General Software Discussion / Re: Free Photoscape: 5 stars from Snapfiles
« Last post by Curt on May 31, 2010, 04:21 AM »
Photoscape 3.5 is ready.

But notice how Chrome is default:

2010-05-31_111536-755.gif

 :(

There is one minor bug in Photoscape Ver 3.5 It is our first priority to fix it in the next version and here is a temporary solution. Save As: You cannot select your file extension in 'Save As' now. Only saved as original file extension. But if you write the file extension directly in 'File Name', then you can change it. For example, if you want to change test.jpg to test.png, just write ‘test.png’ directly at ‘file name’ and save it.

Hmm... "we are not amused!"

General Software Discussion / AbiWord 2.8.5
« Last post by Curt on May 31, 2010, 03:15 AM »
I never really trusted AbiWord to stay alive. People would keep praising it and I would keep avoiding it. But it has been updated very regularly and is now at version 2.8.5. It really is very agile and competent, I must say.

And free!  :)

Interoperability:
What use is a Word Processor when you can't share your documents with your friends? AbiWord is able to read and write all industry standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages and many more.

Multi Platform:
Enjoy your favorite Word Processor on the operating system you like to use - be it Windows, Linux, QNX, FreeBSD or Solaris. AbiWord has been designed to integrate perfectly with the operating system it runs on. It will take advantage of the functionality provided by the system, such as image loading or printing capabilities.

Internationalization:
Since not everyone in the world speaks the same language, AbiWord comes in many different languages. AbiWord is available in most common and many not-so-common languages.

Make sure your document contains none of those nasty spelling errors by using AbiWord's built-in spelling checker. Dictionaries exist for over 30 languages.

AbiWord supports right-to-left, left-to-right, and mixed-mode text. This means that in addition to supporting European languages, AbiWord supports languages like Hebrew and Arabic as well.

...and much more

MainType... cause I won it here on dc :D

I'm sure there's a thread here on the subject too ... Font managers reviews and opinions

From time to time I have purchased some cheap font managers, only to find they later (or already) were abandoned. I guess one of my prime reasons for buying "cheap" have been the price of the recommended ones. $49 and $59 may be okay prices for MainType 3 and FontExpert 2010, if they were to keep for life. But they are not lifetime licenses, and the upgrade prices are $29 and $39 - making especially FontExpert much too expensive, I think. Changes are not that big, it seems, but major versions come quick (*ALMOST* as often as Ashampoo!)!

Did you stick with your gratis version 2, tomos, or have you paid the $29 fee?

I have seen (and not fully understood) in some programme that listed fonts in a file I created, that Arials 'Postscript name' is actually Helvetica - this was with the Arial font that came with XP (SP2) which is some sort of mongrel TrueType/OpenType

I don't understand much of it either, but Wikipedia says this:

Similar typefaces

Comparison of Helvetica and Arial.

Generic versions of Helvetica have been made by various vendors, including Monotype Imaging (CG Triumvirate), ParaType (Pragmatica), Bitstream (Swiss 721), URW (Nimbus Sans).

Monotype's Arial, designed in 1982, while different from Helvetica in some few details, has identical character widths, and is indistinguishable by most non-specialists. The capital letters C, G, and R, as well as the lowercase letters a, e, r, and t, are useful for quickly distinguishing Arial and Helvetica.[13] Differences include:

    * Helvetica's strokes are typically cut either horizontally or vertically. This is especially visible in the t, r, f, and C. Arial employs slanted stroke cuts.
    * Helvetica's G has a well-defined spur; Arial does not.
    * The tails of the R glyphs and the a glyphs are different.

"Helv", later known as "MS Sans Serif", is a sans-serif typeface that shares many key characteristics to Helvetica, including the horizontally and vertically aligned stroke terminators and more uniformed stroke widths within a glyph.

