I looked in my AddOns page.  Nothing there for DDG. Must just use that install button to put it in the search engine list. Maybe they figured more people would see it and try it if it was listed as an "AddOn."

Hmm, I was going to give the AddOn another try and I stumbled on this:
https://addons.mozil...on/duck-duck-go-ssl/

It does DuckDuckGo search using SSL

If your vinegar bottle is try pop open a can of Coke Classic and give it a try.  Your keyboard will be clean, but very sticky. :)

Diet Coke?

At least my keyboard wouldn't gain weight. :)
3829
Yes... But Sticky is a loosely related (in a third cousin sort of way) synonym of the antonym of clean.

Nah. I've worked with glues that were very very clean and very very sticky.  :)

For me a paper towel with a bit of alcohol is good enough.  Some on a Q-Tip for the tops of the keys.  And that's only on occasion. Most of the time I just vac.

Which reminds me. They used to make a gizmo that amounted to a flashlight with a small blower on the end. Instead of canned air you could just use that. Too bad the construction was so flimsy.  They seemed to die in a couple of months. But it made me think of a battery-free solution that would last for years.  A junior bellows. Take the thing that hangs by the fireplace and reduce it to about 1/4 size.  Have it rigged out with a spring so you could work it with one hand.  Just squeeze the handles and a jet of air is produced.  Small enough to get in under the old CRT monitor. But nobody would produce them because they would last too long.

Well if Coke won't do it, there's always battery acid
Your keyboard will be clean, but very sticky. :)

Uh... I think Sticky is the opposite of clean...

I think the primary antonym for clean is dirty.
Is everyone a straight man? Just throw the thing on the lawn and let the sprinkler take care of it. :)
3832
Yep, what you said.  Besides, the baking soda only neutralizes the vinegar, which is why you get all the fizzing...
Long time since chemistry class. But I seem to remember a solution is produced with carbonic acid.  The fizz in Coca Cola.  And we all know coke cleans rust, sludge, just about anything. If your vinegar bottle is try pop open a can of Coke Classic and give it a try.  Your keyboard will be clean, but very sticky. :)

I just took it out as experiment.  I put keyword 'du' to search in location bar. I have google as default. If I select a word and right click, it offers to search google.  That must go with whatever is the default engine.  The bang syntax seems to work with the 'du' keyword. I really don't know why I'd carry an extension when I can't figure out what it does. :)

Weird. :)

Anyone using the DuckDuckGo AddOn?  I'm trying it now. Not sure exactly why. I can see adding it to the search engine list. But I'm wondering what the AddOn does for me other than stick a DDG Button on the toolbar?
3835
That worked.  Thanks.

Thanks. I thought I looked in there. Guess I didn't look closely enough. :)

General Software Discussion / Firefox 16 search engine keywords stored where?
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 27, 2012, 01:33 PM »
I'm looking for an easy way to duplicate the search engine settings, including keywords for the location bar.  I can't find where they are stored.  I've looked through the xml files for the search entries themselves. But it doesn't store the keyword there.  I'd rather copy 'em over than keep typing them in every time I change one.

Then I suggest trying some basic AHK_L. It's not rocket science. If you can do a batch file you can do AHK_L and rip your hair out with the rest of us. :)

I just ran tests on the latest Macrium Reflect 5 free and Easus ToDo Backup free on my 2 HP machines.  Just thought I'd post the results in case someone is using similar hardware.  This mainly concerns SIIG USB 3.0 PCI Express card.  The card uses the standard NEC driver. For that reason it may give a clue if USB 3.0 support will work for you.

The test was only using the Linux restore CD made from the image included in both products. I did not try WinPE restore discs. Prior to performing a boot with each disc I brought the systems down and killed the power. You can get a false sense of security if you just shut down as the device can be initialized by the driver since the last boot.

The 2 HP machines I have are HP M9515y Tower and HP AMD 5200+ Tower.  Both have identical SIIG USB 3.0 add on cards.

The M9515y machine has the handicap that it uses a software raid driver that can hide the system HD and optical drive from some boot CDs. This is a royal pita because when you boot the CD all you can see is the 1.44 MB boot image that the BIOS knows about.  Floppy boot compatible crapola iow. In this case, both the Macrium and Easus ToDo detected the drive through the fake raid.

The difference is the SIIG.
The Macrium Linux restore CD did not recognize the USB 3.0 card in either machine.
The Easus ToDo Backup 5.3 recognized the USB 3.0 card on both PCs.

