I hadn't realised that GCHQ/NSA were apparently so amazingly up to their armpits in deliberately fomenting revolution/war [...]

this is not directly related to the linked presentation (? - it may be implied, but not clearly - although I would have been happier if the images were bigger, i.e. I may have missed something).

And I'm not saying they're not - and you may even have posted before here about it - but if you're going to throw out a statement that bald, it needs/deserves a reference/link.

And how can I re-enable this editor window later again?

Wouldn't it be better to offer this option in Preferences dialogs?

I'm not sure if that's in Preferences - I would presume it's in there somewhere, but I access it either:

  • right-click tray icon > After Capture show > [choices]
    or
  • via the Quick Capture bar which is enabled by default AFAIK (auto-hiding toolbar top of screen)
the button to the left of the Settings (Tooltip: "Select post-capture options & actions")

If your settings seem fine your best bet may be to blow them away entirely (you may want to export them from the main screen first) and set it up from scratch as a new account. In my experience not only is that usually the fastest solution (with any email client, not just K9), but sometimes it's the only thing that works.
-
I tried out imap (EM client) on my desktop for the first time lately - the account was acting funny and this was the advice I got from support. It's working fine now.

FWIW, I run it side by side on my desktop** with Thunderbird which is using pop3. I also use EM/IMAP alone on a second machine. Didnt seem to cause any problems (beyond the initial - solved as Vurbal recommends) but tbh I still mainly use Thunderbird or gmail on the web..

** EDIT/ clarification - I use one or the other, not both simultaneously

They should give you a job wraith!
It's not as intuitive as they think (I did look at a few introductory videos and pages when I started) and the interface (as usual) could do with a bit of work.

Anyways, I'll stick with it for YT, and possibly expand it into other areas of interest. But the fact that google doesnt not allow me to g+ articles unless I use my real name is a big turn-off there. I'm not even looking for workarounds there - it pisses me off enough that I just wont currently expand my use of it. FWIW, I'm considering using my real name i.e. my google account name, but I hate the pressure, I find I stop thinking objectively about it ;-)

Another thing that bugs me is the content of the advertising - they keep suggesting that I follow people like Britney and her ilk :o I thought they had a little intelligence: they know my YT viewing history; I do very occasionally watch a 'popstar' video, but the music I watch is 99.999% either older (rock/pop/reggae/punk etc.), or traditional (Irish etc.), or Bluegrass, or jazz recommended on dc, i.e. *nothing* that is currently mainstream. Maybe they are at a loss what they could to sell me!

But anyways, I really just wanted to talk about the experience, and in general (in spite of my moaning), I've gotta say I'm enjoying it.

I'm using G+ so far more or less as my YouTube account.

Trying to keep it minimal, not "subscribing" to too many people. One guy uploaded about 60 videos in two days, so yesterday I tried to mute his posts - his posts from today are shown twice [edit] in notifications [/edit] (but in fairness, I haven't seen much bugginess apart from that).

A strange thing about G+ is that you can follow anyone - I'm not clear what exactly this means - can they still post stuff yet hide it from certain, or all followers?
That aspect doesnt actually bother me, but there's a streak of being a stalker in 'following' - I follow you: you have no idea who I am, or why I might be following you. You check out my site, maybe I dont make public posts (I do, as it happens).

I nearly prefer the FB approach where you make a request. But either way, my ideal would be that you would have to type a few words when choosing to follow someone. That person might not even read it - but if they choose to, and are interested in what you say, they could then follow up on you (apologies for the sort-of pun), and maybe even follow you.

I can see it being more suited to more wordy posts. Meaning I dont see it as being particularly suited to YT. Mind you I prefer to look at my G+ page than my oversubscribed YT page :-\

But I aint particularly happy with either.

Learning here

I'm curious -- what software did you use Jibz, in the examples above?

