A little off topic, I know; but only a little,... I need to ask for an advice:

I NEVER use my computer for gaming, but I have not been able to figure out what services,  if any,  to disable,  in order to free a little more memory. Directions, please?

Found Deals and Discounts / Start Menu 7 Pro giveaway
« Last post by Curt on April 20, 2010, 04:53 AM »
The brand new Start Menu 7 Pro is being given away for free today by Denys Nazarenko @ http://www.giveawayo...om/start-menu-7-pro/

If you don't know about Denys and his excellent start menu alternatives, this is a fine & free way to do so.
However, if you, like me, already have a license for Vista Start Menu Pro:

This post from the developer of today's Giveaway might be helpful if you are already running Vista Start Menu Pro.

    Hi,

Programs the same. Please continue use VSM since if you switch to Start Menu 7 your lost all settings since registry path and file path is diffident in both program.

So exists only 2 reason to switch to Start Menu 7
You don’t like name – Vista Start Menu
    AND
You has new clear system without VSM

The Start Menu 7 clone was created to attract more people since the word 'Vista' not so popular as before. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

The point is that Vista Start Menu Pro is quite fine, and if Start Menu 7 Pro really is the same program with just another name, then today is a very good chance to get a fine program.

I will like to mention that if 'you' ever purchase a copy of Easeus Data Recovery Wizard you will need to have the order ID ready each time you want to APPLY for an updating file.

it might turn out to be a lot better and maybe even cheaper just to buy a modern computer...

1: Agreed, a thread split is probably advisable. Incidentally I did take advantage of the "pay what you want" sale - $20 - mostly on the basis of how nice and informative the dev is. :)

Me too! Of course, I also purchased Helicon Filter when it was on BDJ  :-[

Wow - I am SO surprised!  (Kidding! You know you're my software hero!)   ;) ;D

General Software Discussion / Outpost 7 BETA-testers wanted
« Last post by Curt on April 17, 2010, 05:38 AM »
OUTPOST 7 BETA
Public Beta Testing Is Underway

Join our open beta testing for the upcoming Outpost Security Suite, Outpost Firewall Pro and Outpost Antivirus Pro 7.0 and you can help us improve the products and ensure that they will meet your needs!

Whether you’re already a member of our beta-testing community or not, Agnitum invites you to participate in the public testing of our soon-to-be-released 7.0 product line. We’ve listened to your feedback on previous versions and have been working hard to improve the software with the addition of these new, exciting features — just to name a few:

New!       Application guard New!
The new Application Guard feature, which comes as an upgrade to Outpost’s Proactive Protection module, defends sensitive data stored by various Internet-enabled applications such as instant messengers, web browsers, e-mail clients and e-banking software from compromise. Items such as cached/saved login details and passwords, configuration files, electronic wallet contents, etc. are now shielded from being tampered or hijacked by unauthorized non-related applications.

Improved!       System guard Improved!
As an extension to Outpost’s Proactive Protection module, the System Guard feature secures critical system files and configurations against misuse or compromise. The list of protected items could be extended by adding the program of your choosing to the protected system software list.

New!       File and folder lock New!
File & Folder Lock functionality enables protection of locally-stored assets from corruption, modification or illegal access by other users or malware. With just a few clicks within the “File and Folder Lock” section of the Proactive Protection settings panel in Outpost, you can simply select a folder or file you wish to protect and set limitations by defining access password.

New!       Real-time File and Registry Activity monitoring New!
File and Registry Activity provides an invaluable opportunity to look into system events at a closer range by monitoring activity of any given active process and tracking system changes in real time. The user can analyze every active process, its path and time as well as track registry modifications in order to take action with Outpost’s ample functionality.

Improved!       Antivirus module Improved!
The antivirus engine has been improved with new detection and cure capabilities. Besides, the Quarantine component has been reworked to become more actionable — it’s now easier to decide upon suspicious objects. Agnitum’s heuristic analyzer, part of Antimalware, has been updated to ensure efficient monitoring of autostarted objects’ behavior on system start-up.

New!       Restored Content Filter New!
Legacy of Outpost 4.0, Content Filter has been restored in the new version of Outpost. The module analyzes web contents for the presence of defined keywords before a certain page is loaded, and steers the user away from suspicious or abusive sources on the Internet.