My conclusion.. if you are running an SIIG USB 3.0 PCI Express card and wish to be able to restore at the higher USB 3.0 speeds, the Easus ToDo Backup Free is the choice between these two softwares.  The Macrium Paid version likely has USB 3.0 support but I would do a similar test with the Trial version before buying. I believe the Trial will let you burn a Linux Restore CD.  Of course if you do the WinPE you have the option of including Windows drivers. I tried this route once but it turned out the WinPE did not have native support for my fake raid. So it was a hassle to store a copy of the driver on a USB stick yadda yadda.  I'd rather just use a Linux boot that does the job out of the box.

Some may say so what? Just restore at USB 2.0 speed. Unfortunately it's an all or nothing deal. Either the driver works with the USB 3.0 card or it doesn't. You don't get USB 2.0 out of the USB 3.0 card. You get restore program does not recognize it at all. So then you're stuck doing slow copies to USB 2.0 drives to make sure you can restore in an emergency.

Note this is device specific stuff. I'm not saying one software = good other = bad.  Just thought I'd save some time for the SIIG users in the crowd.  If I'm the only one then at least it's some exercise fighting with the spell checker. :)

I'm not going to sit doing macros that you could do. If you don't want to use ahk then get a user level macro tool that clicks the mouse and presses the keys for you.  There's plenty of free ones out there. Check the big download sites.

Best keyboards ever made in my opinion

I was very tempted to get one of those. Especially back then I was accustomed to working the function keys on the left on my old XT keyboard with the left pinkie. But at that time $89 or thereabouts, was a serious chunk of change for me.

Living Room / Re: What will be your next computer?

I don't really have workbench space to put together a build. But I'm wondering if anyone knows a good technical source  if a particular processor is likely to have fan noise issues? You can't really stress them on the store shelf.  Of all the HP machines I've purchased only 5200+ AMD dual core runs quiet with both cores at 100%. You can hear a hum. But my Phenom I as soon as there's the slightest CPU spike it sounds like there's a tropical storm outside.  There doesn't seem to be any user adjustable thresholds either.  I tried the bit of customizing the performance in device manger. Forget it. If I reduce it from min 100% and max 100% the timings of windows opening and programs launching is totally messed up. Big lags. Totally unusable. Must have only been tested at 100% power.

It's disappointing when the only real knock on the machine is the noise. It's just a big distraction. So my next PC would be quick and quiet as well as reasonably priced. :)

One of the benefits of using a kvma switch(which helps to offset some of the pita aspects) is that purchase of a new tower yields yet another backup mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately the mouse is usually a new fangled shape not as comfortable as the old. The keyboard doesn't have as solid a feel. So I have to hope the ones I'm accustomed to keep on working. I've worn the paint off the left mouse button and can look through the clear plastic. I'd say it's definitely broken in. :)

I use Black & Decker battery vac to clean the keyboard. Occasionally a Q-Tip moistened with alcohol. I'm fastidious as it is. I only have coffee at the desk and wash my hands unless they are clean and dry, before typing.  No ham sandwiches with mustard here. :)

I swear I haven't been drinkin', smokin', or taking pills/capsules/caplets. I have to figure either DEA is burning stuff from the evidence room(and yeah Marcus Welby comes right to your house at 3 AM to make sure you take your free medication) or there's something in the water supply.  But I'm getting like this marketing idea. Might be too late for this Christmas buying season.  But I'm thinking

Keyboard Carwash

At only $19.95 +SH and you can get the 2nd one free for only $150 SH, it's totally powered by water pressure.  You put one of those miracle solvents in a compartment that meters it out.  The water pressure powers a little conveyer belt to move the keyboard at just the right pace. You can imagine the rest, solvent section, then rinse, then hot wax, then onto the blowers.  Guaranteed to improve your typing speed by 10% since psychological studies prove people with crummy looking keyboards use .05% of the brains being embarrassed out them.  Distracting.

On second thought, I think da' DEA be burnin' sumpthin' 'round he-ah fo' sho'!!
I need this here cup of coffee bad.   :)

I prefer to take mine to the local stream where the village women do their laundry. I dip it in the current a few times, then pound it on a rock to extract the excess water.  :)

I'd be a bit careful with that ... might be cow urine in the water.  Urine can be corrosive.

I only use cow urine on Gateway PCs.  Moo.
