General Software Discussion / Re: SmartFTP Users: Adware As Of v.2.5.1004.7
« Last post by Nighted on March 05, 2007, 04:53 PM »
I have no clue what happened. I scanned every drive and found nothing, absolutely zilch. That with fully updated databases for both my virus scanner and malware apps.

My system couldn't be any cleaner. Now it seems most likely it loaded through IE, as IE has always been how I've become infected with malware in the past. I very rarely use it, and the moments my AV was disabled were probably enough to let something get by.

General Software Discussion / Re: Need app to find album cover art?
« Last post by Nighted on March 04, 2007, 04:10 PM »
I was going to mention Album Cover Art Downloader too....

CD Art Display is like a cd case that displays the cover and song info, etc...you can set it to automatically download covers for you as you play songs. You will probably be better off using the latest beta...it's in the forum.

I believe doPDF does what Fineprint does, and it's freeware to boot.

I'd stay away from PCI-e, considering you have an AGP slot.  ;D

h3h...no AV let this happen. My other machine died, second MSI motherboard dead in a year. (Will never buy anything from MSI again.) I'm on my backup Celeron 850 machine now and turned my virus scanner off last night so I could free up some resources for other things. So, my bad. :tellme:

I'll have it fixed up as good as new in a few hours.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to edit .xpi, and with what?
« Last post by Nighted on March 03, 2007, 09:18 PM »
Curt, you can also just use the MR Tech Local Install extension. It can change the compatibility of the extension for you.

Basically if you want to edit it yourself you change xpi to zip, make the changes with any text editor, zip again and change back to xpi. Always works for me. If it's not working, maybe something is compressing it with a non-standard zip routine.

I put the keyfile there to make it portable in conjunction with an autoit script.

Never downloaded anything from that site. However, I did upgrade Messenger Plus! last night and that may have something to do with it although I didn't select the ad sponsored option.

dk70, I think you may be right...I'm going to have to look into this immediately.

I may have stupidly jumped to a conclusion here. I tried the installer sandboxed to see if the files would appear again but no luck. It's just that it coincided with the install of the new SmartFTP revision.  :-[

Here's the MD5 hash of the installer I downloaded in case anyone wants to compare: D2D9547FE2C0A4DD7866EEC6DB10AB1D

dk70, I'm not infected. I blocked the registry entry that was to be run on the next reboot and I deleted the file.

f0dder, yeah it's a 3D Color Changer scheme. The script is attached.

Can't create a checksum, I deleted the file immediately after blocking the entry from entering my registry and taking the screenshot.

I used to really love Pagemaker. It was really cool for making forms or tables that I wanted to print out. It disappeared when Windows 95 came along. :(

I think it's the pagemaker that Adobe bought, but Adobe's pagemaker seems nothing like the program I remember.

Downloaded this from Filehippo today. It tried to add a runonce to my registry concerning this file: NSIS.Library.RegTool.v2.{C480568F-0B79-433A-8399-52D704BACE84}.exe.

Searching shows that this is verified 100% adware. The company that produces this garbage is here: nsismedia.net

One detailed report here.

It was confusing at first as NSIS to me always means Nullsoft Install System, but my spidey sense told me something else entirely. ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista: Download Disaster?
« Last post by Nighted on March 03, 2007, 04:57 PM »
Here's what happened to the author of Folder Size:
What is the deal with Vista?

I installed Folder Size in Vista, it installs fine, but Explorer doesn't show the Folder Size column to be available. So I go to another machine to install Vista and set up a development environment so I can find out why Folder Size doesn't work. This machine already has XP and Ubuntu on it, and some unpartitioned space, so I tell the Vista installer to install to the empty space. It copies some files and then reboots, as expected. But instead of resuming the Vista installation, it resumes XP from hibernation! So I shut down XP, and it boots XP again. So Vista overwrote my Grub boot menu, and boots the wrong partition! I kind of expected it to overwrite the boot menu, and I figured I would restore it later. But I was surprised that it couldn't figure out what partition to load.

And here's the best part - XP didn't actually load the second time. It loads for about 5 seconds, a Blue Screen of Death appears for about 0.1 seconds, and then the machine reboots. Even when it tries to load in Safe Mode.

So the Vista installation upgraded my computer from a dual booting XP/Ubuntu system, to a completely non-functional system.

Vista sucks!

Probably not exactly what you're looking for but you can set it up to run programs from the context menu. Go with the submenu pack.

Try updating your graphics drivers first...you may luck out and get updated support for widescreen, otherwise you can get a card for around 50 bucks that would do the trick.

You'd think after over half a decade in development, Vista would be garnering more praise. I was very excited about XP. I feel nothing but dread concerning Vista, especially considering the bad experiences that I am reading about almost every day. It's basically a new beta operating system forced on every "tester" that would buy a new computer. You think more efficient would be better, not more resource intensive and bug ridden. It's simply inexcusable for a company with the resources of Microsoft to expect consumers to accept this. The problem is that people will let them get away with it and there is no popular alternative at the moment.

* Nighted is neither impressed, or surprised.

General Software Discussion / Re: Any app to auto-replace Notepad ??
« Last post by Nighted on February 28, 2007, 04:10 PM »
You do know that you can just change the association of the text file to open in any other program, right? You don't have to actually replace notepad.exe. You must know that though. I also replace the default notepad with notepad2, but I permanently disable file protection before installing XP using nLite.

XPLite lets you turn off file protection although I've never used it. I think WinXP Manager lets you do it also.

No one mentioned FileMenu Tools, which I found in the excellent Donationcoder Newsletter. Whoever originally found that, wow, you're awesome! ;)

Oh, if anyone wants the context menu thumbnail thingie, it's here.

Yeah, MPC really kicks ass, no other words can emphasize it more. It's amazing how much they packed into that player.  Hopefully you'll use it to watch videos too because it really is it's best feature! ;)

Carol, I think you are referring to the feature that let's you run multiple instances of messenger. The only client I know of that can do what you want is Trillian.

Nod5, you can also do this with Media Player Classic. However, it doesn't give you the precise control over which frames are grabbed, but it's very easy and fast. I hear VideoCharge Pro does contact sheets too but I haven't had time to try it out.
