Living Room / Re: computer audio: rear + front jacks, different results

About the better sounding audio on your front panel, follow this link that explains the priciple.

Don“t have too much experience with Bluetooth so no help from me there.
Thanks Shades, I think that is precisely the issue at hand.  I'll read that and see if that will be the solution.  i was just thinking earlier that this has to be an pre-amp issue, but I couldn't say anything more beyond that.  I appreciate it.

I just updated the drivers.  but I don't think it's a driver issue.  The sound is working properly.  I'm wondering why the rear jacks have less punch through the headphones than the front jack.

The other thing I'm planning on getting are bluetooth headphones.  These wires at work doesn't work.  I have a wire and extension cord all the way from the back of the pc under my desk on my lap and to my head.  It's not appropriate for work.  It gets caught under my chair and gets in the way of my papers.  It's too much.  My question with bluetooth is that I need to get a separate bluetooth receiver, right?  And how does the sound get to the headphones through the bluetooth?  How do the bluetooth receiver and audio card tie together?

I just wanted to bump this thread again in case anyone had new information or discoveries.

no problem, J-mac!  Talk away!

Kamel, it's not that I don't believe you, it's just that I have to have SOME kind of interface.  I'm all for minimalism, but not nothing-ism!  That's why I've never adopted all that poweruser keyboard-shortcut stuff that the hardcore guys do.

This is a perfect topic for one of those Software Review Shootouts that were once fairly common here at DC. That way a group of video players could be reviewed and all features, all pros and cons could be spelled out clearly giving users good, solid info to help them find a video player that suits their own desires. It's a shame that they are so time consuming to write.
J-Mac, I agree with all of your thoughts here.  Those shootouts are extremely difficult to churn out.  It burns you out very quickly.  I tried to do one with the notetakers and I just couldn't sustain it.  I've tried a variety of ways to contribute good software reviews here apart from the normal forum participation.  But all the ways I tried were nothing I could sustain.  The best solution I came up with, and that i'm very happy with, is asking DC to host my website, and there I have a special section for short reviews ( on the level of the "mini-reviews").  And they aren't complete in any way, and they don't offer much in the way of comparison to alternatives.  But I highlight the features that really stand out, and all of the ones I list are the software that I prefer and use every day.  So it's one of those things where if people trust my opinion, then they have some assurance that the software I'm talking about is a good choice.  I based this model on Zaine's now-defunct Great Software List.  Once I realized and trusted that he knew what he was talking about, whenever I wanted to pick a software, I'd just go to his list and choose the one he recommended and I knew I'd be happy with it.  So that's the best model I've found so far, and it's something I can sustain no matter what my schedule is like.

Not to be off-topic, but you brought it up. And it is my thread, after all!

back on topic.  Regarding this thread, I kind of knew that it would go off-topic eventually.  I tried to be clear in identifying the one particular feature that I was interested in.  But as soon as you say "video player" and "best", it opens the floodgates.  You knew you'd have to fight through all the usual VLC vs. KMPlayer vs. MPC posts.  But it did help me find my answer.  i also think it's a good reference thread to come to sometimes.  Such is the nature of forums.  Still, donationcoder is remarkably  well-behaved compared to any other forum I've ever come across.

LaunchBar Commander / feautre request: refresh toolbars
« Last post by superboyac on February 23, 2010, 08:59 AM »
This is similar to the request made earlier about having the program monitor and update itself as locations where the programs are located are available/unavailable.

Anyway, let's say I'm running LBC and I have the local programs toolbar showing (in the tray).  Now I plug in my USB, and want my portable menu to show up in the tray.  A refresh option would be nice to have it show up.

Both configuration files are open in my preferences.  But if yous start LBC up without the flash drive in, it won't show that menu.

This is good stuff!  How come I haven't seen this yet?

Just FYI, Dopus can do this using their "collections" feature.  There was another discussion about these kinds of features, i think tranglos started it.

But I like this, it's going on my flash drive.

So?  Big deal.

I was kind of thinking along the same lines.  It's obviously a cheap onboard soundcard.  The front jack I've already given up about.  I won't even bother with it.  I'm going to see if I can fix the rear jack.  They install images on these new computers in our company, and one of the IT guys told me they don't always use the exact right images.  So I'll check to see if there are more accurate drivers.

If all else fails, I'll buy a cheap USB soundcard.

Google may be the new Microsoft.  But everything they offer is still free to the consumers, so that's the big difference.  I'm not defending google, I'm just pointing out something.

Living Room / computer audio: rear + front jacks, different results
« Last post by superboyac on February 22, 2010, 05:31 PM »
I just got a new computer at work.  I'm using my headphones and I find that I get very different results on the front and rear jacks.

Front jacks:
--good bass response, better overall sounding.  But really annoying hiss and static.

Rear jack:
--very tinny sound, overall sound seems like it's muffled and weak.  However, there is no static.  So I prefer to use this jack because the static is really annoying.

I don't understand why the rear jack has so much poorer sound.  At first, i though maybe it's because there's one jack for the stereo speakers, and a separate jack for the bass.  But that's not the case; there's only one jack.  But why does the front jack have better sound?