Example #2 is ~40% smaller than example #1 - I dont see any loss of quality
That could be very helpful occasionally. Cant imagine myself going to the trouble of reducing the bit depth, but who knows, could be helpful too someday.

I wonder does all that stick - I mean does it really work if they just say you agree to not do a/b/c? A lot of it seems unreasonable, but I guess the real point is whether it's legal.

I almost posted about the email from dropbox the other day:

email from dropbox about changes to TOS:
We want to let you know about some upcoming updates to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These updates will go into effect on March 24, 2014.

You can find more details on our blog, but here’s a quick overview:

We’re adding an arbitration section to our updated Terms of Service. Arbitration is a quick and efficient way to resolve disputes, and it provides an alternative to things like state or federal courts where the process could take months or even years. If you don’t want to agree to arbitration, you can easily opt out via an online form, within 30-days of these Terms becoming effective. This form, and other details, are available on our blog.
We’ve added a section to our Privacy Policy that discusses our recently launched Government Data Request Principles. We’ve also made clarifications to better explain how our services will use your information. For example, we explain that when you give us access to your contacts, we’ll store them so that you – and only you – can do things like share your stuff easily, no matter what device you’re using.
We’ve also updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to better explain and reflect our growing list of features for Dropbox for Business customers.

While we’ve simplified much of the language, our commitment to keeping your stuff safe and secure hasn’t changed. We don’t sell your personal information to third parties. We don’t serve ads based on the stuff you store in our services. As always, your stuff is yours.

If you have any questions about these updates, you can read more on our blog or email us at [email protected].

^ I'm pretty confused there Jibz :-[

  • 1) I dont see any option to change bpp in Screenshot Captor(?)
  • 2) I presume the default in SC is 24bpp?
  • 3) all screenshots say 24bpp in the statusbar, yet you label #3 as 8bpp
  • 4) what are the k numbers - I know k is a thousand ;-) but is it number of pixels? (240k etc)
  • 5) is the idea that the optimisier reduces the image size, but keeps the quality?
Or is it simply to improve quality of lower quality images (#3 =>#4 above)?
I dont see any difference between images #1 & #2...

Living Room / Re: Does anyone here use Bitcoins?
« Last post by tomos on February 25, 2014, 02:47 PM »
From Arizona's link:
When it froze withdrawals earlier this month, the company cited a software bug that allowed people to "use the Bitcoin network to alter transaction details to make it seem like a sending of bitcoins to a bitcoin wallet did not occur when in fact it did occur."

"The problem we have identified is not limited to MtGox, and affects all transactions where Bitcoins are being sent to a third party," Mt. Gox added in a statement on its website.

It will be very interesting to hear exactly what happened - I presume it will come out as some stage.

You were saying...?
and you are saying ... ? :P

if the powers that be really wanted to hurt Bitcoin, right now all they'd need to do is shrug and say "Oh well!" about the theft - and decline to get involved or open an investigation...Looks like Japan has already decided to do exactly that.

Consider: It's private and anonymous by design. There's no transaction trails. No provable ownership of accounts. No direct path of responsibility. No insurance or regulatory requirements in place. No laws broken...so where could the regulators or police possibly step in to assist?

As you say, I dont think there's much that they can do anyway.
I dont see regulation or government backing as a saviour of Bitcoin. I think the governments dont know how to regulate Bitcoin itself - okay, the exchanges could be regulated as you say. Me, I'd like to see it succeeding in spite of no government regulation or backing.

I dont have any Bitcoin -- but if I did -- from what I've read and listened to (e.g. Andreas Antonopolous) I would not be using an exchange anyway - I'd be keeping my Bitcoin offline (I dont even have a clue how to do that but apparently there are ways). But going back to the quote at the top of the post, this might even not be enough.

