General Software Discussion / Re: mac icons
« Last post by Renegade on November 04, 2012, 07:13 PM »
The platform for creating the graphics doesn't really matter. You can create the same things on Windows or Linux.

Macs tend to have a much stronger focus on design rather than functionality. If you look at the same application on a Mac or on Windows, you'll often find that the Mac applications are much prettier, and more responsive. This is particularly true for animations on a Mac - they are far nicer than on Windows. Same goes for animations on an iPad versus on Android - iPad animations are much nicer and smoother.

I find that everything take much longer to get done on a Mac, but during that time, you are really forced to pause a bit more. That slowing down sort of gives you time to stop and smell the flowers, if you'll permit me to bastardize that metaphor. So it kind of makes sense that if everything is tortuously slow to get done, it might as well be beautiful while you're doing it. Kind of like giving you a headache and then some morphine to deal with it. :D

But Photoshop or any capable image editor will let you do the exact same thing as the graphics you typically see on Mac sites. It's really more about the designer than about the platform. You'll also see the same kind of graphics on a lot of non-Mac sites. The Mac sites tend to be more consistent with some design elements that they use that are common in the Mac platform.

Found Richard Stallman's archives. :)

http://www.stallman....ect_him_from_himself)

A friend said this reminded him of a joke, "Save police time — beat yourself up."

That is one of the rare times you'll ever read the word "police" there. Mr. Stallman has a different word that he uses: Thug. :P

None of the ISPs are expected to give in without a fight.

Perhaps throwing everyone involved onto a battlefield with swords and shields would solve this once and for all. Mind you, I would expect CIAPC to be outnumbered a bit. :P

And @Renegade, yes, I do see that a lot of what David Icke says makes sense. This "ISP Piracy" nonsense is an example of what he was on about - Fascism. The rightsholders seem to want to have us all in a straightjacket where we get force-fed exactly what they want to feed us, when they want to, and we will have to pay them for the privilege every time.

Regarding David Icke - He rants like Hell about fascism, and a lot more. One of the reasons that I like him. :) He is utterly scathing in his tongue lashings of the media.

The rightsholders seem to want to have us all in a straightjacket where we get force-fed exactly what they want to feed us, when they want to, and we will have to pay them for the privilege every time.

Related there - Icke would say "we pay for our own enslavement". However, he's far from alone in making that characterization (in a few contexts).

I didn't try to answer my own question, but I have just read where Rick Falkvinge answers it for me - and very cogently, it seems: Why SOPA-supporting news networks don't mention SOPA.

Excellent read.

Falkvinge is just one badass site with non-stop, blow your mind, amazing stuff.

(Off-topic - @Iain - I said in another thread that you probably wouldn't like David Icke, but if you like Falkvinge, you'll probably like some of what Icke has to say as a lot of the underlying premises line up.)

Wait, you just solved it! Play Gangnam Style to all RoboCalls until they hang up!  ;D

Hahahahaha~!

A far simpler and easier solution! We have a winner~! :P

For those that actually like the song, there's always this. :P (You KNOW that you're curious...)

^Code it in poorly written Java while you're at it. Make sure it hangs or crashes every third time it runs. ;D

Hmmm... I think we could get this done pretty quick! 50/50 on the $50,000 sound good to you? ;D

This is the first I've heard about the Classes for trademarks, so that's informative. Probably the same thing was going on with Apple Music via the Beatles vs Apple Computer way back when.

I kind of wonder if Apple learned their litigious nature from Apple. :P

Hahahaha~!

You KNOW that people are slowly waking up when a more-or-less mainstream news source cites RT.

Trust? Spooks? Just how brain damaged do they think people are?

These people are responsible for countless crimes including drug trafficking, murder, assassinations, toppling foreign governments, installing puppet regimes, etc. etc. And they want people to trust them?

Reading through their logic, it's just one bit of insanity after another.
4463
You didn't... you did... dude, some things are better left mouldering in ageless sleep, never to glimpse the clear light of day for eons to come, some things should die and stay dead.  Why, Ren?  Why?  What madness has possessed you to awaken this vile stain on good taste?  There will be consequences, you can be sure of that...

Hahahahaha~! ;D

So, you saw it then?

C'mon... When you're like 7 years old or so, Wookies are fun no matter what. ;D Well, provided they aren't ripping your arms off...  :'(

"Remix videos are thriving on YouTube and other sites, offering dynamic criticism and commentary on popular movies as well as popular culture. It's a great example of how new technologies foster free expression, yet the anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA endanger these important works," said McSherry. "We're thrilled that the Copyright Office broke new ground in protecting remix artists. We can't let misguided federal law block a new form of art and expression."

That's excellent! :D

A lot of documentaries out there remix various other sources to comment on and explain things. Good to see that sanity has won a battle at long last!

