In  GMail, it's is well known about the SPAM recipe links in the spam folder, but what some people may have never seen is the recycling tips in the trash folder.

I spotted this one in my trash folder today:

Are their recycling tips trying to tell us something?

You know you're addicted to DC software when...

You hear popup cody as you are waking up...and haven't been on a pc with it installed in almost 2 months.  :-[

Sorry for the long delay, but a winner will be picked and announced on Friday.

So you have 3 more days to think up captions for this.

I use Netmeter and I love how it logs usage and estimates what your projected total for the month will be (based on how much you have used already and your current downloading speed) .

It does a nice job of logging daily, weekly, monthy totals...alerts for when you get near your limit, alerts if the projected total will go over your limit, so you can slow down and stay under your limit.

It is actually quite easy to go over 50G with normal usage and that many people. All by myself, I can easily come close to that mark with streaming audio & google/youtube vids. (I am glad my ISP doesn't have bandwidth limits.)

It's not too often I make impulse purchases (and definately not books), but I made an exception for this one.

It just might become my coffee table book when I am done reading it...if I can find a spot among the mess there.  ;D

Living Room / Re: Mold your RSI
« Last post by app103 on April 13, 2008, 06:01 PM »
I would definately give that moldable mouse a try, providing the fabric on it didn't resemble that stuff covering the wrist rest on my old mouse pad. (it would have been soft & comfortable for most people but for some reason it damaged my skin)

I like the idea of how it can be reshaped as often as needed, into whatever is currently comfortable for the user.

The only bad thing I can see, is how it will serve as a fantastic 'fuss toy' for people that like to fiddle with things instead of getting work done. It would give them something else to play with all day.  ;D

It's not just Dell...McAfee has a partnership with AOL and some other ISP's to promote their stuff, and in some cases to give it away for free to all their customers.

Living Room / Re: Most useless
« Last post by app103 on April 11, 2008, 08:16 PM »
1) hell yeah!

2) 90% of the gifts I have ever recieved from my stepmother...but the most useless was a small, gold sequined, high heeled shoe about 2-3 inches long...only 1 shoe. (Maybe she thought it went well with the one small sock she gave me a few years earlier, that was supposed to be a coin purse.)

3) A stupid Commodore word processor that hooks up to your TV. It needs a special printer (sold seperately), which I never owned. You can't save any data and it can't do anything other than very simple word processing. (my hubby bought it at a yard sale for $5, back in the mid 90's)

If that doesn't count, there is a list of 'currently useless' items that were once useful, among them this HP printer cartdridge, still in sealed package (I don't own a printer that can use it any more), an older AceCAD Acecat Flair with a broken pen. (the darn cat thought it was a cat toy)

oh...and a :cue cat (why couldn't the cat play with that instead?)

Tiscali was just as bad with their CD's. I have tons of them and they never even offered internet service in my country!

At least AOL used to have service in the UK, when you were seeing their disks. (btw, they are still in business in the US and are the ISP I use for my crappy pc I can't use with the DSL...only service this pc seems to like)

Some towns started holding stores responsible for street cleanup for broken disks after kids made a game of swiping stacks of them from shops and playing 'hit the passing bus' with them, trying to use open windows as targets. If they managed to get it to go through the window into the bus, they won. This left a lot of broken disks on the street. Shops stopped putting them on the counters around here, after that.

FBX isn't just free and working on Vista, now...it's also open source!

There is no longer a support forum at the Hyperionics website - developer says he took it down because of spam. So I can't ask about this there.

You could try their contact page, like the notice on their forum page says.

Living Room / Re: How many people work from home?
« Last post by app103 on April 09, 2008, 10:13 AM »
I have been working from home doing something or other (or multiple things) for the last 20+ years. Some things managed to generate an income (very small, though)...but most things didn't.

I am currently in the process of 'building my empire'. The one that will generate an income while I am asleep. Currently, it isn't making enough to live on, or even support my tea drinking habit, but it's making more than it ever has before, and I consider that moving in the right direction.  :)

My goal is $2000/month (this is a very magical life changing amount for me)
I am currently averaging $25/month

I still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but some day I will get there.

I wonder if all the antivirus false positives are affecting those statistics.  :-\

I am a packrat in every sense of what that word can mean, including being a digital packrat.

My collections have collections. And what I mean by that is that I seem to collect dust collectors the most.

I am one of many in a long line of weird packrats that collect the oddest stuff.

This conversation will explain exactly how bad it is and how far back it goes:

General Software Discussion / Re: GAOTD & Virus
« Last post by app103 on April 08, 2008, 01:26 PM »
There has been at least 1 case where something from GAOTD was bundled with spyware, but that wasn't the fault of GAOTD. They didn't add it themselves, and didn't know about it...and as soon as they were alerted (and it was confirmed), they quickly pulled the file off the site.

There has been some good stuff on that site and some real crap. But that can be said of any download site.

GAOTD has had applications and games that in the past I have paid for and have used for many years and never had a problem with. Some of them are genuine classics, like the game AirXonix (and some other classic AxySoft games).

