General Software Discussion / Re: Selector 3.4.0.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 23, 2012, 04:46 PM »
Selector 3.4.0.0 Enhanced the Go Button to handle multiple selections. For example, you could select 4 lines of text with a web address on each line, hit Selector hotkey, then select a browser from your program list.  All 4 addresses would be passed to the browser on the command line with a space between each.

Any param that has a space embedded, will be wrapped in double quotes.
XP and later I think the command line is limited to 8191 total characters.
But that should still be good enough to open 4 or 5 files or web sites in one shot.

edit: I tried the multiple url thing with chromium, firefox and opera. Worked with all three.
Also EditPadLite7 will let you specify several files on the command line and open them in tabs.

How each app handles multiple command line args is dependent on the particular app. The app may have a "single instance" setting that would tell it to open files in tabs instead of separate windows... same for browsers.

I haven't played around with hidden icons. But I know there's an icon cache.  Also there's a registry setting that would allow you to increase the cache. It could be that if the icons are hidden they are not cached. But that's just conjecture on my part.

I know there's a tutorial on Windows Seven forum to increase the icon cache. Someone there should know about the hidden desktop icons. You may want to try the Customization subforum. Many of the customizers have had a lot of experience with explorer, desktop and limitations of the system. As example just changing the background color of the Explorer window is not trivial. One of the guys there made me an Aero Theme just to do it(I set the background Antique White to get rid of the "glare" when contrasted with the black desktop background used with fractal flames.)

A quick thing to try would be disabling AV shields, if running. Those things interfere with the system more than anything.
4454
Okis I will remain with the program you put above and have no problems.

Sorry I couldn't fix it up for you. I'm glad you like the idea of the program anyway. :)

To navigate thru folder in stack, hold CTRL when you click on it (for now, you can’t go back).
-Standalone Stacks 2

-this sounds to me like two disadvantages. Why isn't it?  :tellme:

I don't use the option to have Explorer open the stack folder. Turn that option off. Just left click a stack to open it. I have double height Taskbar so that I can fit more Tray Icons on the right, but I only use about 3/4 of the top row of the taskbar for icons because I have 8 Stacks pinned. Stuff I use incessantly like chromium and EditPadLite I have pinned. But about half the Taskbar icons are stacks. Here's a screen shot

taskbar.png

It's an old screen shot. But basically what I did was make a folder of shortcuts that I use the most from each category of programs.  The Tools Icon on Taskbar is system utilities, the Disc media stuff like DVD Shrink, Imgburn, the Edit is text editors/word processors, and I have an edit icon with colors in it for graphical editors, the Key is hotkey apps, the globe Net apps etc..

Here's the current desktop with the Globe Stack open:

Desktop.jpg
4456
HomeFolder 2.3 I added OS 64 bit detection and system language detection to the startup code. If 64 bit OS or Windows has a system language other than US, UK, AUS, or CAN English, the utility terminates.
4457
I haven't tried True Launch Bar, but I like Standalone Stacks 2.  I can easily make a stack from a folder full of categorized shortcuts. It uses the same library that RocketDock stacks uses. It's been pretty smooth on both 64 bit Vista and 32 bit W7.
4458
One thing you could try instead of hidden shortcuts on the desktop, put all your shortcuts into a folder, say Apps or whatever you want to name it.  Drag it into MyDocuments.  A Move from the desktop so now your desktop is clean.  Right click on Taskbar, then Toolbar, the New Toolbar.  Navigate in My Documents and select the folder. Now you have a ">>" on the Toolbar.

I'm thinking maybe whatever hides the desktop shortcuts may be clashing.

I did the above but I don't like mouse hover menu. So I dragged the individual subfolders onto RocketDock and made a custom icon for each category of programs.

Since I have nothing to test it on, I repeat, I cannot support Unicode non English Windows systems. I've marked the utility on my site as:

(XP and later : 32 bit English Language Windows only)

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html
4460
Try this one

This is why I didn't want to open Unicode can of worms. I only have English language Windows for testing. So I'm afraid if this doesn't do it, there's nothing I can do.

Also if you are running a 64 bit version of Windows, Explorer will be located in a Folder that's shielded by redirection from 32 bit programs.  HomeFolder is 32 bit and will be run under SysWow64 emulator.

