I really have to admit that I have felt like a duck out of water so to speak. I really don't know how to fit in here as I am not a coder or a geek nor computer savvy. I learn alot here as I do enjoy learning new things.

Hi there,

It's my impression that the community here is as welcoming to 'learners' as it is to 'teachers' so your learning stuff is helping to fulfil the purpose of the site. For myself, I just wander around, sticking my nose in uninvited and (so far) nobody has asked me to leave.

Enjoy!

Living Room / International fame for DonationCoder?
« Last post by cranioscopical on March 31, 2008, 11:03 PM »
Did anyone read a report in the 'Computer Affairs' section of the U.K. Press where it mentions DonationCoder?  Is it true that mouser is being considered for inclusion in 'a select group of global entrepreneurs and innovators' who will be invited to attend Prince Charles' international web-reach seminar this summer?

Don't forget to mark the envelope  "Private and Confidential" so that it gets through at least the first defensive line of underlings' mail screening.

I'm surprised you don't know this!

In Xara the term Extrude is a short form of Extra Rude.
So, for example, one click on the extrude-tool icon and the program
pops up a requester bearing an insult and then draws a vector image
on your screen representing a vulgar gesture. (What's really
impressive about this is the speed with which it can insult you!)

Create a Skrommel appreciation page here, and encourage everyone who appreciates Skrommel's efforts to subscribe to it in some way?
That way, Skrommel could see just how much appreciation exists.

I've never worked for any ******* as unreasonable and demanding as myself.
But, then again, I've never worked for anyone else.

It's okay, as long as the profits are high.

it was sent off without issue
Sounds as though you're off to a reasonable start.

the final of four screws holding it onto the body of the notebook was seized and the head got chewed up
Arrghhh!  You do like to bring down trouble on your own head, don't you?  :)

OK here's my cunning plan... Sound like a good idea?

I guess we'll know when you report back on your success.
Or will you be able to do that from a laptop with a fixed video but a non-functioning keyboard?  ;)

be honest about the stickers
I suppose you could try "the video worked fine until you attached these Polluxing stickers..."
Probably not the safest course to steer  ;)

Good luck with the venture. Must have been tedious to go through this once but twice is a real drag.

I can't believe they had to kill a cow. They didn't have any tranquilizers?

It was on its way to the knacker's yard anyway... probably the reason for its bad moo'd

Can someone tell me why SP3 is stuck in no man's land? Is Microsoft trying to run out the clock on this OS or what?

They left it to the IE developer group to oversee its distribution?

I'd head back to Staples.

Sometimes their store managers aren't drawn from the deep end of the gene pool but, in the case of in-store reluctance and/or ineptitude, I've usually managed to bully coax someone higher up into a state of compliance. In my dealings with Staples they've been more reasonable than not, sometimes they just need to be shown the light.

Spoiler
And, should it be that DoCo is populated by Staples' managers, may I say what a fine body of people you are!

Hmph!  Not unexpected but depressing despite that.

Could try shooting something directly to their corporate PR people if you can dig out the contact info but I still think that walking away is your best option.  A sign of the times, I fear   >:(

Unfortunately i've tried every program and couldn't find any answer.

I even watched wacom_tablet.dat and couldn't find any modifications to the file.

Tried just asking Wacom?  There's no real reason for them to be coy about asnwering this -- they might just hand you the answer.
Not much to lose by trying...

in all seriousness, do you think if we added the "ignore thread" option to the forum, so people could mark threads as those that shouldnt show up in "unread topics" list, it might help this situation?
Personally, I find that a thread can run for ages and attract no more than an occasional glance (maybe once every 6 visits) and then -- suddenly -- something can appear in it that raises in me a considerable amount of interest.  Say, for example, someone joins in and offers a previously unrepresented perspective.

Is there a need to keep a thread alive and interesting when it's getting long? Why not let it die a respectable death, and let whatever aspects of it remained interesting get fresh life as new threads?
-CWuestefeld

Branching out to new threads sounds good, the tricky bit is deciding when is the right moment  :)

« Last post by cranioscopical on March 25, 2008, 02:10 PM »

Recent material that's appeared, for example here and here has made me wonder about two things.

1) How long is considered to be too long for a thread?

2) What helps to keep a thread alive and interesting?

Or are the answers entirely subjective?

(Watch for my companion thread entitled "How long is a piece of string?")

Seriously though, what do people consider to be common elements that help to create and keep readers' interest?

General Software Discussion / Re: Disabling Acrobat 8 IE integration

Failing all else, could you write a little script to pop up a requester and -- if desired -- run acrobat on the file?   You could then set .pdf's to open with that instead of Acrobat itself.