Hope I didn't come off too harsh with that. Just re-read it and I meant it more as a teasing than an "I told you so" so I hope you didn't take offense. You got the problem fixed & that's all that really matters in the end.
..., today I was changing the settings inside AnVir Task Manager Pro, and the following words that I never read or understood before  suddenly made new sense to me:

Enable Internet traffic monitoring. (May cause errors in network driver tcpip.sys).
-AnVir Task Manager Pro

Glad you got your system working, Curt....if you hadn't doubted my words in post #5 in this thread we would have gotten to the bottom of this problem sooner. :)

Maybe then I wouldn't have learned that AnVir already knew the answer, and maybe I wouldn't have taken the time to figure out why my license key for Online Armor++ was nowhere to be found. But now I know the problem wasn't all that unique, and I finally backed up my license key email from the tall emu. So all in all, everything turned out for the best ;-)

Today my question merely is if I should install Outpost Security Suite 7 now, or if I should wait for "SP 1", so to speak? No, Outpost is not XP or Vista, there will be no SP 1, but ... you know ... will it be stable on my unstable Vista? Hmm... Online Armor++ already is working well...

-my font settings are just like yours. And Yes, I have a family named Helvetica. But the family is so big that the father was named Helvetica-Normal, just to stand out! Though, whether it really is normal, I am not qualified to tell:

-as far as I can(not) understand, any effect of gdipp also has to do with what type of monitor I am using? Mine is a LCD screen from the previous century, named Eizo FlexScan L360, (a TFT type, I am told). Very hype back then, but now just very old.

With Verdana 16 as default it looks like this:

Nor did my first screenshot look anything like Times New Roman.

Found Deals and Discounts / Hotkey Organizer $13.33
« Last post by Curt on May 28, 2010, 03:49 AM »
I cannot remember hotkey combinations, so this program is not really for me, I think. However, the size and the price should make it desirable to some. 282 kb (!!) and $13.33 (normal price $20). I have some other programs from 1-abc.net, and they are all small and 'to-the-point', like this one.

homepage: http://www.1-abc.net/0036/index.htm

purchase: http://www.shareit.com/cart.html?PRODUCT[300386210]=1&cookies=1&noquickbuy=1&COUPON1=edition

0036.jpg

Did you ever think about how much senseless time you waste each day you work on your computer? You start your favourite program by double-clicking on a desktop icon or - even worse - from the program menu, you open your browser and visit the same website again and again or you have to paste the same text with the need to copy it first 10 times per day.

Would it not be much better to execute or paste what you like with a global key combination (also called hotkey or shortkey) which was created by yourself? 1-abc.net Hotkey Organizer was created especially for this need and allows you to define and to save such shortkey projects.

There are many hotkeys available. You can use any character, any figure or one of many other keys from your keyboard. Just combine that one with SHIFT, ALT, CTRL or with the Windows key, with more or with all of them. This means that you can even create hotkeys like 'CTRL+SHIFT+Windows+X' that will never collide with any other shortkey used by other programs or the system itself.

As long as the program is active you can easily press your hotkey on your keyboard and the program executes a command line you entered before (like 'msconfig' for the Windows configuration tool or 'calc' for Windows Calculator), a full path to a file or a program or a website which is opened in your default browser automatically. Or, if you like, the program copies your text to clipboard and pastes it directly.

This program requires only very few system resources and runs nearly unrecognizable in the background. You can create, save and open project files so that your hotkeys do not have to be configured again each time. You can also set a default project path to get your favourite project opened whenever 1-abc.net Hotkey Organizer is opened. And of course the program can be executed with Windows automatically what makes all your own shortkeys available with each system start directly.

Save time by accelerating your Windows work each day with 1-abc.net Hotkey Organizer!

... give gdipp a try soon.
Has anybody here tried it yet?

I installed it as a service, and re-booted, but don't see much difference.
The biggest difference is in details' view in Explorer where the file names' characters now have a thinner line. All in all, this is very little to go for. However, I already have ClearType installed. The combination may diminish the effect?