I'm sorry but these programs are written "for my own use" and shared with those who can use them. A bug or something fixable I will try to correct it. But that doesn't include purchasing multiple language copies of Windows and installing them to support give-away utilities. It's beyond my capacity.

edit: I just tried it on a 64 bit system. I get the same error. But it works when used on a window from a 32 bit program. I should add code to screen out Explorer windows. There's really no point in going to the "home folder" of an explorer window anyway.

Sorry about the Unicode thing.  But I'm lucky if I can eat to the end of each month. I'm in no shape to buy software.

4461
I have no way to test it. Looks like it's not for you.
4462
HomeFolder_IconInst.exe is supposed to be in the same folder as HomeFolder.exe.  That's what contains the icons. However, the new version should not try to load the icons if it cannot run HomeFolder_IconInst.exe and any of the icons are missing. It should just show the Tray Menu plain.
4463
It should have been fixed.  Try the latest download. I also changed the folder open to use the ShellExecute system call and display the error if it fails. I just uploaded.

Version 2.2
4464
Just to be clear, when you say "toolbar for the desktop" do you mean you have about 100 icons on the desktop? Or some special toolbar? I don't use funky desktop buttons so sorry if it's obvious to everyone else. :)

edit: btw if you run a real time av shield try disabling it to see if the icons load in spiffy fashion. :)
4465
You may try this solution:
http://www.sevenforu...n-cache-rebuild.html

Even if it doesn't work, it shouldn't hurt anything. But I would make a restore point just to be cautious.
4466
I'm not sure what you mean. Folders open but show no contents?

If the correct folder opens and doesn't show anything inside I don't know what I can do.  The program calls Run built-in function with the folder path. It's the system that opens the folder.

If it's something else please clarify.

edit: I compiled another copy that calls ShellExecuteA or ShellExecuteW depending on unicode. Please try it:

4467
I don't know the answer.  But it sounds like a good question for this forum:

A lot of MS MVP types hang out on that board.

OneKey 1.9.0.0 Updated Tray Menu Icon handling.
4469
Nice to know MilesAhead

Please download latest, 2.11.  I fixed a bug with Tray Menu Icon handling. Now if the program cannot restore missing tray icons, it does not attempt to load them in the tray menu.

General Software Discussion / Re: Quotidian Folders 1.4.0.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 18, 2012, 03:36 PM »
Quotidian Folders 1.4.0.0 Now includes a separate exe for embedded Tray Menu Icons. If QF detects any missing icons on startup, it calls QF_IconInst.exe to self extract the tray icons. This saves a small amount of memory.  QF.exe does not have to contain the embedded icons while sitting in the tray.
4471
Home Folder 2.1 I broke out a separate program, HomeFolder_IconInst.exe, to extract the Tray Menu Icons for Home Folder. This makes HomeFolder.exe a bit smaller sitting in the tray.  When HomeFolder.exe starts it looks in the folder it is in, for the necessary icons. If any are missing, it runs HomeFolder_IconInst.exe to self extract them.

General Software Discussion / Re: Url Pack 1.4.0.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 17, 2012, 09:47 PM »
Url Pack 1.4.0.0 Added a separate program that stores the Tray Menu icons. On startup if UrlPack doesn't find all the icons it expects in the working directory(the folder where UrlPack.exe is) it will try to launch UrlPack_IconInst.exe.

This just makes UrlPack.exe a bit smaller. UrlPack_IconInst.exe is only run when needed.  UrlPack.exe sits in the tray.  Seems like to good idea to make it as small as possible short of using exe compression.

Since it only takes a few minutes to create an icon installer I'm going to use this scheme with AHL_L apps that have tray menu icons.

General Software Discussion / Re: Selector 3.3.5.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 16, 2012, 05:19 PM »
Selector 3.3.5.0 Updated OS version detection.  Windows Seven transparency should now work on W8 as well as W7.  Added a checkbox for cases when selected or clipboard text has more than one item. An example would be selecting multiple files in Explorer.  In 3.3.4.0 I called it Multiple Launch but I changed it in this update to Loop Launch as that's more accurate. You may still only select one program from the list, but it may be launched in a loop using the Loop Launch checkbox.

In the example of multiple files selected in Explorer, a multi-tab editor may be used to display each file in a tab.  There's a delay option in the .ini file to set the length of the delay after the initial instance of the app is launched.  Setting to 0 disables the delay.  See the Readme.txt file for details.

Another update.  When the program writes the options to the .ini file, if the ini already exists it is first erased.  This should clean up old options that have been changes, blank lines etc..

Got rid of fade on Selector Gui close. With the Loop delay it could have negative side effects.