Hotkeys:
[1] request the ability to crop via shortcut -
this is usually all I do in SC, so would be great if I could just select my area and e.g. Ctrl+Enter to crop (or even just Enter?)

currently 'Ctrl+R' does what you want. is this request meant to add another hotkey for the image crop?

oups...
I better read through the menus to see what else I'm missing out on :-\

« Last post by tomos on February 25, 2014, 04:58 AM »
hi mouser,
I had a couple of minor requests, so thought I'd throw them in together.

Hotkeys:
[1] request the ability to crop via shortcut -
this is usually all I do in SC, so would be great if I could just select my area and e.g. Ctrl+Enter to crop (or even just Enter?)

[edit] this exists :-[ Ctrl+R (thanks lanux128)[/edit]

[2] I've been using SC for years now, but I still struggle with the Ctrl+Q shortcut to delete a file:
Ctrl+Q is used by many apps to close the programme (I think it's origin is in graphics programmes, maybe from the mac world?).
(But I can understand reluctance to change a long standing shortcut - is customisation of menu shortcuts outside the realms of possibility?)

Pixelation error:
[3] [Very minor] confusion re pixelation:
a long time ago I got into using huge blocks for pixelation:

Screenshot - 2014-02-25 , 11_35_18.png

I had forgotten this, and lately got this error when trying to pixelate a line of text (which wasn't high enough to cover one "pixel"):
---------------------------
Screenshot Captor
---------------------------
Floating point division by zero.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
took me a while to figure out what the problem was - would it be possible to make the error message more informative?
Or are my pixelation setting completely off? (Default is 5/50 for min/max)

btw here how that image above pixelates

Hi LiDale,
I think png is the default filetype - this is the best quality for screenshots anyway. Avoid jpg completely here (files are smaller but quality is worse).

You mention PDF - are you using PDF anyway? - or are you asking if it's better quality than the others? If the latter, again, I'd say just stick with the png filetype.

Here's my settings -

Screenshot - 2014-02-24 , 21_00_37_ver001.png

The dpi and colour are default - no need to change them (dpi may vary according to your monitor).

It's worth going through the all options to see what is possible.

Here it's set to no popup and play capture sound - so I'm sure it worked - mind you, I've never had any trouble with it not working ;-)
3821
It's an interesting idea - especially for photos (for me anyways).

The interface might just scare me off (video), it seems to me to be so fundamentally geeky and unintuitive. I can say that - but unfortunately I dont have any talent in the direction of offering/suggesting alternatives... [edit] fundamental GUI alternatives I mean [/edit]

Did you get Dopus that time Contro (I know you gave it a trial), or are you using Windows Explorer?
(I ask cause, AFAIK, it's easy to add to Dopus context menu)

Is there any program that controls even the Kernel?

^Yeah, I think the thread moved away from the clipboard fairly quickly :D

Read the Manfred Kuehn link from dr_andus - that was very informative I found - and helpful in it's suggestions as to *how* to take notes. He's not so into the idea of simply copying quotes - more into your opinion of, and comments on, the quotes.

The basic strength of any IM is that each note is separate and can be moved around/"cloned"/copied/connected/tagged/filtered.
So when you say:

one long text file of heterogenous snippets is not a problem.  Don't bother parsing out into various categories and topics.  Keep all notes in one single shoebox (=folder).  The Grand Indexer, regularly run, and the Info/Data Manager would be the way to go.

makes me think: would it not be better to have each "snippet" as a separate note? Mouser's CHS uses a database for clips. I've never really taken advantage of that in any menaingful way, but it might be worth looking at it's capabilities and export options.
OTOH, InfoQube -- and probably many other IM's -- allow the option to separate a pasted text into individual 'items' (with a new item after each carriage-return). Also importing a text file in a similar manner is oten a possibility.

Re the indexing of your PDF's -- I think there are IM's that will allow search of linked files (maybe they're indexed?), or even store a copy within it's own db (that is gonna be dangerously big though imo). But not an option I need/use so I'm not well informed there.

But just index/search is not enough, hence the Info Manager. And I think that's where/what you've got to follow up on.
