Thanks for pointing this out cthorpe!

there are plenty of such standalone utilities that people use with powerpoint but not powerpoint slides themselves.
you start it up and set it to say "TALK BEGINS in 5 minutes" and it fills up entire screen with large text and counts down.

Very
dangerous in my experience.

  • At '5' most of the canapés have gone
  • at '4' 90% of the wine has gone
  • at '3' all of the beer has gone
  • at '2' even the dregs have gone
  • at '1' the swine who were supposed to listen to you have left
  • at '0'... 0 WTF, might as well go home.

how did you arrive at the 'precise' number of 534 - was it a result of some elaborate doctorate-level calculations? ;D

Could he have been counting down, using the same technique he employs in bug fixing?

[there goes my hope for another update]

Taste buds assaulted

Some English local councils have decided that people who put salt on their fish and chips need to be protected from themselves.

These councils carried out careful (and tax-payer-funded) research to discover that people were using salt shakers with 17 (gasp!) holes in the top. They concluded that fewer holes in the shakers would mean less salt and, in a tour de force of mathematical skill, concluded that only 5 holes would reduce the flow of salt 'by more than 60%'. So, these councils ordered batches of five-hole shakers and distributed them free to local food outlets, again at tax-payers' expense.

Presumably, if this doesn't appease the local bureaucrats they'll order yet more replacement salt shakers with no holes at all.

Thanks for arranging this, tinjaw.

I didn't bother to run a trial of these applications before jumping on board.
I shan't be using mine as any software that installs itself without asking where has no place on my system.
It'll stay 'on the shelf'.
No worries, I have plenty of other unused stuff (shades of Darwin  ;))

I found this in the template auto generated by Dreamweaver:
-Carol Haynes (June 26, 2008, 12:42 PM)

At least you found it and it's fixed!  Good for you!

Pity the background's changed to lime green with puce and orange text though... ;)

had to look up the word catamount

Come now, it's not difficult. I was asked to pay one on the bill from my veterinarian!

I don't own a set of those Bose headphones, but I wish I did!
-zridling

I do and I'm less than thrilled with them.  (Found I could hear a whole lot more noise during plane travel than I had anticipated.)

Apart from one IBM ThinkPad I've installed Windows myself on every Windows-capable machine that I've owned.

Interesting Phill! I'd never seen such thing.
Have you succesfuly solved any java-related problem with it? Does it really work?

FWIW: I have; yes, it does -- or, more accurately, it did for me.

mouser, I think it was just some random hex

Agreed.  I thought it a droll response  :)   Nice one, Phil!

I'm with you, oldfart!
When I were a lad the idea of bringing an action against someone else for a piece of self-inflicted harm would have been risible.

I blame

JOHNNY CASH LYRICS

"A Boy Named Sue"

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Could it possibly be an option instead of a done deal?

Council bans 'brainstorming' and replaces the term with 'thought showers'... for fear of offending epileptics.
... in genteel Tunbridge Wells, the expression brainstorming has been banned. And in future, meetings to generate new ideas will be referred to as 'thought showers'.

Apparently is no consideration is given to the feelings of incontinent intellectuals.

and...
An 81-year-old pensioner was ordered to remove his flat cap in a bar - because it was deemed a security risk.
Harvey Talbot was having a quiet afternoon pint in his regular pub when he was told he had to take off the cap.
Staff said the bemused former driver, who suffers from mobility problems, could use it to hide his face if he committed a crime.
And when the pensioner complained, he was told the Yates' bar was only following police advice.

Imagine the harm this guy could do if he hit someone with his Zimmer!

What's being done in your area to keep you safe from harm?

Women... what can you say?!

"Yes, dear... I'm very sorry."

Just a thought...
You don't have your default action for windows scripting stuff (.wsh, .vbs, .js) set to open notepad instead of launching a script, do you?
Some 'let's-be-safe' tweaks like to do this.

Haven't commented before as I don't know this stuff at all, but here's a non-expert (you can say that again!!) pov.

I like the site.  I think the principal images are well chosen and engage attention.

Have you considered a colour difference between the "body" of the page and the border (that you don't use)?
-Perry Mowbray (June 20, 2008, 07:57 AM)

FWIW,
I second that.  Something about the page was disturbing me and that's it.

Also agree about redoing the banner, I don't think your improvement to the text is enough, Carol.  (Personally, I quite like the different head sizes, though.)

I wholly understand your dismay about having to recreate the file (pity about the flattening, you need something to back up every iteration of that stuff  automatically, eh?) but consider the fact that you'll be using this as a 'reference' for future clients. Every improvement you make both upgrades this site and enhances your sales tools. It has to be worth it in the long run.

(Am I the only one who doesn't like that image of the wall?  It's hard work to make out what it says.)

3970
Thanks for trying, Perry, appreciated!

I guess one should always ask

I know I'm probably preaching to the choir in this thread but...

Following a remark made on this site somewhere, I've occasionally called software vendors, prior to a purchase, to ask if there is a discount or promotion.  Surprisingly many either have something available or will create an on-the-spot discount.

Bean hacked? Not the gadget you want?

...the Jura F90 Coffee maker, with its honest-to-God Jura Internet Connection Kit, can be taken over by a remote attacker, who can cause the coffee to be weaker or stronger; change the amount of water per cup; or cause the machine to require service (call this one a DDoC). 'Best yet, the software allows a remote attacker to gain access to the Windows XP system it is running on at the level of the user.' An Internet-enabled, remote-controlled coffee-machine and XP backdoor — what more could a hacker ask for?

Presumably this is some sort of JavaScript exploit...
