General Software Discussion / Re: Why the aversion to .NET Frameworks?
« Last post by Eóin on November 18, 2010, 08:57 AM »
The one thing from C++ I miss in C# is deterministic object destruction - RAII is great.

Of course there is always C++/CLI. Managed C++ was an ugly kludge but C++/CLI seems really elegant, and considering MS has C++ God :D Herb Sutter at the helm, it would seem that they take supporting and developing it very serious.

That said the Compact Framework doesn't support it, so no Windows Phone 7 programming :(

Not sure about friends, but I the conversation seems to be more intelligent when it's with myself.

Truth is, C (and asm) simply can't be beat for systems level programming where size and speed (i.e. performance) really matter.

Thanks to templates, C++ offers the compiler much more opportunities for generating optimized code than pure C. And much as I love Asm, it really has no place in systems programming, and in high performance computing the professional world uses Fortran.

because they don't know everything about everything and someone takes advantage of a gap in their knowledge.

But the gap in this case wasn't really IT related, it was a gap in basic common sense. That can be funny, and it was here.

Should I laugh at the holes in your knowledge? It's funny, right?

To be honest, yes it usually is quite funny. If you're the type who will laugh at someone else messing up, then you have to be able to handle getting laughed at yourself.

For example you say everyone has a moment of weakness in which we're not thinking clearly, well yes that is absolutely true, but it's still funny. Now laughing at someone who is looking for help is a slightly different matter, nonetheless if someone asks a particularly stupid question then that too is very funny.

In the end of the day, I've laughed and been laughed at, and I think my life has been better and happier as a result.

But that was the Windows mobile version Deozaan, which indeed has been available OEM on a number of HTC phones. For example, it was on the US HD2 phone, but not my EU version :(

It's the Android version which is still in beta.

Of course anyone can, and most of us at some point in our lives probably have fallen for a scam, maybe not even that good of a one. But, I do think everyone is entitled to laugh when we see someone displaying such an extreme degree of stupidity and cluelessness.

There was a beta available on the Marketplace a long time ago, but since they've "released" the full version they've decided their business model is akin to OEM

Swype is still is closed beta, it's not finished last I checked. I hope when it is finished it'll be available to buy and install it. Of course if not there'll always be a hacked version for download, and in spite of other my dislike of pirating software, I for one wouldn't feel guilty if no other source were available.

Folks feel free to disagree with on this, I fact I welcome having my opinions reversed - but sometimes I find it hard to understand why something like this is illegal. It's morally wrong absolutely! But is it so different from what companies do a lot of the time?

[edit] Just to add, I do tend to believe that things which are unambiguously morally wrong (I don't include religious morality in that list) probably should be illegal. I just don't understand how our capitalist societies separate scams from business?

Android phones are really tightly integrated with Google and Google's services, which is good if you use them,  but some may not appreciate as much.

I'm not a fan of Google's big-brother world, so I don't really like it. It is damn handy though :-[

Unless you like assisted suicide ... or tricking friends into doing it and watching them freak out and panic as they try every method available to survive... only to fail :P

How do you get monsters (mobs) in multiplayer? Do you have to run a custom server or something?

I recently installed Android on my HTC HD2, which was a WinMob 6.5 phone, but the excellent hackers over at xda-developers have managed a near feature complete port. I've been so impressed with Android that I use it as my daily OS. Certainly when I get my next phone it'll be native Android from the start. The build I'm running is based on CyanogenMod like Deozaan.

You'll be getting yourself a Desire HD at the right time too, it's just be permrooted so you can now install custom firmware.

My hostility towards Apple is primarily due to fanboys, lies from Apple, their demonically evil licensing changes, and the general douchiness they exude.

I not so sure amount the money motivation. Bad and all as the financial sector are, actuaries perhaps more than any of the rest rely on being right. So if it is the actuarial sector lobbying for these changes it's because the link is very real.

An insurance company doesn't make money by reducing risk factors which weren't actually a factor.

The gaming industry could suffer hard if California wins this one, and the public of any age would as well. If California wins, it would place a whole bunch of games in the same category as pornography, which could effectively remove them from most store shelves, making them unavailable to anyone of any age, not just children. And if that were to occur, it is most definitely government sanctioned censorship.

I agree it could happen, and cost the industry financially. However that wouldn't make it government sanctioned, just an unfortunate consequence which any individual retailer would be free to buck the trend on.

On the matter at hand; If we believe that violent films can corrupt the minds of youths, such that we need to protect them through censorship, then not extending that censorship to games and other media would be stupidity of the highest order.

Now personally, I'm not so convinced that exposer to violence automatically leads to acting violence, but clearly the lawmakers, politicians and media do believe in that link. And since those are the folks that get to make these decisions, the logic of extending censorship is perfectly legitimate, again if you accept the link as real.

I've recently been told that Windows runs better on a Mac than on a PC by a fanboi.

I have to admit it is pretty innovative for a tech company to have so successfully applied religion-esque brainwashing to it's customers.

I more or less moved away from TheBat! recently too. I did try Thunderbird and was impressed by how far its come, but in the end I settled on Windows Live Mail.

In spite of it's monstrous RAM usage, I quite like it.

When doing a commit through TortoiseGit, it lists the changed files and double clicking on one shows a diff. So I usually check the diffs only if I spot something out of place in the file list.

Windows Mobile smartphones had the option to display contact details upon turning on the phone before you'd have to unlock it, that was also pretty useful. Wonder if Win Phone 7 has the option?

I really thought that just wouldn't work, should have educated myself first I guess :-[

Trying to run an XP install under different hardware (i.e. a VM) than it was setup on is asking for trouble, if not impossible.

Honestly, I've dual booted windows for years and never had any trouble, thought I also never cared if the windows drive was a different letter from 'C'. It simply doesn't matter what the drive letter is apart from aesthetics.

I don't know, you could just try going for it, install Win7 and see if it labels it's own partition as C. Doing so should have no ill affects on the XP OS. All you'll lose is time ;)

Idealy you want to somehow hide the XP partition while installing Win7 so it doesn't try and be "intelligent" by selecting another letter.
