LaunchBar Commander / Re: Unable to move bar
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2017, 08:08 AM »
In LBC, you can't drag a bar off the side of the screen once it is docked (though you can drag to resize it).

The way you change which side of the screen it's docked to is to right-click on the bar and choose the menu item "Toggle docking".  That will undock the bar from the side of the screen so that you can move it to another side of the screen.

Let me know if that helps.

Living Room / Re: how to learn finance
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2017, 05:18 PM »
Fantastic post, Iain -- thanks for sharing that.

I have been reading investing books for a while now and they all unanimously agree that indexes are the way to go -- hold most of the market and don't try to guess the winners.  This advice seems to have been given by the best investors for almost a century.
Most of the argument has rested on the difficulty of picking winners, and as mentioned above, the difficulty of active fund managers performing sufficiently better to offset their higher fees.

It's nice to see an additional explanation for why it's so hard for active fund managers to beat indices -- the fact that most of the gains are due to a very small number of (hard to predict) stocks that do well in any given year.  This argument is similar to the arguments about why timing the market is so hard -- that most of the big gains happen in VERY VERY short windows of stock price jumps, so that if you try to get out when prices are falling and get in as they are rising, it's already too late and you've missed the significant rises...

Screenshot Captor / Re: Blank white screen when capturing a browser window
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2017, 05:07 PM »
As Tomos says, it could definitely be a security antivirus program (or possibly a FF security addon or new FF feature) doing one of those irresponsible tricks where it thinks it is helping you and deciding you don't need to be told what it's doing.  In which case you will just need to go find the setting for it that whitelists Screenshot captor.  That would be my guess if snipping tool works.

However, if the FULL SCREEN capture from SC works, and just not active window capture -- then the problem is probably with SC's attempt to grab active window transparency.  And disabling that would fix it -- as would setting a longer delay between transparency flashes.  Let me know if the problem is only with Active Window capture in SC and I can provide more details (essentially just uncheck the "Try to capture Aero Glass transparency" option on the Window Capturing 1 tab).

Screenshot Captor / Re: Making screenshot of Screenshot Captor menu
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2017, 10:19 AM »
Good point -- this gets back to what Abterix was saying.  Don't try to use that special function, just disable the "hide before capture" option and then you can capture SC screenshots just like any other app.

Living Room / Re: Movies you've seen lately

We watched the following two anime movies this weekend:

Kimi no Na wa (aka "Your Name"):

Paprika:

Both really excellent.  The first very sweet and beautiful but with some clever stuff.  The second much more "experimental" but amazingly animated and inventive.

Hi Blanc.

That is the right direction.. The problem can be that flash swf video can be compressed and sent in a way that makes URL Snooper not helpful.. :(

Screenshot Captor / Re: Making screenshot of Screenshot Captor menu
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2017, 08:09 AM »
Maybe I was over-thinking things, assuming that the SC menu was closing due to a keypress.  If not then yeah what Abterix says is true, you can just use SC to capture images of itself including a dropped-down menu, as long as you don't have SC configure to hide itself before capture.  That option can be found in the "Capture Options" tab, about half way down under "Before Capture".

Screenshot Captor / Re: Making screenshot of Screenshot Captor menu

You could do it with a delayed capture, but that is a bit annoying to do currently because you have to first set a delay for all captures, then capture, then turn off delay.
I will be adding a one-time delayed screenshot hotkey in next release to make it easier.

I cant think of why windows 10 wouldnt offer you that option.. Are you sure it's seeing the right monitor (and not the built-in one) when it gives you those choices?

Hi james!

Your screenshot shows you put in the license key correctly -- you are all set and the same permanent non-expiring license key will be recognized if you install any of our other programs.

Regarding it showing "0.00" in credits -- go find the email you received with your license key after you donated.  In that email is a link to visit that will upgrade your forum account to show you are a supporting member and you will see your credits then.

And please do post any suggestions or feature requests you might have, I'd love to hear them.

Regarding this:
I'm still disappointed the software has still not updated it to append screenshots as you take them to form one mural as I thought was promised

You can drag and drop screenshots from the thumbnail onto the current image and you will see an option for combing them side by side with the current image -- it's a very easy way to combine images.

If you want an easy free way to make a full grid of images, download this free program called ImageGrid by another very talented member of our forum, vlastimil:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=29464

Or if you need to make fancier murals there are other programs that you might inquire about on a separate thread.

Related question: Is it possible to run PT with a parameter that tells it the filename of the .ini file to use, or is the filename ProcessTamer.ini fixed as the default?

I could certainly add that function.

You can hit Ctrl+P to directly bring up the right-click shell context menu.
If you are on an item, it will trigger for the current item, but if you are in the search edit area, it will trigger for the first item.

(From there you can use cursor keys and enter to select an item in the shell context menu).

Note: Ctrl+R does a similar thing but shows the preliminary right-click menu.

I was thinking it might be nice to try to organize people on DC who might be willing to commit to spending a few dollars each year (or every 6 months) to help fund a coder.

Obviously we cannot provide real money the way big companies do, but maybe if we work together we could raise enough for a $1,000/year fund, and then pick one different freeware/opensource coder per year to give the money to in order to help them be able to devote more of their time to coding and learning.

It's a small amount of "grant/award money" but just being selected for it might also be somewhat useful to students who are looking for accomplishments to put on a resume, etc...

I'm thinking there would be no obligations from the recipient -- but it's also possible that the award would go towards a particular proposed project and we would want the recipient to post occasional brief public progress updates on the project.  I guess it would depend on the basis for which we would select recipients, which I have no idea.

Just an idea.. Thoughts?

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows moving around after monitors wake up
« Last post by mouser on April 06, 2017, 03:03 PM »
I'm being driven crazy by this behavior -- I've posted a request for someone to code an app to handle this here:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=43694
3791
This thread describes a problem that quite a few people seem to be suffering from, where window positions get scrambled on multi-monitor setups when the monitors wake up from sleep:
https://www.donation....msg407109#msg407109

It doesn't happen and I think it's some side effect of some monitors not waking up fast enough.

The app will have to do the following:
1. Periodically store the positions of all windows on screen.
2. Detect when the monitors wake up from sleep.
3. After some delay after waking up, automatically restore the window positions (including maximization state, etc.)
4. I'm guessing it will need some way of allowing user to exclude certain apps from processing (i'm guessing some apps might misbehave or have hidden windows that shouldn't be processed, etc.)

One of the hardest aspects of coding these days is finding ideas that haven't been implemented already

ProcessTamer / Re: Processtamer isn't raising priority of some programs
« Last post by mouser on April 02, 2017, 10:10 AM »
Let me look into that then -- Process Tamer absolutely SHOULD detect when programs start and apply the rule automatically, so if it's not doing so then it's a bug.

My apps should all still use it if it's installed, but I have definitely stopped "promoting" it, as I essentially gave all my apps the ability to CHECK for updates using code built into them (DcUpdater will download and run the installler).

So anyway, DcUpdater is not really needed anymore, and it does seem a bit overkill.