They also have had ones that I wished I could have afforded or were already on my list of stuff I planned to purchase some day. I was sure happy when they featured those.

It doesn't matter where a file is coming from, whether it comes from GAOTD, Tucows, Softpedia, or Microsoft.com...one should do a little research and know exactly what they are getting, the good & bad. Read the experiences of others, reported bugs & issues. Google is your friend.

Do not rely on the comments posted on GAOTD, only. Do your own homework and you are less likely to ever get burned, no matter what download site you are getting your software from.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Do not foolishly rush in to download & install stuff from any site. Being an educated downloader is one of the best ways to defend yourself. You have to research every application.

General Software Discussion / Getting rid of "Google Goo"
« Last post by app103 on April 06, 2008, 03:26 PM »
Anyone with a Google account may have started experiencing something rather unpleasant recently, when doing searches while logged in.

Google has begun adding extra tracking garbage to links, making it rather difficult to copy a link target from the search page.

A friend of mine wrote a javascript function that removes the "Google Goo", leaving you with a page full of nice, clean, copyable links.

It has been tested with FireFox 2 and 3, K-Meleon, and IE 6. It should work in all other versions of IE after IE6, as well. Also should work in Opera (in theory), but has not been tested.

What you need to do is create a new bookmark with the function as the target (copy & paste it in). When you do a Google search, before you click anything, click the bookmark and it will clean the page.

Copy the function from the page linked below (don't create a bookmark with the page as the target, or it will not work)

UPDATE: His site is down. I think the xbox he was hosting it on died. So here is the code for it:

Code: Javascript [Select]
  1. javascript:{function detect(el){var r=false;if(el.className&&el.onmousedown){var c=el.className.split(' '),m=el.onmousedown,t=false;var s=((m.toSource)?m.toSource():m.toString());for(var i=0;i<c.length;i++)if(c[i]=='l')t=true;r=(t&&(s.indexOf('return rwt(')!=-1||s.indexOf('return clk(')!=-1));}return r;}var a=document.getElementById('search').getElementsByTagName('a');for(var i=0;i<a.length;i++)if(detect(a[i]))a[i].setAttribute('onmousedown','');void(0);};

I have been using Flashget for many years. At one time, it had ads, which were removed if you paid for it. Now it's free with no ads.

What I liked about it was it got the job done without wasting too much precious resources, making it good for use on my old pc. At the time I started using it, there wasn't too many that I could use on that computer. (GoZilla was HORRIBLE!)

Now I think I just keep using it because I am used to it.

Here is one they didn't mention: Outlook can do anything. It is the most amazing and versatile piece of software ever created.

You can do anything with it, from password cracking, to revealing secret identities, names, addresses, phone numbers, credit info, list of prescription medications that person uses, and what that person had for breakfast...of anyone...just by typing in some vague info like "who is Bob?".

It will even show you a map with Bob's location, and you can zoom in and see live video of Bob sitting at his desk.

And if your copy of Outlook doesn't make Atari game sounds, it's likely you don't know what you are doing.

So now you know the secret...if you want to become a Hollywood style expert hacker, you must become a super power user of Microsoft Outlook and know how to activate the Super God Mode with the Atari sounds.

Official Announcements / Re: ZillaRank: An improved search for smf forum
« Last post by app103 on March 31, 2008, 04:31 PM »
I just came across a situation the other day with regards to searching forum profiles. You can search for member names (providing either a full or partial name), but you can't search profiles for content.

It would be nice if in addition to the member search, forum search, site search, if there was a profile search option that would be based on content and not member name.

Currently, for example, if someone mentions a specific term in their profile and I can't remember who that was, I can't find it.

I also can't search for home page URL's to figure out if a particular site belongs to a forum member. I recently ended up on a site that looked so darn familiar and I don't know why. It's not the kind of site I would end up on by accident or follow a link from somewhere else on another site. I believe it may belong to a member of this forum, but I really can't be sure...and not knowing is driving me nuts.

General Software Discussion / Re: WordPress / online WYSIWYG html editor?
« Last post by app103 on March 31, 2008, 03:15 PM »
It's not an online editor, but it is my preferred software for posting to ANY blog, whether it be Wordpress, Blogger, or anything else:

Windows Live Writer

In one mode, it's very plain with a white background and black text.
In another, it's like typing directly onto your blog page. It's blog theme aware. (you can't get more WYSIWYG than this)
And in another, you can edit the raw html.

Has preview so you can see how it will look in the blog before posting it. Lots of plugins available.

It is especially good for inserting images into posts, allowing resizing, effects, watermarking, creating a seperate thumbnail that can link to original, or even a resized image.

Also great for doing some offline blogging and posting later.

This is one of those applications that Microsoft did such a fantastic job on that I am amazed that it's for free.

And it seems that someone has even made it portable.

Serious error. All shortcuts have disappeared. Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

When I was working on my deskbar project, I think I saw that one...right after something I did wiped out all the shortcuts on both of my huge toolbars. (luckily I was smart enough to create a restore point before I started experimenting with things that could/would/did crash Explorer)
