software, but I remember checking their software out when they first released all their programs & I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "These guys are taking one program and database, changing the labels to suit different types of collections, and reselling the same program over and over masquerading as different, distinct programs. Is there any possible way a software company could exhibit more greed and be even more unscrupulous?"

Sadly, all these years later, Collectorz has shown me the answer to that question. My sympathies to all who bought into their crap & may the authors have a special circle of Hell reserved for them due to their greed & business practices.
I don't have a problem with them making a core engine, and then tweaking it for several different applications.  A lot of developers do that.  Like Powermarks and MP3Rat, which are both developed around the same search dialog box feature.  So that doesn't bother me.

But they have always had somewhat of an abrasive attitude.  Years ago, in the lifetime license era, they were good with customer support.  But then they became more and more shady.  You could see that more of their decisions were becoming slanted towards "good business" at the expense of customer satisfaction/preference.  There's nothing wrong with that per se, but it does tend to rub people the wrong way, especially in the software world.

They do make good software, though.  I still haven't found a better alternative.  I'm hoping someone will eventually come along that does it better with a better attitude.

Who in their right mind spends $50 a year to host a movie collection? Well, good luck to them... :-\
I know.  That's insane.  I like Collectorz software, but that's no good.  I'd have to be buying a hell of a lot of movies (like mulitple DVD's per week) to justify spending money for a $50/year catalog database.

Direct folder seems to be a commercial program.
Direct Folders is freeware.  You get additional features for the Pro version.  These features are not that big a deal for most people.  Did you read my review?
4470
You're the man Innuendo!  i appreciate it a lot.  i am also a packrat, I haven't thrown an email away since 1997.
4471
Just be aware that some versions of Windows have a bug that if you switch your drive controllers to AHCI that although Windows will go through the motions and ask you for new drivers and what-not the drives won't actually be in AHCI mode as these buggy Windows versions will 'forget' to change the necessary bits in the registry and that'll all have to be done by hand if you want your drives to be in AHCI mode.

I had a friend who bought an eSATA enclosure and wanted to you the hot-swap feature if I am remembering correctly. His PC had been set up in compatibility mode & he needed to change to AHCI mode for everything to work right. It was an adventure of discovery for him.

I'll check later and see if I still have his old emails on the subject, but I do definitely recall it wasn't a "change the setting in your BIOS, reboot, and your fixed" kind of deal.
Geez, I had no idea this was such an involved process.  i was hoping for plug and play.

4474
Thanks 4wd!  I will have to try that this weekend.  I'm tired now and don't feel like doing all that.  I've saved the instructions.
4475
Thanks fodder.  I've been reading that now on the web, but your explanation is much clearer.  So should I go through the work and switch everything to AHCI?

I have an option for AHCI or RAID.  I have no intention of having a RAID array, but should I switch the setting to that?  Or should I leave my setting as Disabled?  Or should I choose AHCI?  From what I've read, I should do AHCI because it takes advantage of hot swapping.
