General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend disk imaging software?

Well there is also ShadowProtect Desktop Edition, there is also a video tutorial to have an insigt, it looks promising
http://www.storagecr..._protect_desktop.php

didnt tried it myself since I use Acronis True Image

Q:    Why does my system crash with a blue-screen when I run a backup?

A:    The most common reason for blue screens during ShadowProtect backups is the presence of Acronis TrueImage.
 Certain versions of their snapshot driver cause the crashes when our backups are run.  The only work-around is to uninstall TrueImage.

    If, after uninstalling TrueImage, the blue screens still occur, the snapshot driver may have been left behind and will need to be removed manually. Instructions for doing this may be found >here<.
-StorageCraft Support FAQ

I purchased & installed Acronis TrueImage Home, so I tried to uninstall the Acronis Disk Director DEMO that I had been trialling. To my sad surprise it wouldn't uninstall properly but gave me a infinite series of blue screens, until I clicked 'restore'. Now I am stucked with a demo version! However, the above answer from StorageCraft Support makes me wonder if I should first remove Acronis TrueImage? It seems to be known for somehow causing troubles in certain situations!
 :tellme:

Another 'item' is the StorageCraft license. It is per machine. One license, one machine. Meaning that if my (Vista) computer breaks down for good (which really is bad, so why do you call it for good?) I will not be able to move the backup to a new machine because the procedure is that the user first must click "deactivate" inside the program on the machine he is leaving, before he is allowed to activate it on another machine. I don't like such procedures for license activation; they risk activating Murphy's Law and leave the licensed unlicensed!
 :o

I have a license for several file managers, but the one I keep actually using besides Explorer is Q-Dir (the Unicode version). Now at version 4.28

Read: http://www.softwareo...seite=Freeware/Q-Dir
Get: http://www.softwareo....com/?Download=Q-Dir

Steady as a rock, and with this oh so useful "Quadruped-View" window ;-)

a really nice feature is easily missed:
click 'your' flag and get (some of) the text in your language!

@ kalos, for the purpose of supplying evidence, it will be useful if you would paste a link for a certain e-bay page, you want to save.
4032
The Ninite PRO concept is really fine. One will save aeons in the long run because how fast the PRO version is. However, the speed is $20 per month, so being early retired I won't use it. The free version is very interesting, but of course no way near as fast.

Your idea is good, Darwin. At least you 'have a way with words' :-)

Such "de-coupling" must be implemented the right way. As an example of the wrong way, PhotoScape will launch the entire program and THEN offer you to open one of all the minor parts of it. This is a slow 'have not way'...

However, many of my friends are still using OO, and when I point out the weaknesses, they shake their shoulders and talk about MS Office and OO being the only accepted alternatives in the world; they may know about some other alternatives, but their bosses won't let them install any other office program than OO or Microsoft.

4036
I trust that Microsoft some day will stumble and be in danger, because the leadership is conform and whatever. However, I don't imagine they will actually collapse. It is not as if you are in immediate danger of loosing everything if you have more than a quarter of a billion customers...

-the new "FOG" being the $399 expensive Fontographer 5 for Mac or for Windows

http://www.fontlab.c...editor/fontographer/

--------------
I received an email from FontLab:

After more than a decade in limbo, Fontographer, the font editor on which many a budding type designer cut their teeth, has been re-released by Fontlab.

Fontographer was originally introduced in 1990 and quickly became the star of font editors in the brave new world of digital type design. Type luminaries such as Matthew Carter and Sumner Stone used it to create some of the most widely used typefaces today.

I got curious and went to the site to have a look. I even installed a demo, before I had a look at their prices. This was certainly the right order. Prices are high, I think. Really high! However, on second thought: the new owner is FontLAB: I think you can expect Fontographer to be or soon become one of the best in the field. The FontLAB name should guarantee that, I hope. However, I am not in a position to judge between pros and cons, so you may want to go to their download page, and test the restricted demo version.

demo2010-06-22_103935-823.gif

Considering their asking price, I am appalled by the way they try to camouflage where to get HELP other than from their user's forum - so here is an important quote from readme: >> If you can't find your answer on the
forums ( http://forum.fontlab.com/ ) then please submit a support ticket form from http://www.fontlab.com/support/problem/ << [Edit:]. On second thought: This is a demo version; the link to support would most likely be present in the purchased version. Sorry![/edit]

FontLab Takes Over

New Ownership
   Today Fontlab is proud to announce the release of a new version of Fontographer for both Macintosh and Windows platforms. The new versions have been updated specifically to meet the needs of 21st century designers and publishers and are fully compatible with current operating systems and the new OpenType font format.

