General Software Discussion / Re: Configuring Directory Opus for Fun and Profit
« Last post by tomos on November 04, 2013, 01:37 PM »
I'd forgotten this one - cause I never really used it ;-)

I want to keep two panes showing the same location - as I navigate in one -
e.g.
Documents | Documents
on the left pane, I move down to Documents/Expenses - the other panel updates to show the same:
Expenses | Expenses

How to:
under the icon 'Folder Options' => Navigation Lock

Screenshot - 2013-11-04 , 20_22_03.png

currently using it with thumbnails on one side, details on the other. While being able to look at the images, it makes locating files by name much easier. Cant think of other uses off-hand but I'm sure they're there.

Note:
I cant find it in the menu; just checked my laptop, which install is closer to the default version: it's not in the menu there either.
I think everything should be available in the menu - it's easy to edit a toolbar, remove a 'button' and forget it even exists as a capability. I know, I've done it :-\
For things more rarely used, I find it much easier to look through a menu. Because of that, the version 10 update hid a lot of the power of dopus for me - I do find I use the range of that power less than before.

Is this correct? -

You do an image search on google.
You click on an image, an image preview is shown - you want a screenshot of the image preview.

Different images show different sized previews - you want the screenshot to show just the image preview with no (black) background.

Query - if that above is correct, why not just try to save the images?

Screenshot Captor / Re: how to enter text into a text box
« Last post by tomos on November 01, 2013, 11:41 AM »
@beethoven
IIUC, you click on the text icon (tooltip say "Text Object");
you click and drag to create a textbox - at this stage all you have to do is start typing - the text will automatically go in the box, i.e. it has focus. If the focus is elsewhere, a double-click in the textbox will give do the job.

I'm on windows 8 here (for a change). I notice, when I created the textbox, there was a blinking cursor in it - but it was so small it would be easy to miss. Funny I just drew another textbox and I see a full-size blinking cursor... Do you see a blinking cursor?

Hope that helps!

edit// there's actually a couple of really nice tracks (imo) on ^that album "Another View"

Yes, but also a lot of boring stuff ("Andy's Chest", "Coney Island Steeplechase", ...).

yes, "a couple" leaves out, by definition, most of the tracks ;)
But obviously - seeing as I posted it - I didnt and dont find Coney Island Steeplechase boring. It is a minor track, but for me it was an ohrworm and a pleasure to find again. YMOV ('O' for obviously).

Guess you could call that a form of progress, right? :) :(

that was a powerful post.

Re my earlier, eh, reproachful post: sorry folks, I missed the sub-text to the whole medal talk (maybe it was more obvious than a 'sub-text' - but I missed it anyways). Which gave me a skewed perspective of the medal debate...

I loved some of the 'light' stuff from Velvet Underground - VU Lite :)

"Sunday Morning"

at one stage (long time ago), I had a cassette of outtakes and unreleased stuff from the VU (buying cassettes, such a bad idea) anyways, this one always stuck in my head:

"Coney Island Steeplechase" (keeping the days-of-the-week theme)
probably havent heard that one in twenty years...

Ooops... I forgot to add: Fight fire with fire. ;)

I'm not sure what you mean there, but for some reason I had the idea of drinking a lot of liquids, then--if you're a bloke anway--you're prepared in case you meet a fire.
No, I didnt even necessarily mean alcoholic liquids (sober here btw/fwiw).

So, the big question here is about medals....

[edit] about my fifth edit here :-[
Maybe I shouldnt even mention morality here, but, just to be clear: I'm not at all saying that we should be discussing the morality of different aspects of the topic here. Just that the medals discussion is so the other end of the scale... I apologise in advance cause I reckon I will have already offended some people with my response. But I just dont know how else to say it at this moment and time - and I dont want to leave it unsaid. Apart from the above, the debate (medals) doesnt seem to me to fit into the (international) dc community/forum. [/edit]

What if it has less to do with mortality than it does morality?

I agree, but would not use the world 'morality' - morality is, by definition, an intellectual thing. This is not an intellectual response....

