Living Room / Re: Wanted: Electronic/Searchable Holy Books
« Last post by app103 on January 11, 2008, 09:24 PM »
I copied tinjaw's original post to another forum where they do a lot of political & religious debating, from all kinds of angles, perspectives, and a broad range of beliefs (and non-beliefs).

It had 2 replies so far:

The thread already discusses the xian ones I have found useful.

I used the http://www.onlinebib...e.net/downloads.html for a long time. Much of it is free, but there are versions of the bible under copyright, those can be bought and unlocked relatively cheap ($5-$12).

Some christians I know swear by http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html , but I found it a bit light.

The UI for e sword is a bit friendlier, but it is capable of less.

As far as other texts, I have not found them united under one program.

There are various Qurans etc, but my experience using them was typically little more than basic searching and reading.
-Vladd44

Another great resource for comparative studies of the multiple versions of the bible is Bible Gateway.

Alternatively, if you want to delve back to the ancient Greek and Hebrew, an excellent resource is HtmlBible.com which contains Strong's Dictionary and Hebrew and Greek Concordance.

While neither of these sources provide software, they are exhaustive and functional nonetheless.
-Knot4Prophet

If you would like to keep an eye on the thread there, I have to warn you first that it's in a free speech forum that most here would probably find offensive beyond belief and it's definitely NSFW. I have asked them to please 'behave' in that thread, but there are no guarantees that they will, or for how long. I will not be responsible if you read or see anything there that you find offensive, especially if you wander around that forum outside that thread.

That being said...

--------------------------

Now my thoughts...

I think the biggest problem for a good application/resource that incorporates all the major texts, religions, and philosophies is that no believer of any particular one will want to present any other point of view in the same way that they would present the one they believe in, and generally aren't willing, capable or knowledgeable enough in what they don't believe in to present it properly, completely, and without bias.

And most scholars seem to concentrate only on one area of specialty.

I think ultimately, to get the kind of software that tinjaw and others want, it would end up being the life's work of many groups of people and scholars.

I think if a serious open source educational project was started now, by those qualified and educated enough in what it will cover & require, maybe we could see a decent application by the time our grandchildren are old enough to understand it enough to get some benefit from it.

This seems like the kind of thing that would probably be best done as a university research project.

I think the closest anybody has ever come to it was The Great Books Foundation and Encyclopaedia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World, which I purchased almost 20 years ago.

It's not just religion though...it's fiction, history, poetry, natural science, mathematics, philosophy, drama, politics, economics, and ethics, too.

If you have about 10 years to devote to reading, research, & discussion, there are a few yahoo groups you might be interested in, related to this book set.

If you would like to know more, this page has quite a bit of info on the whole reading plan, including where you can access many of the books for free (you don't need to spend $1200 to get them all):

Living Room / Re: What should I do with my audio CDs?
« Last post by app103 on January 10, 2008, 06:22 PM »
I have taken stacks of stuff to CD Warehouse. (there is a location in my town)

They will give you cash on the spot for them. They will then re-shrinkwrap them and sell them at a lower price than brand new cd's, in their stores. How much you will get for them depends on the titles and how much they can resell it for.

Most locations will buy CD's, DVD's, games, VHS tapes, and vinyl records.

It's also a great place to buy hard to find stuff that is no longer being distributed by their labels...and get it cheap.

If you are one of those ethical shoppers that refuse to give any of your cash to the RIAA, buying from them will allow you to have what you want without the RIAA getting your money, since they already got their share when it was originally bought new, by the previous owner, and they don't get a penny from the resale of the used items when you buy it.

Living Room / SeeqPod: Playable Search
« Last post by app103 on January 09, 2008, 05:22 AM »
Here is a rather unique approach to audio/video searching...

The SeeqPod search engine allows you to search and then play the results for both audio and video files it finds on the web.

It also has a PodCrawler tab where you can see other results it has found from other searches it has done, scrolling right on your screen. This could be a great way to discover new music you may never have heard of before.

You can add any item to your playlist, save playlists, share them, embed them on your site or blog, etc. (some options require you to sign up for a free account)

What I find interesting, and will probably be the thing to allow it to have a longer life and not be targeted by the **AA's, is that it will not allow you to actually download the files it finds....you can only play them in their player.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Vista Creating Duplicate Files of Everything?
« Last post by app103 on January 09, 2008, 04:21 AM »
doesn't switching off SR delete all of its accumulated rubbish - it does on WinXP.

I am not sure if this is true for XP & Vista, but in the very first Windows OS to have SR (WinME), after turning it off and rebooting, it does clean it out.

And as long as it is turned off, you can even delete the restore folder. If you ever turn it back on again, it will just recreate it and start filling it again when a new restore point is made.

Can anybody confirm if it will allow you to delete that restore folder on XP & Vista?

Sounds like you need a humidifier of some sort in your house. I prefer the evaporative type.

Outside of your house, there isn't that much you can do.

Living Room / DonationCoder's Blog on MillionRSS
« Last post by app103 on January 08, 2008, 06:47 AM »
I added DC to the MillionRSS directory today, in order to see if we can bring our blog some more attention that it rightly deserves.

Now, to raise it's rank in their listings so it ends up higher in search results on their site, we need to vote to 'bump it'. The more bumps a feed has, the higher it will rank in a search.

Every bump is a vote.

If you like our blog, bump us:)

I had suggested that we should do some educational software reviews back in August, although it seems nothing ever became of it.

I would still like to see some added to the site. I think it would be of real value.

I have experienced this IE related problem too, beginning shortly after upgrading to IE 6 on my other machine.

No browser add-ons there, not even flash. Nothing Norton on that machine either.

