I don't know what the 'duh' is about.
I think just a recognition that the answer was obvious (to check the Mozilla site).

I probably should have drilled down to the specific question that was answered and eliminated the ambiguity.

Nah, you did fine.  Andy was right, I was saying "duh" to myself.

General Software Discussion / Re: Good google toolbar (for Firefox) alternative?
« Last post by superboyac on December 23, 2009, 11:11 PM »
Wide screen does not matter here, as toolbars are mostly horizontal.  :P

I don't expect you to be one of us  ;D, but I thought you actually had a reason to use a separate bar for something you can do well without it.
My only reason is that I like the buttons that i mentioned above.  however, it is kind of redundant.  if I think about it, there are three places on the toolbar where i can enter google searches.  Oh well.  Actually make that two, ask.com has hijacked my location bar and i don't know how to fix it yet.

Aw, crap.  Now Meteo Fusion is giving an error whenever it updates saying "Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

It would be nice if there's was a smart location bar "manager" out there, but i couldn't find one.
There is a bunch of extensions changing the smart location bar in every possible way, depending on what exactly you want...
Really?  I typed "smart bar" in the search at the addon website, and I didn't come up with anything.  I'll try again.

Why do you want to use screenspace-wasting bars for trivial tasks at all?
;D If you are assuming I'm like one of you ultra-minimalist guys, please don't.

Just kidding.  But seriously, I'm not concerned about screen space at all.  I have two 24" wide screen monitors and I have plenty of real estate.  I don't even know what to do with it all.  And I love the screen wasting conveniences like toolbars.  I use a mouse a lot (i.e. I'm not a do everything with keyboard shortcuts guy).   :P

I use Aeris Calendar (http://www.aeriscalendar.com/). I got it for the calendar features but it's nice to have its nice weather monitoring.
That's cool.  I'm very choosy about calendar software also.  Normally, I don't combine two different functions for software unless, in some very unique cases, the software does multiple things very well.  But it's nice when that happens.

For calendars, I like Calendarscope (but hate their licensing policy).  There's also Vueminder, which is very very good (although slower and more sluggish than Calendarscope, and has the same licensing policy).  And Pierre has begun putting a calendar in InfoQube, which I am hoping will turn out to be excellent.

General Software Discussion / How to manage Firefox Smart Location Bar?
« Last post by superboyac on December 23, 2009, 10:00 PM »
I like the Firefox Smart Location Bar, but I often want to tweak what shows up and what doesn't.  More specifically, sometimes you make a typo and now it's in the smart bar, but how do you remove it?  Also, let's say there's an entry in there that you want to tweak slightly?  Like, take this forum for example:  the first time I came here, I used the main page (www.donationcoder.com), but I prefer to come to the forum index.  How do I change it?  It would be nice if there's was a smart location bar "manager" out there, but i couldn't find one.

General Software Discussion / Good google toolbar (for Firefox) alternative?
« Last post by superboyac on December 23, 2009, 09:29 PM »
i was just wondering if there was a good alternative for the google toolbar for firefox?  I don't have a problem with it, but I was curious if there are better ones out there.  The only thing I use on it is the search box, translate, and the word highlighting/word-search buttons.  Again, i have no problem with it.  I just thought maybe people who don't like it use something better.  Sometimes third party developers make cooler things than the original company.

Thanks Stoic.  It's fixed now.

Well!  I like Meteo Fusion a lot!  if anyone cares, meteo gets my nod of approval.  It's simple and gives all the information I care for.  Temperature, forecast, chance of rain, that's pretty much it.  If you don't care about satellite images, realtime updates, etc. (i.e. you are a normal person who is not a career meteorologist) then this is the best program I've come across.  It's free also.

It has a pretty nice system tray icon, and it has a great looking desktop gadget with all the pertinent information.  And the desktop gadget has a great feature which allows you to lock it in place, so when you are clicking around and working, you won't accidentally select it or move it.  Incidentally, this is the same feature I've requested in the past for mouser's launchbar commander (hint, hint!) [although that was before he added the fabulous under-mouse hotkey feature...but I digress].

So, joiwind, great suggestion!  That was clutch!  That's why I love this place.

I think I remember a tool used to uninstall .Net versions.  I used it once at work I think.  OK, I'll look for it.
4213
Geez!  What's going on?  I tried reinstalling .net 2.0 and before it even starts the install process it crashes with a dialog titled "external installer".  What the hell?!  My computer is ruined!
4214
I'm positive I already have .NET 2.0.  Unless they've updated it in the last year.  I'll reinstall and see if that fixes it.

Living Room / Re: Simple problem, is there a simple answer?

