General Software Discussion / Re: Needed: Send Shortcut to (select folder here)
« Last post by Nighted on February 26, 2007, 03:28 AM »
I believe you may have misunderstood. I don't want to move files. I want something I can send shortcuts to more than one location than just the desktop. For instance, I use a start menu replacement. It has a special folder that you can put shortcuts in etc. Now if I could send shortcuts to that directory or any other directories of my choice, I'd feel a lot more in control of my computer, not stuck with the arbitrary ways of Windows.

General Software Discussion / Needed: Send Shortcut to (select folder here)
« Last post by Nighted on February 26, 2007, 12:13 AM »
I could use a utility that would let me send a shortcut to anywhere I choose. Being able to add directories to send shortcuts to and choose them from a context menu would be too good to be true but immensely useful. If there's such a thing out there, I certainly can't find it.

Anyone here have any ideas?  :)

Now if it could just restore the windows you had open after an explorer.exe crash....

Nice, I'll be checking this out.

Hey Mogware Support, thanks for this program. It didn't take long to find something to use it for.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Messenger ads serve up malware

Remove the ads then. Use A-Patch or Mess Patch. I prefer A-Patch myself, but you may prefer the other.

My A-Patch settings are attached if you want to import them. It's easily reversed for making changes if you check the backup option.

Here's what my MSN Live looks like after:

If only ACDSee would put back the feature that lets you see thumbnails of every image in a folder and every subdirectory in that folder. This seems to have disappeared. Who knows why, it was one of my favourite features.

FastStone is good, but the author seems to refuse to remove some very annoying glitches in favour of bumping up the version number for very trivial enhancements. For example, when viewing GIFs, the image name doesn't display if you have it set to show in fullscreen. I mentioned that to him a long time ago.

I'm using both actually, because each has unique abilities. It would not take much to make me switch to FastStone though if the author would only add a couple very need features. (at least to a long time ACDSee users point of view) ;)

Not trying to be a smart ass, but how about just opening the email program and using it's native search to do this?

The text file used must have a specific title much like cover art must have a specific title for the proper image file to be used if there are more than one in a directory. I've seen the program a few time, as it's by an author of some other program I use, just never bothered to download it or check it out. If I could just remember what the program was that I originally went to that site for....

Thanks, That's interesting, but not it. (I'll still try it out though ;) )

What I'm referring to is for folders, not files. Put a text file in the folder, hidden or otherwise, and the text is shown when you mouse over that folder.

Someone will get it sooner or later. :)

I haven't tried these. I need something (free preferably) that will let me see PDF files as thumbnails in explorer. Anyone know of something like this?

Somewhere out there in the binary universe, is a freeware utility that lets you put a text file in a folder. When you mouse over that folder, you get an infotip of whatever is written in that text file. I can't remember where it is or what it is called! :(

I'm 99% sure someone here will know. Help me solve this conundrum.

Thanks!  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: CD Ripping
« Last post by Nighted on February 07, 2007, 10:20 AM »
winLAME & Audiograbber are decent enough for what you want probably. You will get errors from time to time in your rips though.

If you want accurate, there is only one choice, Exact Audio Copy. Using this will require some reading on your part as you must ensure that you follow the proper steps setting it up to work properly.

Pencil and paper guy here.

I'd make that case modular as has been mentioned. I'd hit the library and see if they have any book from Taunton Press. They have some of the best workworking books around. I say some very good bookcase plans in those books. Maybe look for Shopnotes too. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find PDF versions of them on the net.

Rent a table saw if you can, you'll be making a lot of similar cuts and for something like that, you want them to be accurate.

2 more, both freeware:

CDVista

Visual CD (found this here in these forums actually)

There are scripts where you just have to put your photos in the same dir (I have one somewhere on my hard drives). The script then auto generates thumbs and html so all you have to do to update your page is add images. This looks cool, but I don't have PHP set up on my server.

General Software Discussion / Hilarious/Sarcastic Software Reviews
« Last post by Nighted on January 30, 2007, 07:07 PM »
I found these 2 reviews over at Reflexive. Both are from the same person, cirruspaxton. I guess they appeal to my particular sense of humour. Anyone have anything else like this?  ;D

  1.) Review of Jewel Match:

Finally, something new!

With all these "been there, done that" games coming out recently, like Gumboy Crazy Adventures, Gish, Zombie Smashers X2, Mexican Motor Mafia, and the like... it's nice to FINALLY see something brand new hit the Reflexive scene.

Matching jewels to clear the screen? How refeshing and new! I can't wait to put this on my Christmas list. It's a long way off, but from the looks of this game so far, it'll be worth the wait.

I'll be buying this ASAP. Developers, listen up: what we need are more games like this! Lining up some jewels, maybe smashing them, and so forth. It's the stuff of legends, and it's never been done before. Get to it!

Edit: Please understand that everything I wrote above was pure sarcasm. Right down to the "been there, done that" games I mentioned. (hahah, as if it wasn't obvious, but the writer came back and added this edit. Hilarious!)

2.) Review of Pirates of the Atlantic:

Sometimes I wonder...

I've seen better games on free flash sites. Really. Do yourself a favor and avoid this game entirely. I've seen games next to the comics in the newspaper with more content and depth. You basically shoot cannonballs at oncoming ships, and buy "upgrades." Oh, don't forget the awesome rank system, which just gives you a rank-up every time you beat a wave of ships and airships. Somehow, it sounds more interesting when I'm writing it than when actually playing it. How in the world can they even think of charging 20 dollars for this? Actually, download this and give it a shot. Spend your trial getting everything that there is out of the game, be ashamed, and then post a review begging people not to buy this game for their children. Getting this as a gift would ruin Christmas. (This brought tears to my eyes! :D)

General Software Discussion / Re: MOVAVI,avoid this company like the plague
« Last post by Nighted on January 29, 2007, 10:49 PM »
I don't mean trash them. Wrong word. But you could use it to share the experience with others. It might whip the company into shape. Look what the "Dell Hell" thing did for Dell customer service.

I think if he just bought the program, he should receive a timely reply and a free upgrade.

I agree also that it's wrong and he's being treated unfairly. Developers should treat those customers like gold that actually PAY for their software, because they work for the people that support them.

I totally agree with what Carol said. Stickies author is great and the program has some indispensable features. I can't wait to get network Stickies running over the web.

Use Stumbleupon to trash them. Sometimes you can find other's experiences of certain sites that way.

If there's something like this already, someone let me know!