Meet the New FOG!

But that's not all. Of course we added some new stuff along the way:

* Updated encodings,
* Copy-paste compatibility with new Illustrator and Freehand versions,
* CJKV font support to 20,000+ characters,
* New modern user interface,
* Import/Export of FontLab file format,
* Expanded Unicode and encoding tables,
* Streamlined and modernized Unicode font creation,
* New Glyph searching feature,
* Additional font information handling,
* Accepts most bitmap formats for autotrace,

* Innumerable bug fixes.

Same as the Old FOG?
In order to keep the learning curve short Fontographer retains its essential look and feel. The interface has been updated to modern standards, of course, but users will find that they don't have to learn new ways to do the same things.

« Last post by Curt on June 21, 2010, 11:56 AM »
Women don't care much about if an operating system is "free" or in a "walled garden", but if the system is easy to understand how to use. And this is exactly where Linux is failing BIG time. The very way a Linux works, proves beyond reasonable doubt that it is a system written by male geeks, for male geeks. Nowadays the authors are told Linux must be easier to operate, so some of the Linux software authors try adding userfriendly procedures, but so far only "some" & "try". There are still so many details under the surface where a request for help will result in an answer including geek talk impossible to understand for normal people (man or woman!).

My point is, that Linux never will be a major system until women easily can operate it.
- and this should give people like me a chance as well ;-)

...FastPictureViewer Professional ...., I'm not that happy with it--no PSD support, for example.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional from Axel Rietschin Software is not the average image viewer for your collection of wallpapers. It is a viewer for .RAW photos directly from your camera. The question (as seen from mr Rietschin's point of view) is not if it supports Photoshop but if it supports your camera. And it probably does:

The name of this company is wrong! A weird choice, to say the least. loseyourmind.com are merely displaying two programs on their site, but I feel confident that both applications are meant to help you keep your sanity and NOT lose your mind ;-)

The first one is a font manager. Hmm... "there are already too many font managers, and they all look the same!", was my first reaction. But I installed the thing, to have a second look, and realized this one actually is a little different, AND to the best of my thinking, also BETTER! So much better actually that I already have purchased a license (but of course, if you know me, this won't tell you too much!).

It would be difficult with my limited vocabulary to tell you about this program, in details, so my advice is that if you are in any need of a font manager at all: go test this one! The number of USEFUL features is very heigh. So to speak, this font manager makes me feel that the programmer has written out of need for the features, rather than out of need for an income ;-) The result is so GOOD that neither the homepage or this post can pay credit to the usefulness of the features, because it would take far too many words and pictures, to do so. And for what?: Go test it yourself!!

Several useful features are hidden within this bar:

2010-06-16_162822-796.gif

also this little slide-show is fantastic useful:

x2010-06-16_163027-797.gif

And I still need to tell you the name of this versatile font manager:

Printer's Apprentice

:-*
Wow, that is a name out of the ordinary!

The listed price is $25, but right now it is offered for $15. It is more than worth this price, I think.
-but as it often is with font managers, it will use quite some time to load, though nothing alarming.

5.2MB zip: Printer's Apprentice 8.1 - Font Manager for Windows 7, Vista & XP

Features: http://www.loseyourmind.com/pa80.aspx
Screenshots: http://www.loseyourm...com/pa80screens.aspx

------------
The other application they have is a Virtual Font Folder for XP and Vista. Win 7 was not mentioned.

Virtual Font Folder synchronizes your installed fonts with the contents of another folder or network share.

Virtual Font Folder watches a user specified folder or network share for changes. When one or more TrueType, OpenType or Type 1 files are added to the folder, they will be installed in Windows for use by applications. When font files are removed from this folder, VFF will also uninstall them from Windows.

Multiple PCs can watch the same folder or network share. This is great tool for synchronizing font resources across a network.

Virtual Font Folder is for Windows XP and Vista and costs US$ 15.00 per copy.

The company seems devoted to fonts. To me they also seem to be skilled programmers :-)
So, to keep your mind, I recommend you to loseyourmind...  :Thmbsup:

I have MS Office 2003 Standard, and I skipped Office 2007, so for me it is a no-brainer question: Office 2010 is The Leader and almost awesome! I *HOPE* I can afford to upgrade to the Ultimate version (I have been running the Ultimate Beta for five months, for free), but I am no longer entitled to any academic discount.