Same IE problems with this machine, and my daughter's laptop. And I know plenty of other people that have experienced it, some much worse than others.

Upgrading to IE 7 doesn't fix it. If you have a way of downgrading to IE 5.5, it will fix it, but that isn't really a wise thing to do for security reasons.

This is a known IE issue.

[OFF TOPIC]
Darwin, given you are a "Biological anthropologist interested in human variability at the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition"  how do you read tinjaw's anthropology, especially as one who has mutated a metallic lower mandible?  Also, from the structure of the occipital cap and the coronal suture is there a clue as to the time of the metallic mutation?  One thing for sure, the subject did see his dentist twice a year!
[/OFF-TOPIC]

Results are inconclusive, but I'd say that the mutation likely occurred AFTER 1988

I would have to disagree with you there and place the date somewhat earlier, like 1977

Living Room / Re: What do you think about "What I like to do" medallions
« Last post by app103 on January 05, 2008, 06:02 AM »
Speaking of medallion ideas, I think anybody that has ever done a coding snack should have one, as well as NANY & GOE participants. They could link to the appropriate sections for them, like the coding snacks download page, NANY (the particular year) and GOE pages.

Not to mention people that submitted software for other various competitions should have an appropriate medalion.

If we start giving people too many to be displayed under their avatar, you could just show the 5 most recent and the rest on their profile.

And if an Instant Boss one is wanted/needed, here ya go:

This is a known IE issue...and it doesn't just affect IE 7...it was a problem with IE 6 too.

It also affects most IE based browsers such as Maxthon and AOL's various browsers.

On your end of things, there isn't anything you can do to fix IE for users.

On their end, however, there are a couple of solutions they can use that will help them on most sites and not just DC:

1. Use a different browser such as Firefox, Opera, K-Meleon, etc (something not IE based)
2. Use a download manager of some sort. (this is what I opted for)

Sites like AOL opted for another option, being that they are quite aware of the problem and it affects users of their IE based browser and has caused problems with their customers downloading new versions of their software.

They issue a small application that is tiny enough to download fully without problems. This tiny application when run, will download the real software (escaping the IE problem), always the latest version, and install it for the user. Their tiny downloader application is also pausable and can resume a broken download.

I am not sure of the file size threshold for escaping the broken download risk in IE. That would be something you would have to find out and then keep your downloader app's file size under that amount. (if you were to go with this option)

I have never been offended by letters of the alphabet, nor am I offended when they are strung together as words. I find no single word offensive.

What I can be offended by is the messages, concepts, and ideas that can be conveyed with words...the big picture.

I have seen and heard some of the most offensive profane garbage said with 'clean language' and some perfectly acceptable messages with lots of 'profanity'.

I personally think if you are offended by the individual words, you might be putting too much focus on them and possibly missing the message (at least in part) that they are meant to express.

Now about a tagging system...

I have never really liked tagging systems except in gmail where I tag things in a way that makes sense to ME and nobody else. But I am the only one that will see the tags in my email so it doesn't matter what I call everything.

On the other hand, a public tagging system other than some very simple predefined tags that could occasionally be used but don't have to be used is ok, while expecting me to come up with tags to describe the content of my posts will never work.

I will not use a tagging system like that. I hate using tagging systems like that. I have deleted and relabeled the content on my blog a gazillion times, retagging everything way too many times. I have come to the conclusion that I hate tags, except in rare cases.

If I am going to be required to tag every post a make with a bunch of stuff, either someone will be yelling at me all the time for not doing it or I just won't post any more. (or both)

And do we really need one like that? I happen to think the search on this forum is quite good, now...and I would prefer to use that.

If it is for internal use as mouser described, I don't mind. I just don't want to be forced to classify my thoughts beyond thinking about what section of the forum they should be posted in.

Thanks everybody! cats, computers, and cakes...what more could I want for my bday?  :-*

and a glass of whatever you're having
 :beerchug:

That would be tea...in my great big 24oz mug.

On another forum, back when I was a coffee drinker, they added this to the smiley collection, which could be inserted into a message by typing :april april.gif

My cup is still just as big and I can still drink it fast enough to keep up with the animation.  :D

Happy birthday app! How old are you now?
And she's of course 23, like all women are :)
Wasn't 18 really? ;D

I am old enough to know the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

I have my moments where I am only 2....and ones where I am 90.

But generally speaking, I am perpetually 19.

Happy birthday Aunty April  :P

If we're considering implemention of a tagging system, then why is "censorship" relevant any more?

I believe it is relevant due to CodeTRUCKER's sentiment which CWuestefeld quoted, implying that a voluntary tagging system would not be sufficiently effective.

How about this:
Spoiler
Usenet readers used to have the ROT-13 feature, which works much as this here "spoiler" tag. This technique is already available, and perhaps better than NSFW, because the text is physically obscured.

A wise man once told me that you can't be offended unless you choose to be...choose wisely.

That being said...

If we are going to start tagging things as NSFW with some sort of forum mod, I don't want to see the tags. I think a page of posts with a bunch of visible NSFW tags is more offensive that a page of swear words and boobie pics.

Is there going to be something to hide what I find offensive...like the NSFW tags?

Here is a solution:

http://pj.doland.org...nsfw-html-attribute/

and the firefox extension for it: http://www.chrisfink...ddons/nsfw-detector/

Invisible tags and it will become the viewer's responsibility to filter out in their own browser what they don't want to see.

I could live with this.

4098
Lot of good stuff there...even some posts I forgot I made.  ;D

I think somewhere on the sidebar there should be a link to last year's too...just in case you get through all of this years and it still isn't enough.