I do not believe that the problem can ever be "solved", but only "tamed" somewhat.)

I do have a very nasty solution though... Diabolical if I might say...

I like your style!

Ooops! I forgot one thing... for the terms & conditions web page, add in a nasty CAPTCHA that takes at least 5 tries for a human to get right. With every CAPTCHA being a paragraph instead of a word. :D

I have 2 physical KVMs - 1 two-port and 1 4-port, but it's not like Macs actually have inputs that you can use. So, no go there. Also, I don't need MOAR cables laying around.

Still, so far it seems ok. Which I find is the biggest problem with most tech - getting it to work initially is 90% of the problem.
4469
This just makes me smile. :D

http://www.techdirt....ademark-mexico.shtml

When it comes to trademark bullies, Apple is one of the more prolific muscle-flexers in the arena. For some time now, they've been known to be extremely aggressive over their trademarks. From the idea of having an apple in a company's logo, to the name of one's store for mobile applications, all the way to how you offer their products in your own company's contests, Apple defends their marks the way a jealous puppy defends a rawhide.

That's why, while we may agree that aggressive trademark enforcement is at times overblown and unnecessary, it's really rather fun to watch Apple have the trademark stick wrestled from their grips and get beaten over the head with it, such as when Mexico invalidates their use of the "iPhone" mark in commerce within their country. And just in time for Christmas, too! The following is a wonderful story about how a Mexican telecom company already had a mark for iFone, but even more interesting is the long history Apple has of arrogantly bullying everyone else over their attempt to validate the iPhone mark.

Oh. Dear. Gawd.  Did that really air!? It's not a brilliant spoof?

Not a spoof. It aired. And I absolutely loved it at the time~! :D (I begged and begged my mom & dad to let me see Star Wars, but no dice. So, a free holiday special was certainly better than nothing. Especially when you're just a little kid.)

Does anyone remember seeing this the one and only time it aired?

Hehehehe~!

Developer's Corner / Re: FTC to give $50,000 for robocall solution
« Last post by Renegade on November 03, 2012, 02:29 AM »
The solution will involve serious privacy implications. Because an intelligent solution would be outright rejected. e.g. Limit on number of calls you can make, perhaps? Nobody needs to make a call every 10~15 seconds for prolonged periods.

Except for perhaps, at home or office collection agencies, political advertisers, pollsters, real estate agents, tax-exempt marketers (Red Cross, ACS, ADA, etc etc etc).  As much as I'd like to see even these stopped, under the law they can still market legally and aren't affected by the DNC registry.....

Depends. No *HUMAN* needs to make calls that often. Any desk where a human is has no real need to make calls every 10 seconds. Except for marketers... Whatever they are peddling is pretty much irrelevant - they're still trying to hock something off on you. Whether it's "please help the *children*" or "please buy my vacuum".

The solution is very simple - throttle call volumes. Make it impractical to run a call center (that calls out).

And quite honestly, if some advertising call center goes broke, who cares? They hire people for a pittance anyways, so they're not providing decent employment in any event.

ISPs already do this exact same thing.

"Get UNLIMITED high-speed downloads for only $59.95 per month!" = Once you've used up 100 GB of traffic (up or down), we drop you from 2 Mbps to 160 kbps.

Spam is spam. Whether it's in your physical mailbox, email inbox, or on your phone. They're spammers.

UCE - Unsolicited Commercial Email --> Unsolicited Commercial Phone Calls -- Is there any significant difference? I don't think so.

As for the Red Cross, or political parties or collection agencies... What makes what they're doing different from what spammers do? I really don't see any difference at all.

They all boil down to one thing - they want your money or they want *something* from you.

Throttle. Make it impractical to run a business based on spam.

It won't completely solve the problem, but it would certainly make a large dent in the problem. (I do not believe that the problem can ever be "solved", but only "tamed" somewhat.)

I do have a very nasty solution though... Diabolical if I might say...

Diabolical solution
For all phone calls, intercept the call and play a message that states that the call they are making is subject to "terms and conditions" (or an "agreement") and that those terms and conditions can be read at some URL that's rather long, complicated, and annoying. e.g.

http://92634sfdneith...cgnvdsghe=4o8fhneife

Force the caller to choose to accept the terms to make their call, or simply hang up if they don't.

If they accept, forward the call on as normal.

In the terms and conditions, utterly and completely rape the caller as hard as possible. Charge the b'jeez out of them with the maximum legal interest rate calculated and compounded by the yoctosecond (10^-24). Record everything. In the terms/agreement, make them surrender all rights to arbitration, or any rights at all - get draconian, brutal, imaginative is a seriously evil way, etc. etc. etc. Make them your slave for eternity. i.e. Pretend that you're a lawyer/politician/bankster. :P ;D

That was great! :)

Watch the video first - this is a spoiler
