Looking to import some grey-market gellato? :)

cthorpe,

I'm the curious sort so I downloaded the original thinking I might be able to do a better job for you as it looked like something was getting jacked up in the conversion process, but you know what? It's not!

I loaded up the original document in Corel WordPerfect X6 and it looked *exactly* like x16wda's PDF...awkward gaps, words/paragraphs running across page breaks, and all. If she wants to insist on using WordPerfect, that's fine, but I think it's time someone insist she learn how to use it properly.

Words cannot describe how shocked I was when I laid eyes on the original document. The lack of....competence...it reflects badly upon her, you, and your fine organization.

Sorry, Carl.  :(

DC Gamer Club / Re: 86% of Gamers Prefer Free Games With Advertisements

Some free games, like Path of Exile, are free-to-play without any ads. They just rely on micro-transactions to make money. Some are more sketchy about using that model than others, though.

It won't get fixed. More on that at the link.

Oh, if behavior like that persists, it'll get fixed. Just not the way Facebook wants. Businesses and ISPs will just configure their networks to deny all Facebook-owned IP addresses from accessing their networks.

I'm sure there are sysadmins who fight off the temptation of doing it every day. All they need is an excuse.

Would I want to see that happen?

Hmm...a little bit. Yeah.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to repair zip files?
« Last post by Innuendo on April 26, 2014, 10:49 AM »
WinRAR can create RAR files with an internal recovery record that slightly increases the archive size, but lets you to recover the contents of damaged RAR archives when the corrupted or missing segment is no larger than the size of the recovery record.

However, according to the WinRAR help file, "ZIP archive format does not support the recovery record."

This is why I always use RAR instead of zip when archiving my own stuff. I think the latest zip archive format version has offered some rudimentary recovery data to created archives, but it's nothing nearly as robust as how RAR handles things. Oh, and you can control the size of the recovery record RAR adds as well.

Repairing zip files is always a dicey proposition. It rarely works. I think you'd get better odds in Vegas.

Sometimes you can get lucky finding stuff on eBay. A couple years ago my network switch died and I needed a new one. Found a nearly new D-Link DGS-1224T Rev C 24-port managed switch on eBay for the outrageous price of $70 delivered.

Well, I got the impression from the OP that he's looking for a low-to-zero-cost speedboost, but I may be wrong...

Same here...can't spend it if ya ain't got it to spend.

Yeah, the huge selling point of Windows 7 Ultimate was that Microsoft promised all these cool things were going to come out exclusively for Ultimate owners...and nothing ever came. Well, besides a stupid game. It was rather lame.

Something you may want to explore is the fact that Microsoft provides down-grade rights to Windows 7 Pro for those who own Windows 8 Pro.

Read all about it here.

It's a bit of a hassle and it's 7 Pro not 7 Ultimate, but it might be better than sitting around waiting for someone to take you up on your offer and you'd still have your copy of Windows 8 in case you decided to move to it later.

My new phone comes with a customized version of SwiftKey and it's just wonderful. I had bought SwiftKey on a Google sale for either a dime or a quarter a year or two ago. This customized version is even better.

I remember the good ole days of having a 300 MHz Celeron and being able to overclock it to 450 MHz. :D

Unfortunately, those days are gone. If you don't have high quality RAM to go along with a high quality CPU, you're only going to experience headaches when trying to overclock.

It's not worth it and things have gotten to the point that even 3 or 4 year old computers are plenty fast enough to do everything except some demanding games.

I can vouch for this site. I used his site as a reference when I needed to pick up a webcam for a project a couple years ago. He had more information on one web page than every other site that discussed webcams put together.

They are trustworthy & I've used them a time or two myself. Sometimes you just don't have time to go through doing everything manually & a good double-click solution is ideal.

I think I've used different ones a total of four or five times & every time it worked perfectly & worked as described. Insert standard 'make a backup before you make any major changes to your computer' speech here.

Yikes! I didn't hear about this! I haven't downloaded new defs in a while - so I should avoid it?!!

What? Your AV only fully protects you if you have up-to-date signatures.

To comment on the original topic, friends don't let friends use Microsoft Security Essentials. Seriously!

I have seen it let people down time and time again. The only reason it enjoys the popularity it does is because it's free.

Here's a very simple solution.

Stay logged into GMail in one browser, say Firefox...and do all your YouTubing in a different one, say IE. Simple solution.

Ya know, computing in the 80's with everyone's first starter machine just wasn't this hard. "Company sold products. Consumers took their pick of five that they wanted. Then the deal was done".

Are you kidding me? Back then if you needed a patch for your OS or agame...or a device driver you were either on the phone paying Ma Bell out the butt for long-distance charges or you were on an online service like CompuServ paying $6/hour...at 300 baud!

Even then there was no guarantee what you downloaded was going to fix your problem. And if it didn't, you were still out the money.

Google and its evil policy of integrating everything to a single account makes deleting cookies a pain. I have to have gmail open at all times. If I delete the cookie for google.com, gmail logs me out.

Oh, you should never have GMail open at all times. Like you said, Google ties everything to that cookie so when you are logged in they can track way too much of your activity.

I'm currently 'forced' to have two GMail accounts, one for my Android phone and one for my college email account. My solution is to restrict them to my phone & read any mail for those accounts there.

That's the whole point of that "P" in VPN.

Please obey the rules when using our VN. There's no P in it and we'd like to keep it that way.

(Modern take on the old pool joke.)

Well...I thought it was funny. ;)

As a a general rule, if you want to embed an image into the middle of an email rather than having along as an attachment then you have to format the email as HTML.

Using cookies to store data is very 1990s. LocalStorage is where it's at because it's a lot harder for end users to access and delete the contents.

Fortunately, for those who use Firefox there is Self-Destructing Cookies. Per-site settings to never allow cookies, always allow cookies, and allow cookies and nuke them a set amount of time after you have left the site. Clears out that pesky LocalStorage as well.

I've been using it a very long time and it's never let me down.

I love my G700. It's the 'spiritual' successor to the MX with a high DPI suitable for gaming and more buttons than you can shake a stick at.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that a search on the net will yield you a fix for that flaky mouse button if I remember correctly.

Superboyac beat me to it, but I came into this thread to say that hot chicks, whether they be dead, alive, or even fictional, boost the ratings of everything.

No exceptions.

Ever.

And nobody cares about the fat guy that drowned while riding an inner tube during a flash flood.

No exceptions.

Ever.

TrueCrypt is an excellent way to encrypt your goodies & its a portable installation. Just install it to your USB drive & then make the rest of the empty space a TrueCrypt container. For the truly paranoid, you can create a container inside a container for plausible deniability.

It's a tested, proven, open-source solution. Used with a good, strong password no one unauthorized will be looking at your data anytime soon. Just don't ever forget your password or you won't be looking at your data anytime soon, either.  ;)

Uverse TV set-top boxes use wifi? Really? Holy cow...I can see that working when you have one HDTV in the family room that everyone congregates around to watch TV together, but what happens when the DVR kicks in recording two (or more) HD programs at once? While Junior is upstairs also watching an HD channel in his bedroom? I see things falling apart after a certain point...unless AT&T is compressing the heck out of their channels, but that's only going to lead to other compromises in quality.
