Thanks, I was just curious. Mine is a WD Caviar Black 1TB which some folks report as loud while others report as very quiet. I don't know if that's due to individual differences, WD quality control, or both. In any event, the HD checks out OK with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics.

+1. Max, please don't limit portability to U3 smart drive only.

...I bought a couple of Caviar Black drives...

Sorry to briefly stray off-topic, but MilesAhead I would surely like to know if your HDs are loud. I recently purchased a Caviar Black which I only use occasionally (thankfully) for backup and mine is uncommony loud.

Hi Max, I also like MultiFind and have mentioned it here at DC before. The multi-tabbed interface and optional context menu integration are very nice features.  8)

The newest Index Your Files (version 5) also deserves a mention. I'm not suggesting it's better than Everything or Locate32, but I like that it's portable and can display/view media files in its built-in viewer.

I would agree AVStoDVD provides a smoother overall experience than HCbatchGUI. While its nice to have the opportunity to change any setting (in the advanced GUI of HCbatchGUI), its also nice to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. HCbatchGUI reminds me of years ago when I used Gordian Knot (long before AutoGK emerged) to convert to DivX--settings galore!

Also, both AVStoDVD and the HC encoder have been updated more frequently in recent months. 8)

Seems like the typical January wait-til-next-year "story". Most of the time these journalistic seers exaggerate a trend and really miss the mark.

Kinda reminds me of TV weathermen. Rarely do we see them come back the next day and say "Man, was I ever wrong with that prediction!" ;D

Looks like AudioGrabber has been free for a while (Feb '04), but I didn't realize it is now abandonware. AG's website is gone, but it can still be found at CNET and other download sites.

Personally, I never had any reason to use anything other than EAC with its superior secure ripping mode. I'll take a look at dBpoweramp as well. :)

Thanks for the notice, folks. Why do these companies risk ruining their reputation with this kind of crap? How can the short-term $$ possibly be worth the long-term damage to their reputation? I just don't get it.

FWIW BonkEnc (new to me) is a free audio converter and CD ripper which is currently well-regarded. Could be worth a look. 8)

Yep, EAC is the best ripper-- especially if you have a scratched CD. Other free tools like CDex and Audiograbber reportedly get the job done as well.

Hello Umberto. :)

Have you considered adding a SpaceSniffer context menu entry (optional) for convenient scanning of folders?

Many years ago I used EasyLAME which was a pre-configured RazorLAME-- alt-preset-standard (VBR).

Though I haven't encoded mp3s in many years, I would probably try Pazera's freeware LAME Front-End if I were to get started on a mp3 collection today.

Good news indeed. 8) But I have to admit to some confusion-- did you mean the newest 3.43 beta? :tellme:

If you go in the 3.43 beta forum, there's a thread with the link to the 64 bit download.  The thread title mentions 64 bit.  The link is in the first post.

Yep, got it--that's what I figured you meant. You typed 3.34 (a 32 bit version), but after I caught up on my sleep I was pretty sure you meant 3.43. In retrospect, sorry for the dumb question.

NCH Software's hard marketing strategy and online installation methods make me think "adware" instead of "freeware". Anyway, it was certainly annoying-ware to me.

When I tried their VideoPad some while back (probably 6-8 months ago), without permission the shell extension "convert to" was placed in the registry for several file types such as .jpg, .avi, .mpg, etc. As you mentioned, the shortcuts to all their software placed in the Start Menu is annoying as well.

Not the end of the world, but they could have at least asked before taking over. I honestly don't know if there's more to it than aggressive marketing, but I promptly uninstalled--didn't have the patience for it. All I know is they didn't pass the good old "sniff test"--something smelled bad to me but I couldn't say exactly "what they were up to".

For those interested in a truly minimalist solution, KoolPlaya is actually a capable video player provided you have the codec support.

It obviously won't be replacing the fully-featured KMplayer or GOM Player on my system, but still I can't resist this little 452 kb executable.

You may want to check out Weather Center (freeware).

Thanks for telling, AbteriX. ReNamer is my favorite file renaming utility, but there's clearly lots I don't know about it. Needless to say, Bulk Rename Utility really overwhelmed me with all its options.

Actually it was a hypothetical just so I can try to understand the concept. :-[ But let's say the file names are all 4 digits beginning with 7--in the range of 7001 and 7100 /.jpgs in the same folder.

General Software Discussion / File Renaming question
« Last post by sajman99 on January 04, 2010, 02:38 PM »
I need help to increment/decrement file names ranging from 7001-7100. Note that I don't have a complete continous set of 7001-7100 but only have some of the files (ie. 7005, 7006, 7009, 7012...).

I like and use both ReNamer and Ken Rename. In both apps there is a serialize mode which allows the user to start at a specific number and then sequence from there, but AFAIK that only works if there is a continuous set of files.

All I want to accomplish is to leave what I already have and decrement everything by a value of 1. So for example, decrementing 7005 becomes 7004, 7012 becomes 7011, etc.

Does anybody know how to accomplish this task with any software? btw I know I can do it manually one file at a time but that takes lots of time when dealing with many files.