Actually, doing one of the icon maintenance things fixed it.  That or restarting, I'm not certain.  The error began with that American heritage Dictionary icon.  I've noticed this in the past with other really old-school looking icons.  Like, maybe they are programs that haven't been updated since Windows98 days.

LaunchBar Commander / Bug: Icons get switched around
« Last post by superboyac on February 22, 2010, 09:56 AM »
I'm finding another bug with the icons:
I'm bringing in new nodes (program shortcuts) and one of them caused an error (I forgot what it said).  I think the error might have been caused because the icon seemed to be really old school, like from Windows95.  The program was American heritage Dictionary v3.

Anyway, after that, I brought in more nodes.  Like FARR and Direct Folders...but the icons got all jumbled around.  The wrong icons show for the programs.

Thanks Dormouse, now I want to try IDImager and comapre it to ACDSee.  I was one of those disappointed with the new itnerface of ACDsee Pro 3.  My main issue is that it seems to be slower, and they made it more work to switch the modes between browsing/viewing/editing.  Bad move.

« Last post by superboyac on February 21, 2010, 12:18 AM »
Ah!  I have an idea that I like.  I have a list of my software "picks" that I intend to write reviews for.  In order to be eligible for the giveaway, you must vote on which software in the list you would like to see reviewed next.  I don't know how to do the vote, but I like the idea.  Maybe before you get to the screen here at the DC giveaway where you can choose the one you want, you first have to pass through a screen where you have to vote on the software.

Mouser, is this possible?

Here's the list of software I'm planning on reviewing eventually:

General Software Discussion / Re: The best Media manager?
« Last post by superboyac on February 21, 2010, 12:11 AM »
Ah!  Ok.  J. River is nice.  I don't know of any as nice as that AND cross platform.  I'm guessing your best bet would be to try one of the good freeware video players.  Like suggested already, KMPlayer, VLC.  Go through the list and see which one is cross platform.  I started a thread about the video players, you can go through those suggestions and see if you like any:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=20880.0
I know a few of those are cross platform.

I don't know of any.  Like JavaJones said, you're cross-platform requirement really limits what little options there are.  Can you be a little more clear of your requirements?  You said:
I am looking for a media manager application that would let me watch, listen catalog etc. I am not looking for a media catalog, dvd librry kind of thing.
You want to catalog, but you don't want a media catalog?  i don't get it.  Do you want to be able to organize your stuff within the software?  Or do you only want it to play stuff?  This part I don't understand.

Living Room / What's a good giveaway idea?
« Last post by superboyac on February 19, 2010, 03:45 PM »
I'm going to start giving away software licenses through my website.  Since it's hosted by DC here, I wanted to specifically tailor the giveaways for you guys here.  I'm trying to figure out a cool way of doing it, but I'm not coming up with anything.  If I don't think of something, I'll just have them given away through the normal monthly giveaway here.

So what's a nice way to tie in my website's software reviews to the giveaways to DC here?  Any suggestions are welcome.

I've seen where people with sites like mine choose people to give the software through the users who leave comments.  But I don't like that because I don't want a bunch of comments saying, "Hey, I'd like a free license.  How do I get it?"  So I'd like something that would either be fun or beneficial to either the developers or users somehow.  But I can't think of anything.

Sidenote:  I love Roboform2Go (the portable version).  Such a great thing.  All your passwords are with you and you don't have to worry too much about losing your usb drive.  If you do need to keep a few other things secure, you can use Roboform's note capabilities.  But if you actually need secure/encrypted files beyond that, it's going to be a pain in the butt.

I know, I know.  but it goes back to what I was saying about having to customize everything.  I'm just tired of doing it that's all.  It's like I spend 20% of my life trying to get everything to be single spaced.

General Software Discussion / Word 2007: Styles with ridiculous spacing
« Last post by superboyac on February 19, 2010, 11:56 AM »
I don't know about you guys, but one of my biggest annoyances in life (on the computer) is the crazy amount of double spacing and triple spacing that goes on with a lot of html-like styles.  Word 2007 has a bunch of nice styles built in, but they are totally ruined because a lot of them have INSANE amounts of spacing around them.  I mean, Fuck!  It's TOO MUCH!  You put one freaking heading over a paragraph, and all of a sudden, everything is pushed down like 3 inches.  It's out of control.  Who likes this??

I appreciate the option to control the amount of spacing, but why do so many programs assume that people prefer minimum double-spacing or more?  I have the same problem with things on the web.  Like with freaking headers (h1, h2, h3 tags, etc.).  by default, they all have huge amounts of spacing.  I hate it.  I just hate it.  And it's so hard to control.  I have to customize everything.  Create new styles for word, just for me.  Then I have to go in and mess with my wordpress templates for my web stuff.  I'm just tired of it all.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but in my opinion, people prefer single-space most of the time.  So that should be default.  If you want more space, then THOSE people should go and customize.  Not the other way around.

I am so tired of spacing issues.  I can't take it.