The only time I've encountered something similar to this was when I had a virus/malware.  I wrote about it recently here (last couple of months?).  Something disabled every executable on the pc.  It was horrible.  You couldn't run anything.  Your thing sounds different, so it may be that something is broken and not a virus.  You never know.  In my case, I was forced to reinstall the OS.  Pain in the butt.

I just can't tell from your description if it's a virus or not.  It can go either way.  Sorry for not having helpful info!
4216
Same for me, I have tested many of these apps and been disappointed by pretty well all of them for one reason or another.

But, do you know Meteo Fusion ? I am using it all the time now and I'm really pleased with it - give it a try out...
Nice suggestion!  I like the screenshots a lot.  However, I installed it and it keeps crashing all the time.  As soon as I open the options screen, it's crashing continuously.  I'm mad because it looks like just the program I'm looking for.  This is on Windows XP.

If it's one graphics card with two connections, try switching the cables.

If it's two cards, then I'm not sure if you want to switch, depending on the card's abilities.
Yeah, I know.  But I wanted to see if it could be done with some kind of software or tweak.

Best Weather Monitor Tool / There aren't many great choices for weather software
« Last post by superboyac on December 23, 2009, 12:38 PM »
I'm trying to find a good weather software, and I've gone over the ones in our DC review here.  Maybe it's because it's a few years old, but none of those are all that great.

Weatherbug is no good.  It's too busy, and is ad-infested.

Weather Watcher is not freeware anymore.

Weather Pulse was ok, but I had stability issues with it.  And it's ridiculous how the temperature numbers don't fit in the box int he system tray.  I had a real problem closing the winow.  I would keep pressing the close button and it would never close.  So, it's a little buggy in my opinion.

I've tried a few others I've searched the web for:

Accuweather.  It has a very nice, clean interface.  but it's ad-infested (video ads at that!).

Tray Weather Forecast.  This is my favorite of the bunch so far.  It's small, lightweight, simple.  Shows me the temp in the tray, and has a very simple forecast popup window.  All the other programs are very busy.  All I want to know is the temperature, if it's going to rain, and the forecast for the next day or two.  I don't really need anything else.  I'm not trying to analyze wind patterns and all that.  I mean, really.  It's fun, but I don't need it.  So this program was the best for that it seems.  Unfortunately, it's $30 which is ridiculous.  And I don't think it's been updated for a while, although it works fine on my XP system.

So, I just wanted to express my disappointment with this entire genre of software.  This happens occasionally.  Sometimes, one company does their software a certain way, and other companies keep following suit, even though they have no reason to.  They figure the other companies are getting away with it so they do the same.  For example, why does every single DSL company offer annual contracts, and cable companies don't?  There's no reason.  Why do all websites that do hardware reviews have multi-page reviews?  No reason.  Well, there is a reason, they get you to click "next" more and it's better for ads.  But you see how one company does it one way, and then everyone follows suit?  And the part they are copying is inevitably the bad stuff.  Nobody ever copies something that's good about a product.  Only the bad things.  Things that allow more ads, etc.  Nobody ever looks at a program like FARR (eg) and says, "well, this is small, lightweight, free and highly customizable, yet simple.  I will try to do the same!"  No, that doesn't happen.  However, if FARR had a big bar on top with ads on it, you'd see a few copycats also make a launcher with ads on top of it also.  Eventually, people will know that most of the launcher software come with ads on top of it.

I had this problem intermittently for a long time also, and found this solution recently:

http://www.sevenforu...monitor-support.html

"In the screen resolution settings, just grab the monitor and move it to the other side"

No, that doesn't fix it.  I mean, yes, it fixes it in the sense that everything seems to be back to normal.  However, the monitors will then be in the order of 2-1, which i don't like.  i want to actually change the monitor numbering.  Why?  Because many programs remember which monitor they last ran on, and when they switch like this, you have your programs opening on the opposite monitors than you like.  So, the real, ideal fix is to renumber the monitors.
4220
I have a dual monitor setup and every once in a while (I don't know why), the numbering of the monitors gets flipped.  This is a big pain in the but because now I have to redo my settings and go in the display control panel and change everything so that the order (from left to right) is 2-1, where it used to be 1-2.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to reassign what is "1" and what is "2", but I can't find anything for that.  Even if I check settings that say make this monitor "primary" that still doesn't change the monitor's number.  So, any advice on this?

Thanks for the tips, Zaine.

So many things to try!  This will probably be a longer experiment than I anticipated.  So it seems like I have to not only be open to different programs, but to different distros as well.  I may have to use multiple distros to cover all the things I like to do.  What's the most pain free way of switching between distros?  Using virtualization software, or multi-booting, or some way else?

Living Room / Re: How to stop junk [snail] mail?

I usually just send company A's junk-mail to company B, in company C's self-addressed/stamped envelope.

This way I get to waste their time too ;)
Ha!  Funny!