Living Room / Re: Does anyone here use Bitcoins?
« Last post by tomos on October 28, 2013, 03:11 PM »
The ... problem is this:

https://en.wikipedia...i/Gresham's_law

Why spend bitcoins when you can get rid of fiat? (This is a general problem.) What I'm thinking is that constantly funnelling fiat into bitcoins then spending that is a good way to preserve value as you avoid fiat inflation and get the advantage of bitcoin's deflation. This becomes easier and easier as more merchants/etc. start accepting bitcoins.

IIUC Gresham's Law would indicate that Bitcoin will be saved and not spent at all - so long as fiat money exists (presuming Bitcoin continues increasing in value). [edit] but yes, your logic is good, so long as bitcoins increase). [/edit]

Interesting to note the couple of paragraphs there about how/why they stopped using silver and other valuable metals to make coins (with silver in the US, a chicken/egg scenario could be argued).
4263
^ in order to say that this is a problem with CHS, you would have to see if the problem occurs without ClipMate running. See mouser's comment:

sometimes clipboard tools misbehave and prevent others from capturing.

They are already heavily regulated.

cant let that part of your response go:
yes, naturally, it's the *type* of regulation that's important!  I meant the type of regulation that I believe started disappearing with Reagan....

Yeah, there's a bit of a fuss being kicked up by Merkel due to her mobile telephone bing 'tapped'. It will help, but it could have some more 'omph' to it imo.

I'm been following it on the radio. From a google search:
http://www.huffingto...apped_n_4150812.html

The European government complaints are all a bit wishy-washy, due I suppose to the reality that every government is doing it - it's just they're shocked how much the NSA is doing. But they cant state that so baldly in their official complaints, e.g.:
"Guys, we know you like to peek; we like to peek a little too - but guys, this is going, like, *too* far..."

Yet this sounds potentially very good:

Looks like more cracks are forming:

http://thecable.fore...fort_to_restrain_nsa

An effort in the United Nations by Brazil and Germany to hold back government surveillance is quickly picking up steam, as the uproar over American eavesdropping grows.

The German and Brazilian delegations to the U.N. have opened talks with diplomats from 19 more countries to draft a General Resolution promoting the right of privacy on the Internet. Close American allies like France and Mexico -- as well as rivals like Cuba and Venezuela -- are all part of the effort.

The push marks the first major international effort to curb the National Security Agency's vast surveillance network. Its momentum is building. And it comes as concerns are growing within the U.S. intelligence community that the NSA may be, in effect, freelancing foreign policy by eavesdropping on leaders like Germany's Angela Merkel.

More at the link.

so hopefully that's the 'omph' ;-)

I do understand better now where you're coming from. I also understand a bit better your focus on inflation (which btw is still way down my list of problems - personal or theoretical :-\ unless it is a symptom of something unhelpful, which of course it might well be).

^I'm not arguing about debasing of a currency, and whether that might be a good thing. (1) I dont want to argue it (2) I'm not qualified to do it anyway ;-)

Minimum wage workers in 1964 made about 30% more than minimum wage earners now. *IF* you look at fiat, only.
-
I was thinking more in term of a comparision with 1800 or even 1900 (referencing your quote that money had lost so much value in the last 2 to 300 years). It's easy to cherry pick a very short period of time when average people did reasonably well, and say that's what the world would be like if [xyz]. But I dont see much logic there, nor much to convince me of anything really. I could just as easily argue that times were good then because banks were much more regulated (and we might both be right - or wrong, or it might just be the case that there's an awful lot more going on at any time, than any simple idea/concept can explain).

Minimum wage for 1 hour in quarters in 1964 was about 0.82 troy ounces of silver.
[...]
Today that's worth more than $18.50. (@ $22.60 per ozt)
-
Why do I feel like I'm being cheated when you compare minimum wage in 1964 and today in terms of silver :-\
We've touched on this before (my post in basement thread about greenback dollars). SeraphimLabs claims a deflationary model is unstable (second post @ the link above). I dont know about his qualifications, but you didnt respond directly. As I say I'm not qualified to talk about it, but off the top of my head, if money was related to, say, silver, and silver was increasing in value all the time, then wages would probably have to be reduced proportionately, otherwise companies would go bust. Not sure that would go down too well...

I know that you know a lot about the flaws in fiat money Ren. But I get the impression that you dont know a whole lot more about economics than I do, yet you seem so very sure about your ideas. That sets off alarm bells for me. No offence intended - it's the ideas I'm on about ;)