Improved!       Extended Anti-Leak capabilities Improved!
New types of data leak techniques have been incorporated into Outpost’s Proactive Defense module to ensure up-to-date protection against new attacks employed in zero-day threats. The module’s effectiveness has been proved by successfully deterring new malware samples and passing existing leak tests.

Improved!       Update process Improved!
Whenever updates to the main antivirus engine (executable module) become available, they will be automatically applied without the need for user participation (providing, of course, for system reboot). This ensures latest protection is always in place without any hassles from the user’s end.

Improved!       Stability on new platforms Improved!
The introduction of new standards to the Outpost 7 lineup make it better compatible and stable running on the new Windows 7 platform, with fewer occurrences of slowdowns and interoperability issues. These changes make Outpost even better positioned to meet the future arrival of new Windows OS.

Improved!       User interface with a facelift Improved!
The interface changes were designed to reflect the modern Windows 7 look and provide better visibility of product notifications. Redesigned setting panels make program configuration more intuitive.

General Software Discussion / Oops, I won a Adobe Flash Builder by mistake!
« Last post by Curt on April 15, 2010, 06:44 PM »
I vaguely remember that some months ago I saw an advert promising me a chance to get a flash builder for free from Adobe. I was probably thinking YouTube flash movies, flash animations, or something, so I clicked Yes Please, and forgot about it.

Now I have received my price... yeah wouldn't you know it; if I NEED it, I don't win, but if it is useless to me, I win! Oh dear, oh dear; this is WAY over my head. Adobe Flash Builder 4 Standard does *not* build "flash movies" or "animations"; it builds applications! I will have to CODE, to use it!! (who said "ha-ha!"?) And just to rub salt into 'your' wound: I have registered it; no one else can get it instead. It is lost.

-or is it?

Is there any way 'we', the DonationCoder community can save it and make it become useful?
Or is it really  lost  lost?  :tellme:

----------
The downloaded file is 380MB but is just a container-exe and can be broken down into a lot of reasonable sized files. The installer itself is merely 793KB.

242 pages HELP.pdf splitted into 3 pdf.zip files:
1:3 * flashbuilder_help_1.zip (6281.2 kB - downloaded 362 times.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Executable Compressor Programs
« Last post by Curt on April 15, 2010, 11:17 AM »
I use EXECryptor to protect and compress  (....)
(...) anyway, for these reasons i'd never use execryptor.

Mail from Agnitum support because of my complaint against false positives:

Dear Curt,

Thank you for your message.

These files are detected as suspicious because they are packed by a packer widely appreciated by malware authors (Execryptor), but the files themseves are clean. You can add them to program exclusions by right-clicking on them in the scanning results window.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The Photo Studio Professional 12 program is okay, but people should know that the Zoner site is being totally blocked by Outpost Firewall and Outpost Security Suite. I cannot even get their emails, or update, or follow your link.

I run Outpost Security Suite & I have never been blocked from going to the Zoner site. You must have something else going on over there, Curt.

 :-[

somehow I blocked zoner.com myself, in the IP lists.

General Software Discussion / Re: Video Editing software - Any recommendations?
« Last post by Curt on April 14, 2010, 07:57 AM »
There has been a break in the posting stream in this thread, so I expect we now are done with the zillion dollar programs, or what? Why must I come here for a free or low cost editor and be told that a $600 editor is what I need?

.. I am hoping I can find something that doesn't require a 2 month learning course to understand and hopefully it would also be free or at least cheap.

"Any suggestions?" -as he also were asking.

... there is a very interesting post on 11th April in the Sagelight BLOG.

... why doesn't he mention the names of the programs he compared to? What does he have to lose? It's a factual comparison. There shouldn't be any legal or other problems, should there?

Maybe there is. In Denmark it is not legit for a company to advertise their own test against a competitor.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: FREE Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009
« Last post by Curt on April 13, 2010, 09:49 AM »
I only hear from Ashampoo when they actually have something to tell. As I said, "it worked for me". Their programs are okay, nothing wrong. They are updated constantly; nothing wrong. The major problem is how often these updated are called upgrades, going from one major version to the next major version and "forcing" you to pay for yet another upgrade. That is extremely often, and no longer acceptable to me.

The mails from Rainar Lesani, MrReg, and other addresses I can't remember right now, are truly a PITA. But I don't think Ashampoo cares too much, because the shots seem to never hit any of their own feet; the company is constantly growing.
