Living Room / Re: Reach Into Transparent Computer, Grab Content
« Last post by Deozaan on March 12, 2013, 10:48 AM »
It sort of reminds me of the interface on Minority Report, which was a concept that I loved.

How Minority Report trapped us in a world of bad interfaces.

(Emphasis added)

I wish I could get away with charging my clients a fee for every time they say "Minority Report" to me. I’m a commercial artist in L.A., and 90% of commercial art is shutting up and giving the client what they want. That means I spend a lot of time trying to repackage Steven Spielberg’s vision of the future: floating graphical windows with video hovering in them, typography flickering and animating in response to actors’ actions, interfaces appearing and disappearing when fingers reach out to poke them. In short, building a virtual iPad interface, hovering in front of the actor using it. In Spielberg's future, you only have to twirl your fingers at a computer screen to make it do what you want. It looks cool enough, but it's time for us to let it go: we've built our graphics and our electronics around interface eye candy, rather than trying to come up with new and more effective ways to control our real and imaginary gadgets. The best thing you can say about touchscreens are they look good on camera and they’re better than T9 texting, which is kind of like being better than fax machines.

Or it could be as simple as he's enlarged the text by tapping the Control Numpad + key  ;)

Or Ctrl-+ (not on the numpad). Or holding Ctrl while scrolling the mouse wheel.

Yeah. That's what I mean. The video was weird. But I did like the "wings" part. (c:

My guess is that you have some sort of plugin that searches a bunch of search engines. I have Invisible Hand installed and so when I view an item on one site, it will search for the best price on NewEgg, Amazon, Best Buy, etc., which will make it appear in my view history (or whatever) for all those sites, including Amazon, since I tend to leave myself logged in.

Today marked the beginning of the annual 7-Day Roguelike, in which the objective is to program a Roguelike in 7 days (stop coding 168 hours after you started).

You can take a look at all of the games that have been pledged (so far) here: http://7drl.roguetem...om/jsp/viewGames.jsp

DC Gamer Club / Edge of Space - Free Beta Weekend
« Last post by Deozaan on March 09, 2013, 12:17 AM »
Edge of Space is a dynamic open-world sandbox with exploration, crafting, building, terraforming, survival game. Where you create, mold, and work to survive. Where free updates, multi-player, mod support, and community driven development will help drive the future of the game.

As one of the few, proud, and lucky men and women of ArkCo, you must go where no one has wanted to go or was technically “meant” to go. After an indeterminate time in cryo-sleep, you awake to find yourself in a lonely, Bermuda Triangle-like area in the depths of space. So get ready to explore, scavenge, build, survive, and fight rocket-powered, cybernetically-enhanced laser sharks wanting to feed on you.

They're still developing the game, so to raise awareness and test out their software, they're having a free weekend where anyone can play. Get your beta key here:

http://playedgeofspa...m/free-beta-weekend/

And if you pre-purchase (from any vendor), you'll get a free Steam key if/when the game is greenlit. Which by the way you can help out by voting for it on the Steam Greenlight page.

I dunno. Jolicloud OS has been a free OS for a while. It's essentially a Linux operation system/community. "Going Pay" seems kind of antithetical to that.

But if they do go pay, it's not like you can't access your cloud services individually like you always have up to this point in time.

I believe that the "Two Fingers" is essentially the European version of the gesture you just described.

Ah, I have learned something! I wasn't aware of the cultural/demographic differences in how that sentiment is converted into sign-language.

Yes. You have to be careful if you attempt to display the peace sign; if your hand is facing the wrong way, it would be very insulting.

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for a Host OS?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 06, 2013, 11:03 PM »
I haven't had any problems. However, I'm not much of a gamer, nor do I do much with bleeding edge video cards, so I'm in not at all qualified to say when it comes to that.

Are you running on the metal? Or installed on an existing OS?

I just tried installing ProxMox in a VM so I could test it first. I can't seem to figure out how to configure it without having to connect to it via web browser from another PC. That's lame. I want to use the machine I put it on. Not access it from another PC.

