Living Room / Re: Am I the only one who finds the new Apps-based world boring?

Well if more people were thinking the same then there would be more viable alternatives. Clearly more people read a book or listen to music or play games than draw up databases and write long essays.  :P All this doesn't stop you doing that though, just not on those devices.

Living Room / Researcher Claims 'Evercookie' Can't Be Removed
« Last post by justice on September 23, 2010, 10:22 AM »
Evercookie takes a shotgun approach to cookie creation, in the hopes of maintaining persistence on endpoints. In addition to creating a standard HTTP cookie, Evercookie stores client specific information in other locations that are accessible by most common Web browsers including local shared objects (LSOs) created by Adobe's Flash technology. It also leverages a number of HTML extensions introduced with HTML5, the newest specification for the Web's main authoring language. HTML5 Session Storage, HTML5 Local Storage and HTML5 Global Storage are all leveraged to store cookie data. HTML5's new Canvas tag is used to read cookie data stored in the RGB values of PNG format files.

Living Room / Re: Tipping - Why does this appear to be a "requirement"?
« Last post by justice on September 17, 2010, 04:49 AM »
why would you serve worse if you get more basic pay? Less worries and it's not people will stop tipping.

Did you not see the above commentary on service in Europe?
Yes and I disagree with that statement, one waiter in london is not proof of london, a country or a continent. it's just an experience of a moment in time by one person in one day.

As a European perhaps someone can enlighten me what the word minimum means in the term minimum wage if an establishment is allowed to pay less than that? Perhaps, take away the tips and make the portions smaller accordingly?

I find the similar function in Safari produces an easier to read page than the Readability extension so if you haven't tried it give that a go too, really good for instruction articles on adpacked sites. I have it installed just for this.

Living Room / Copy and paste workflow tip
« Last post by justice on August 12, 2010, 07:41 AM »
If you copy and paste a lot of information this workflow might be useful for you. It makes my work a lot easier.

You will need:

Using your mouse software, set the first side button to Copy (ctrl-c) and the second button to Paste (ctrl-v). Now set the hotkey of your clipboard monitoring program's popup to ctrl-alt-v. You already use the mouse to select text to be copied so this saves you a lot of time. As a result you can copy and paste text between windows quickly using just the mouse. You can also quickly copy multiple items in succession and use ALT + side button 2 to bring up the list of copied items with minimum effort.

An improvement to this solution would be if you could use a quick press to paste and a long press to invoke the clipboard program, and not needing the keyboard. However MS intellitype invokes ctrl-v on RELEASE and not on press, so I cannot built an autohotkey script to check how long the key is pressed down.

Hope you'll find this useful.

BTW, i'm happy to turn this into a general workflow tips - there's always many articles on individual pieces (hotkeys, programs) but not enough on a nice solution that consist of a total workflow.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 :: Entry Ideas
« Last post by justice on August 05, 2010, 04:11 AM »
I have an idea: a personal spending habit report tool.
Now that Wesabe is gone, I'm looking for an app where you can tag, catagorize and report on your spending and income using exported bank statements from online banking sites. So you import a series of bank statements, catagorize them and report so you see via graphs where your money goes and how spending habits have changed. It would be an app that would have a big market.

what was great about wesabe for me was that it recognised similar lines in bank statements so the second time you shop at shop x it would already catagorize that line for you.

Realizing now that if you need 1 hour presentation to introduce a program it's conceptually too complex. Because you can do everything you can use Wave for with other services/software (but not as easy) perhaps there was not enough reason to learn it. It had a lot of promise but unfortunately never made it to a desktop app level of polish for me . But mostly, I think it's beaten by facebook, as a communication tool. Perhaps with a popular google social network behind it it would have extended the lifespan.

It wasn't clear from your posts mark but perhaps you have already considered these:
Perhaps you could host the files on dropbox, google docs/ google sites (they accept all files now), ms skydrive, find a hosting sponsor, amazon s3 even, + offer it as a torrent to alleviate hosting costs. You could then redirect (with the help of the dcmembers sysadmin if desired) using htaccess the download link to the new location. Less costs and no missing files.

hope that helps and good luck in the future

General Software Discussion / Experiences selling digital downloads?
« Last post by justice on August 04, 2010, 04:49 AM »
Hi, I'm thinking to setup a small shop selling digital downloads for change (think app store prices). I'm looking into the whole distribution question (paypal helps you setup the buy buttons but that does not make the download securely available).  Initially I was hoping to integrate it all in my existing website, but now I'm considering a secure download area - but not looking for a ecommerce shop, just an easy to use solution that takes care of the from payment onwards part of the process. Was thinking of using paypal but these solutions also charge a hefty sum which means not much money left, so this is a problem for me too.

Does anyone have any experience in such things and could give me some pointers?

Found the stuff below in case others are looking for it:
https://cms.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=developer/solutions_dgd
DigiVendor - seems like an interesting candidate.
Prestashop - an open source solution
Brad Sucks Digital Download Store - Found a solution written by an artist looking for someting similar primarily focused on digital downloads, checking it out right now.

Finished Programs / Re: ReRun - Run a program repeatedly on hotkey
« Last post by justice on August 04, 2010, 03:53 AM »
No problem, it's one of these programs that is not apparently useful until you're in the situation where you have to constantly check something, like website design (use rerun in combination with Frep to replace certain variables and FtpSync to upload the files to your website with the press of a key.