Proxmox VE.

8)

Does this cause any problems with hardware drivers like VMs often do? More specifically, will this interfere with my GPU drivers and/or cause my games to run poorly?

I think it would be awesome to do something like this and run Windows 7, Windows XP, and various Linux distros all simultaneously without needing to necessarily have Windows 7 as the host OS to avoid driver problems.

Beat me to it - worth it for Beat Hazzard Ultra, Night Sky and Solar 2 IMHO - I know others will prefer Dungeon Defenders!
-Carol Haynes (March 06, 2013, 09:34 AM)

I've seen Solar 2 on Steam and it has piqued my interest from time to time, but I could never really tell what it was about or how fun it would be from the video/screenshots. So last night I installed it on my Galaxy Nexus and intended to run it for just a minute or two to check it out real quick before going to bed. The next thing I knew, 45 minutes had passed by and I was still enthralled. It's a good game.

I'd go for a cheaper WiFi adapter. Buy a wireless N card for $16 or $25 or whatever, and then in 5 years or so when you buy an AC router, buy a new Wireless AC card for about the same price. And you'll still be paying less than the $98 it costs now.

And with that extra money, maybe buy another stick of RAM.

As for the PSU--in 2011 when I built my PC, I was under the impression that you really don't need a whole lot of wattage, and that it was better to get a higher efficiency PSU (Gold or Platinum certified) with adequate wattage than a lower efficiency PSU with tons extra wattage.

The case says it supports most ATI/nVidia cards up to 32 cm, which is about 12.6 inches, and the GPU says it is only 8.3" long, so it should fit. The one thing I don't like about your case is that the hard drive bays are facing toward the motherboard. That means you might need to remove your CPU (or at least the fan if you get a big monster fan on your CPU) and RAM and GPU, etc., if you need to add or remove some drives in the future. That's annoying. Take a look at the case that Carol linked for an example of hard drive bays that face... er... outward? which allows you to easily add or remove them only by removing the side panel.

The DVD player is fine, but if you can find one for a similar price with free shipping, I'd go for it. (Actually it looks like it has a free shipping offer that ends tomorrow, so if you order it fast, it's good.)

And yeah, the i7 will cost you about $100 extra, but it will allow you to do some fun things with virtual machines, if you'd like. I used to run a Minecraft server VM entirely on RAM disk. And I could boot up various Linux VMs (or even Windows XP) without affecting system performance in the slightest.

Yeah, I don't get it either. He really liked the Surface, but it had a rare problem of not recognizing the keyboard, so he was going to return it and get a new one. It sucks, but it happens. I've had to return hardware that was DoA or otherwise faulty. That didn't make me decide to never again buy from that manufacturer.

If I have awful customer service, then sure, I might switch vendors. If I have an awful CS experience with NewEgg, I might decide to order from Amazon in the future. Speaking of online purchasing, why not just order his Surface online like a sane person and not have to deal with traveling 30 minutes or an hour to go to a brick & mortar Microsoft store? I understand why it can be nice to support local business by going to your local brick and mortar store, but it's not like you're supporting "local business" anyway when going to a Microsoft store.

Aside: I didn't even know that Microsoft Stores existed. I have no idea how close the nearest one is to where I live.

Tiz bloody warm out there...doesn't happen that often here in the UK, so I felt it was worth a post! :P

Ha! We just had a blizzard warning here. It warned to expect up to 15 inches of snow and gusts of wind up to 45mph. Right now the sun is shining beautifully, but it's about 16 degrees F (about -9C) and there is snow gently falling. Or maybe it's just snowflakes being blown off the roofs of the buildings. I can't quite tell.

Apparently, they aren't as illegal as some would have me believe, and are even required in some states if you have a disability.  See here:
http://www.suicidekn....net/state_laws.html

I have a friend who has a disability and uses crutches to walk. His car has hand controls for the pedals, and the steering wheel includes a knob like that one.

I didn't really understand all of it, but it was an interested read. Thanks!
